TAILLEPIED, Noël (ca. 1540-1589)
Rouen, Raphael Du Petit Val, 1587. L' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matham, Jakob (1571 Haarlem 1631)
Manuscript, quarto; 66 leaves followed by 13 leaves with additions in a different, looser hand. 8 full-page illustrations, 4 with volvelles (movable paper figures). With a dedication to Don Pietro Borgia, Prince of Squillace (d. c.1624), dated 1587, and an accompanying sonnet. Contemporary limp vellum sewn on three cords. Some waterstaining throughout, possibly indicating practical use. Housed in a quarter morocco solander box. Unpublished illustrated handwritten manual of navigation in the Levant as well as in the South Seas, representing the state of Italian navigational art in the second half of the 16th century. This is one of the best known Italian navigational manuals of the period. It is probable that Cesareo composed his navigational treatise before 1567 and that several manuscript copies were subsequently produced, of which this is one. Although it was approved for publication by the papal authorities, no printed edition is known. This is precisely the kind of manual that would have been in the hands of the merchant navigators on whose ships the Venetian jeweller Gasparo Balbi famously travelled to India and Arabia during the years 1579?-88, when he made the first European record of Bani Yas, as well as of Abu Dhabi and Dubai by their modern names. The present copy carries a dedication to Don Pietro Borgia, Prince of Squillace, dated 1587. Squillace is on the east coast of Calabria, southern Italy. The modern town was founded as a Byzantine fortress d … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRABO
Geneva: Eustace Vignon, 1587. Two works in one volume, folio, folding engraved double-hemisphere world map in fine condition with large margins, two engraved title-pages, parallel text in Greek and Latin in double columns; 17th-century French calf, spine with raised bands gilt-decorated with the arms of Charles IV Duke of Lorraine in compartments, front board double-gilt ruled with a central laurel wreath motif blind-stamped. Strabo's 1st century world geography. The important first Casaubon edition of Strabo's Geography, his "kolossourgia" or colossal work as he described it himself, with Rumold Mercator's famous double-hemisphere world map. This beautiful copy is from the library of Charles IV Duke of Lorrraine (1604-1675), with his coat of arms stamped in the compartments of the spine. An ally of Gaston d'Orleans, the brother of Louis XIII, and therefore like Gaston opposed by Richelieu, Charles was ultimately forced into abdication. A curious later chapter of his life saw him considering the offer of an Irish delegation to him to serve as Protector of Ireland. Later owners of the book included Nicolas Martingay, archdeacon of Marsal in Lorraine (his fine armorial bookplate was engraved by Sebastien le Clerc) and Abbé Claude, the curé of Marange (Moselle) (a manuscript inscription by him on the title-page is dated 1752).The influential Greek geographer Strabo's work represented 'by far the most important source for ancient geography, a priceless document of the Augustan age, and a compendium of important material derived from lost authors' (OCD). It is the classical world … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bonnefons, Jean; Durant, Gilles
Lutetiae (Paris): Abelis L'Angelier, 1587. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. 17th century full calf, gilt, light wear, hinges slightly rubbed. Slight age toning, trimmed a little close in spots, otherwise clean internally. The Imitations are bound first. 153, (1); (2), 68, Register of Erotic Books (the 1878 edition and the 1722 English translation). Pancharis apparently lacking the rear blank. When Bonnefons' Pancharis appeared it was hailed as the finest verse since Catullus (whose Baccia it is modeled on) - it was so popular that the imitations in French by Durant followed so quickly (and without noting the author) that it was long thought to be authored by Bonnefons as well. Very rare, just 6 copies in OCLC and 1 at auction over the last 30+ years. The Imitations is is an unrecorded (and presumably second) state with an additional 5 pages of dedications and instead of the privilege leaf and errata, a printer's mark of Stephanus Seruain of Lyon. Despite the removal of the errata, only one of the errors was corrected (by stamping an M over an N). Errata and privilege leaf at the rear of Pancharis. Size: duodecimo (12mo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Poetry; Erotica. Inventory No: 044734.
