Bonnefons, Jean; Durant, Gilles
Lutetiae (Paris): Abelis L'Angelier, 1587. First Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. Later but likely 17th century half vellum over paste paper boards, some soiling and wear. Slight age toning, Durant penned to the second title, otherwise clean internally. 68, (2), blank; 148, (3), blank. Register of Erotic Books (the 1878 edition and the 1722 English translation). When Bonnefons' Pancharis appeared it was hailed as the finest verse since Catullus (whose Baccia it is modeled on) - it was so popular that the imitations in French by Durant followed so quickly (and without noting the author) that it was long thought to be authored by Bonnefons as well. Very rare, just 6 copies in OCLC and 1 at auction over the last 30+ years. Both works with the privilege leaf and errata at the end. Size: duodecimo (12mo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Poetry; Erotica. Inventory No: 044735.

Bonnefons, Jean; Durant, Gilles
Lutetiae (Paris): Abelis L'Angelier, 1587. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. 17th century full calf, gilt, light wear, hinges slightly rubbed. Slight age toning, trimmed a little close in spots, otherwise clean internally. The Imitations are bound first. 153, (1); (2), 68, Register of Erotic Books (the 1878 edition and the 1722 English translation). Pancharis apparently lacking the rear blank. The Imitations is is an unrecorded (and presumably second) state with an additional 5 pages of dedications and instead of the privilege leaf and errata, a printer's mark of Stephanus Seruain of Lyon. Despite the removal of the errata, only one of the errors was corrected (by stamping an M over an N). Errata and privilege leaf at the rear of Pancharis. Size: duodecimo (12mo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Poetry; Erotica. Inventory No: 044734.

Camden, William:
London: Ralph Newbery, 1587.. [16],648,[22]pp. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title. Minor toning and soiling, but generally clean internally. Contemporary notations throughout text. Very good. Second edition of the first major topography of Britain. Camden was urged and encouraged to undertake this massive survey by Ortelius. Ten years in the making, the work forced the author to "get some knowledge of the Welsh and Anglo-Saxon languages, to read and read again both native and other historians, many of whose works still remained in manuscript, and to ransack and select from the public records" - DNB. The work was an immediate success, passing through three edition in the first four years. "If Camden wsa not the first English historian (in the modern sense of the word), topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies, and his BRITANNIA is the first book which shows the need to evaluate sources. It was the revolutionary subject matter, and its even more evolutionary treatment of the subject, which made it at once the vehicle and the model for research in all three subjects for the next two hundred and fifty years" - PMM. TASSO, Torquato.
ICCU CNCE 48032 (8 copies); WorldCat (2 copies); USTC (9 copies); cf. Adams T249 (1587/88 Ferrara ed. with matching collation). One of the earliest editions of a tragic play in Italian verse by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), published only a year after the first edition of 1587. Torrismondo follows the classical tradition, influenced by Sophocles and Seneca, and tells the story of Alvida, princess of Norway, who is forced to marry Torrismondo, King of the Goths. Tasso had made his name with his epic poem Gerusalemme liberata, published in 1580, and the present work also proved extremely popular.Although the endleaf facing the title-page is signed "Francisco: Drake" and the title-page initialled "FD", both in a contemporary hand, the signature does not closely resemble the known signatures of Sir Francis Drake (ca. 1540-1596), so the owner may have been a namesake. With an occasional running head shaved and the outer fold of the last quire reinforced and an occasional leaf slightly dirty. Otherwise in very good condition. An early edition of a play very popular in its day.
