Hulton Paul H. (Hope), Quinn David B. (Beers) [1909-2002] and John White [fl. 1585-1593] with contributions by W.C. Sturtevant, C. E Raven, R. A. Skelton, and Louis B. Wright, preface by Edward Croft-Murray
White was the expedition artist on Sir Walter Raleigh's first colonizing voyage to Roanoke Island in 1585. During a 13 months period he made watercolor drawings of the Algonquian speaking Indians of North Carolina, their settlements, and flora and fauna essential to their material culture, depicting for the first time many species native to the 'New World', and under Harriot's direction, drawing, "the most accurate map of any complex land mass-littoral charted in the 16th century" (Tise). Despite their extraordinary significance, the watercolors weren't published until the 20th century. They were primarily known through the highly influential engravings made from them by Theodore de Bry. This much cited scholarly work, 12 years in the making; "planned on a far more ambitious scale than any previous attempt"; has the first color facsimiles of White's drawings, 76 superb, original size pochoir (stencil print) plates, using color collotype printing and by hand application of secondary color with foil stencils. Limited to 620 examples, 300 for purchase in the U.S., this is no. 191 (stamped on the justification page), complete in the publisher's boards and slipcase with mounted labels. Printed in Great Britain by University Printing House, Cambridge, title pages with red & black letters, volume 1-text, volume 2-160 plates including 76 pochoirs printed on 1 side of the leaf, color collotypes in Paris by Imprimerie Duval from color photographs of the originals by Peter Parkinson and hand colored in Issy-Les-Moulineaux at Ateliers M. presso Aldo, Roma 1585 - In 4° ant. (20 x 14,4). Pp.(32) + 327 + (1). Two old stamp on title (nobiliary library). A few quires browned, hardly the "D" signature, but overall a nice copy in contemporary limp vellum, title manuscript on spine. Prima traduzione italiana. First Italian edition, following the original French of this important work divided in twelve chapters concerning various matters. Le Roy, a French humanist wrote the first biographical essay on Francois Budé. ADAMS, L-534. BM-STC Italian Books, p.376. ICCU/EDIT16, n.27657. RENOUARD, 235.1.

[JAPAN / JESUITS / COELHO, Gaspar.]
Venice: I Gioliti, 1585. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo., 103 pp. Bound in old vellum. Discrete former ownership stamp on title. Gutter margin of title reinforced; inconsequential toning, otherwise excellent. Rare early edition of this Jesuit letter containing news of missions and activity in Japan from the year 1582, the only edition (of 5 printed that year) to contain a title-page advertising the famous Japanese embassy of 1584-86. Significantly, the work also discusses the embassy, the participants and their noble lineage, and expresses the hope that the embassy will prove a convincing sign of the Jesuit's spectacular success in Japan (p. 7). The present imprint of this edition comprises the first entry in Boscaro's bibliography of printed works related to the embassy. It thus stands at the head of nearly 50 works printed in 1585 (alone) to record and commemmorate an event that-in addition to providing a public relations coup for the Jesuits-became a watershed moment in cross-cultural exchange between the Orient and the West: "no Japanese emissaries to Europe, either before or since, aroused comparable interest or enthusiasm" (Lach). In the annals of international relations between Europe and Japan in the 16th C, it is particularly noteworthy "how the physical presence of the Japanese [in Europe] stimulated an unexpected number of typographical presentations" (Boscaro), of which this particular Gioliti edition with the titlepage advertising the embassy-Portata de Novo Dal Giapone Dai Signori Ambasciatori-is the very first. Boscaro notes that there … [Click Below for Full Description]
