Tradel, Georg].
Augsburg, Valentin Schönig, 1587. 4°. Mit Holzschn.-Titelvignette. 104 nn. Bll., Mod. Ppbd. - Bl. A ij mit kl. Gonzalez de Mendoza, Juan:
Madrid: En casa de Pedro Madrigal, 1586 [but dated 1587 on the colophon page]. Two parts bound in one volume. [12],116; 244,[12] leaves, including one full-page plate. Small octavo. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down, gilt red morocco label. Binding edgeworn and rubbed, foredge of front board gnawed. Trimmed close, affecting the first word of the title and the running headline in the preliminary material. Ex- lib., with a small ink stamp on the verso of the titlepage and on the colophon page. Faint old stain in upper margin of second part, else quite clean internally. About very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An early edition of Gonzalez de Mendoza, following the first of 1585, and the second and best edition to contain the Espejo narrative of early exploration in the American Southwest. Antonio de Espejo began his exploration of New Mexico in 1583, in the company of Fray Beltran and fourteen soldiers. The ostensible reason for his expedition was to find Fr. Agustin Rodriguez, who had disappeared in that region the previous year, but much more was accomplished than merely establishing the sad fate of the martyred Franciscan. A true wealth of new information about the traversed territory was garnered, and this is the first publication to include notice of that expedition (found in this edition beginning on leaf 165 of the second part). Most editions of this work do not contain the information about Espejo's New Mexican adventure, and Wagner says that the present edition is only the second with the Espejo narrative, following a Madrid e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ore Novelment Imprimee & Corigee, Ouesque References al Abridgement de les Cases in Brooke Addes in le Margent de Chescun Case. London: In Aedibus Richardi Tottelli, [1587]. [v], 108, 108-142, [1] ff. Folio (11-1/2" x 8"). Contemporary calf, blind rules and medium-sized arabesques to boards, raised bands and later lettering piece to spine. Underlining and brief annotations in fine contemporary chancery hand throughout. An appealing copy. * Covers the fifth regnal year of Edward IV (Easter, Trinity, and Michaelmas terms, 1465-66). This is also known as the "long quinto," the longer of the two Year Books for this regnal year, and one highly regarded for the quality of its reporting. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books. As a series of notes on debates and points of pleadings in Norman England they are of crucial primary sources for our knowledge of medieval common law. They also provide a richly detailed portrait of contemporary English life, customs and manners. The origin of the Year Books is un … [Click Below for Full Description]

Christopher Barker , 1587 A "breeches" Bible in its original brown boards, scratched and with some surface loss, recently rebacked in black leather with 4 raised bands. The prelims and the first 8 leaves are missing and have been replaced by facsimiles from the British Library. Identified by the title page to the New Testament which reads "The New Testament of our Lord Jesus Christ, translated out of Greek by Theod, Beza whereunto are adioined briefe summaries of doctrine upon the Evangelists and Actes of the Apostles, together with the methode of the Epistles of the Apostles by the said Theod. Beza; And also short expositions on the phrases and hard places, taken out of the large annotations of the foresaid Authour and Ioach, Camerarius, by P. Loseter, Villerius, Englished by L Tomson. Imprinted at London by Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie Anno 1587." 190 ,197, 116, 10. Includes the Apocrypha and Psalms as well as "A brief table of the interpretation of the proper names which are chiefly found in the olde Testament". At some point in the 17th or 18th century the bible has been used by someone to practice their calligraphy - a number of pages, notably the title pages of the New Testament and the second part of the Old Testament have numerous letters and words in , now sepia, ink copying the formation of the letters and words in the text. The interior is not clean, showing browning, spotting and sporadic griminess as well as further occasional doodles. Some pages are dog-eared and two have chips to the bottom corner, slightly affecting the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Foxing and minor spotting, contemporary marginal notes and underlinings in ink, ink spots on p. 4 and 173. Half calf from the mid 19th-century, spine gilt and blind stamped. Title with owner's signature of Johan Rosenhane, dated 1613, and from the library of Ericsberg, with its book plate. ESTC S107382. PPM 101 (for the first edition 1586). Carlander II, 42ff. Second edition of Camden's important work on Britain, with each county described with regards to its archaeology, history and geography. On page 551 a new title-page: "Hiberniae et insularum Brianniae adiacentium descriptio". It was first printed one year earlier, in 1586, and its success was great. In four years it passed through three London editions, besides a reprint at Frankfort in 1590, and a fourth London edition in 1594. All these editions had the supervision of the author. The Elizabethan antiquarian William Camden (1551-1623) is often regarded as the founder not only of antiquarian studies, but also of the study of modern history (PPM).

Mercator, Gerard (1512-1594) and Mercator, Rumold (1545-1599)
Duisburg, 1587. THE FIRST DOUBLE-HEMISPHERE WORLD MAP Engraving with original hand color: 151/2" x 201/2" References: Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World (London, 1983), n. 157. This striking map represents a re-working of Mercator's great world map of 1569 by his son and successor Rumold, who transformed it into double-hemispherical form in 1587 and incorporated it into editions of Mercator's influential atlas from 1595. The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names. Surrounding the hemispheres is a strapwork border, while between them at the top margin is an armillary sphere and at the bottom an elaborate compass rose. Gerard Mercator's prominent south-west bulge on the coastline of South America, which was soon to be corrected, is retained. This superb map represents a seminal moment in the history of cartography, for it was the primary instrument by which knowledge of Mercator's projection was diffused throughout Europe.. Book.
