[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Strabonis Rerum Geographicarum Libri XVII. Isaacus Casaubonus Recensuit, Summóque Studio & Diligentia, Ope Etiam Veterum Codicum, Emendauit, Ac Acmmentariis Illustrauit

Geneva: Eustathius Vignon, 1587. (13 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches). Two parts in one. [8],602,[2],[8],223pp., printed in Greek and Latin in double-columns, plus double-page engraved map by Mercator: "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio." Geneva, 1587 (13 x 21 inches). Titles on titlepage and section-page for second part within historiated woodcut border. Seventeenth-century green vellum over paste-boards, boards gilt with floral roll within two triple-fillets of plain vellum and central oval gilt coat-of-arms of "Ferdinand Hoffman Freyher Herr auf Grevenstein," spine gilt with floral rolls within triple-fillets of plain vellum, title inscribed by hand in plain vellum of top compartment with later number "26" written over title, lacking silk ties, edges sprinkled with red bands. Large (10 x 6 1/2 inch) engraved allegorical bookplate of Ferdinand Hofmann, Freiherr von Grevenstein, designed by M. Göndelach and engraved by L. Kilian. An excellent example of this essential work with a highly important Mercator world map. The first edition of Strabo's Geographia edited by Isaac Casaubon, with the excessively rare double-hemispherical world map by Rumold Mercator based on his father Gerald's renowned 1569 world map. One of the earliest and most important scientific treatises on historical geography, and Strabo's only surviving work, the Geographia represents an initial attempt to compile geographical knowledge in a unified manner. The work provides a survey of the topographical, historical, and political characteristics of the principal regions of the Roman world, also including information concerning philosophy, political theory, geology, mathematics, science, and history. Causabon's famous edition is based on four manuscripts which were in the library of his father-in-law Henri Estienne, the esteemed Geneva printer and humanist. The first appearance of Mercator's only obtainable world map, the two-page double-hemispherical world map is handsomely decorated with elaborate strap-work borders, an armillary sphere, and a compass rose. "Gerald Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into double-hemispherical form by his son Rumold ... Later Rumold's map was incorporated into editions of Mercator's long-lived and influential Atlas from 1595 onwards ... The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names" (Shirley). An important 16th-century edition of Strabo with the first appearance of Mercator's only obtainable world map, bound in a remarkable 17th-century green vellum binding with elaborate gilt decoration. Strabo: Adams S-1908. Mercator: Shirley 157; Wagner, Northwest Coast 146; Koeman Me12.

Jars in Truckh außgestrewten Famos gedichts.

- Bl. A ij mit kl.

P. Aquilon - A.R. Girard, Bibliographie Normande, Baden - Baden, 1985, p. 402, nr. 2. Brunet, V, 646. \

STRABONIS RERUM GEOGRAPHICARUM LIBRI XVII. ISAACUS CASAUBONUS RECENSUIT, SUMMÓQUE STUDIO & DILIGENTIA, OPE ETIAM VETERUM CODICUM, EMENDAUIT, AC ACMMENTARIIS ILLUSTRAUIT

Geneva, 1587. Folio. 17th-century green-stained vellum over paste- boards, boards gilt with floral roll within two triple- fillets of unstained vellum and central oval gilt coat-of- arms of "Ferdinand Hoffman Freyher Herr auf Grevenstein"; spine gilt with floral rolls within triple-fillers of unstained vellum, title inscribed by hand in unstained vellum of top compartment with later number "26" [library mark?] written over title, lacking silk ties, edges sprinkled with red bands. Slight wear to boards and spine, gilt. Large (10 x 6 1/2-inch) engraved allegorical bookplate of Ferdinand Hofmann, Freiherr von Grevenstein, designed by M. Göndelach and engraved by L. Kilian. Light worming in right margin of bookplate, front free endpaper, titlepage, and first two leaves of text (affecting small printed portions). Light age-toning. A very good copy. Casaubon's famous edition is based on four manuscripts which were in the library of his father-in- law, Henri Estienne, the esteemed Geneva printer and humanist. The first appearance of Mercator's only obtainable world map, the two-page double-hemispherical world map is handsomely decorated with elaborate strap-work borders, an armillary sphere, and a compass rose. "Gerald Mercator's great world map of 1569 was condensed into double-hemispherical form by his son Rumold....Later Rumold's map was incorporated into editions of Mercator's long-lived and influential ATLAS from 1595 onwards....The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names" - Shirley. An important 16th-century edition of Strabo with the first appearance of Mercator's only obtainable world map.

Felice Valgrisio, Venice 1587 - FIRST EDITION 8vo. ff. [viii] 64. Italic letter, some Roman. Woodcut printer's device of hands grasping a caduceus to t-p, woodcut initials. Very light foxing to first few leaves. A very good, clean copy in C17 Italian vellum, ms title to spine, edges speckled red. First edition of Girolamo Bardi's important guide to the paintings in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice; the work is very rare, only one copy (Cambridge UL) is recorded in Adams. Little is known of Bardi's life, save that he came from a prominent Florentine family, which produced a number of authors and scholars. The present work is dedicated to Giovanni I Cornaro (1551-1629; Doge from 1625). In 1577, a huge fire damaged the Sala dello Scrutinio and the Great Council Chamber in the Palazzo Ducale, causing serious structural damage and destroying numerous important paintings. Architectural reconstruction work was completed by 1579-1580, and a committee was formed to commission new works of art and devise the iconographic programme which they should follow. Bardi was a member of this committee; the present work reveals not only his 'insider knowledge' of the practical implementation of the restoration project, but also his deep appreciation of art and the care with which the new decorative schema was devised. Many of the paintings from this mass commissioning were inevitably workmanlike, never wholly adequate replacements for the lost works by artists such as Gentile da Fabriano, Pisanello, Alvise Vivarini, Carpaccio, Bellini, Pordenone and Titian. But there were also inspired and innovative choices, such as the new works by Tintorretto, Bassano and Paolo Veronese. (The restoration programme lasted many years, and some famous works, such as Tintorretto's Paradise, were produced long after Bardi's preliminary report.) In the present work, Bardi describes the circumstances of the fire, and the reorganisation of the two rooms worst affected, the Sala dello Scrutinio and the Great Council Chamber. His detailed description of the new pictures, recording celebrated Venetian victories, essentially provides a potted version of the key events of Venetian history, as conceived by the rulers of the late sixteenth century. In addition to the historical paintings, Bardi also describes the portraits of the Doges, a permanent record of whose likeness was a consequence of office. The art historical interest of the account is increased by the fact that Bardi explains the physical layout of the rooms, with details of where each painting was hung in relation to its fellows, allowing us to reconstruct the precise appearance and disposition of the galleries at this period.         HISTORIA DE LAS COSAS MAS NOTABLES, RITOS Y COSTUMBRES, DEL GRAN REYNO DELA CHINA...CON UN ITINERARIO DEL NUEUO MUNDO

Madrid, 1587. Small octavo. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down, gilt red morocco label. Binding edgeworn and rubbed, foredge of front board gnawed. Trimmed close, affecting the first word of the title and the running headline in the preliminary material. Ex- lib., with a small ink stamp on the verso of the titlepage and on the colophon page. Faint old stain in upper margin of second part, else quite clean internally. About very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An early edition of Gonzalez de Mendoza, following the first of 1585, and the second and best edition to contain the Espejo narrative of early exploration in the American Southwest. Antonio de Espejo began his exploration of New Mexico in 1583, in the company of Fray Beltran and fourteen soldiers. The ostensible reason for his expedition was to find Fr. Agustin Rodriguez, who had disappeared in that region the previous year, but much more was accomplished than merely establishing the sad fate of the martyred Franciscan. A true wealth of new information about the traversed territory was garnered, and this is the first publication to include notice of that expedition (found in this edition beginning on leaf 165 of the second part). Most editions of this work do not contain the information about Espejo's New Mexican adventure, and Wagner says that the present edition is only the second with the Espejo narrative, following a Madrid edition of 1586, printed by Querino Gerardo Flamenco. Wagner also notes that many of the errors of that previous edition have been corrected in the present edition, and Palau writes that this edition is considered to be the most complete. Topics of special interest are natural history, Indian landholding practices, and Spanish cultural developments. Ortelius states in his atlas that he obtained more information about America from this work than from any other single source. In addition to the volume's great Americana content, it offers rich data on China, Japan, the Maluccas (the Spice Islands), and the Philippines. The author (1545-1614) was an Augustinian, but he includes much about the activities of Jesuits and Franciscans, seemingly - and this is notable - in an impartial and unprejudiced manner. Copies of the Spanish language editions of this work that contain the account of the Espejo expedition have become very rare in commerce.

BRITANNIA SIVE FLORENTISSIMORVM REGNORVM, ANGLIAE, SCOTIAE, HIBERNIAE, ET INSVLARVM ADIACENTIUM EX INTIMA ANTIQUITATE CHOROGRAPHICA DESCRIPTIO

London, 1587. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title. Minor toning and soiling, but generally clean internally. Contemporary notations throughout text. Very good. Second edition of the first major topography of Britain. Camden was urged and encouraged to undertake this massive survey by Ortelius. Ten years in the making, the work forced the author to "get some knowledge of the Welsh and Anglo-Saxon languages, to read and read again both native and other historians, many of whose works still remained in manuscript, and to ransack and select from the public records" - DNB. The work was an immediate success, passing through three edition in the first four years. "If Camden was not the first English historian (in the modern sense of the word), topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies, and his BRITANNIA is the first book which shows the need to evaluate sources. It was the revolutionary subject matter, and its even more evolutionary treatment of the subject, which made it at once the vehicle and the model for research in all three subjects for the next two hundred and fifty years" - PMM.

per Sebastianum Henricipetri, Basel 1587 - FIRST EDITION thus. Folio. pp. [52], 979, [1]. Roman, Hebrew, Greek and Italic letter. Woodcut printer's device on title and on final verso, woodcut diagram, historiated and floriated woodcut initials in various sizes. Light age yellowing with some marginal spotting, quires a-p lightly browned, small paper flaw restored in very outer blank margin of first three leaves. A very good copy, with good margins, in contemporary vellum over thin pasteboard, yapp edges covers bordered with blind double rule, monogramed F within oval gilt surmounted by crown on upper cover, arms gilt within oval on lower, remains of ties. First edition of the great compendium of Christian cabalistic literature, compiled by Johannes Pistorius, physician to Jacob, Margrave of Baden-Durlach. It contains Judah Abrabanel's Dialoghi di Amore, Archangelus de Burgonuovo's commentaries on the Conclusiones of Pico della Mirandola, and works by Paulus Ricius, De Coelesti Agricultura (1514 – a compilation of texts including Portae Lucis), De Verbo Mirifico, the De Arte Cabalistica of Reuchlin, and the 1480 translation of the Sepher Yetsirah. "This very popular, varied, and lengthy tome of latin translations, ‘Writers of the Cabalistic Arts’, was surely, if there was one, the Norton Reader of Cabala of the Renaissance. It was an anthology of what must have seemed to Pistorius the most important or most accessible (and appealing) cabalistic texts. More volumes were planned, but this is the only one definitely known to have appeared. Nevertheless, there is probably no more important or influential publication on Cababla in the Renaissance, especially from a Christian (however, Lutheran-Protestant) point of view, than this book, which Blau even claims flatly was one of the most popular and widely read religious documents of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as well as a major conduit for the diffusion of Christian Cababla in English literature" Philip Beitchman ‘Alchemy of the Word: Cabala of the Renaissance’. See Breichman for a detailed breakdown of the works included in this anthology. The Artis Cabalisticae was widely consulted by Milton and therefore the source of his understanding of cabalistic mysticism (Jewish Encyclopedia 13, p.566). A planned second volume containing Jewish cabalistic works was never realised. Pistorius’ father was a well-known Protestant minister, though Pistorius turned from Lutheranism to Calvinism and then entered the Catholic Church in 1588, becoming a priest in 1591, then vicar-general of Constance until 1594. He was an imperial councillor, cathedral provost of Breslau, Apostolic prothonotary, and in 1601 confessor to the Emperor Rudolph II. His numerous writings against Protestantism, while evincing clearness, skill, and thorough knowledge of his opponents, especially of Luther, are marked by controversial sharpness and coarseness. We have unfortunately not as yet been able to identify the gilt monogramed F on the upper cover or the arms on the lower though they are undoubtedly the arms of a contemporary noble German or Swiss family.         Daphne

Antwerp: Abraham Ortelius, 1587. unbound. View. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 14.5" x 19.25". This impressive view of the Daphne (modern day Harbiye), a suburb of the ancient Greek and Roman city of Antioch (Antakya), located on the Orontes River in modern day Turkey, dates to circa 1601. Centered on the temple of Daphne which a dedicated to the Pythian Apollo, the view depicts the "paradise of Daphne", a park of wood and waters, an illustrates a perfect mix of history and myth. The view includes the temple complex surrounded by woods and fields and hills in the distance. The Orontes River can be seen in the left and top of the view. This view is from Ortelius's "Parergon Theatri", a series of historical maps based on ancient geography, published from 1579 onwards, which sometimes appeared as a separate publication and at times were included in the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Stains in the margin, not affecting the image. Minor wormhole over title. Latin text on verso. Abraham Ortelius (1527--1598), a Flemish cartographer and geographer, is widely regarded as one of the important and influential cartographers in history. He is known for his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which was the first modern atlas. This is an uncommon uncolored example of this wonderful view by Ortelius.

s.e., Romae 1587 - In 16, pp. (8b) + 39 + (9b). Fr. nero e rosso. Bella vignetta inc. all'acq. al fr. raff. San Giovanni Decollato. Testo stampato in nero e rosso. Capilettera figg. Tarletto alle prime 5 cc. Antica cart. rustica. ITA

Foxing and minor spotting, contemporary marginal notes and underlinings in ink, ink spots on p. 4 and 173. Half calf from the mid 19th-century, spine gilt and blind stamped. Title with owner?s signature of Johan Rosenhane, dated 1613, and from the library of Ericsberg, with its book plate. ESTC S107382. PPM 101 (for the first edition 1586). Carlander II, 42ff. Second edition of Camden?s important work on Britain, with each county described with regards to its archaeology, history and geography. On page 551 a new title-page: ?Hiberniae et insularum Brianniae adiacentium descriptio? It was first printed one year earlier, in 1586, and its success was great. In four years it passed through three London editions, besides a reprint at Frankfort in 1590, and a fourth London edition in 1594. All these editions had the supervision of the author. The Elizabethan antiquarian William Camden (1551-1623) is often regarded as the founder not only of antiquarian studies, but also of the study of modern history (PPM). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Newton points out in his dedication that his work is not a word-for-word translation and, on occasion where the original lacked clarity or when it was not sufficiently succinct, he made various addtions or omissions. Levinus Lemnius (1505-68), a physician and philosopher of Zeeland, is considered to be the first author to describe the plants of the Holy Scirptures. His herbal ran into many editions and, besides the English version, there is also a French translation.'Thomas Newton (1542?-1607) was a native of Cheshire, and he signed the end of his translation of 1587: "Thomas Newtonus, Cestreshyrius". He was the author of various publications on hisotircal, medical, and theological subjects, and the translator of several Latin works. He was renowned as a writer of Latin verse' (Henrey, I p 36).
