Cordier, Sinica, cols. 14-15; Sabin 27781, cf. 27775; VD16 G 2658; cf. Reed & Demattè 1. First Latin edition of Juan González de Mendoza's very popular work on China, "one of the most influential early books on China to be published in Europe" (Reed & Demattè). It offers a detailed description of China together with lengthy accounts of several recent missionary voyages. It was first published in Spanish in 1585, when it was the first European book in which Chinese characters appeared. "The book's first section is a survey in three sections that introduces China's history, antiquities, architecture, populace, religious beliefs and ceremonies, agriculture, military organization, and government. ... Mendoza's volume also contains descriptions of Japan and the Philippines and a chronicle of Spanish missions in the New World" (Reed & Demattè). "According to Nicholas Antonio, the ... Itinerary of the New World ... was written by F. Martin Ignacio, and was never published separately... The itinerary gives curious details concerning the Canaries, St. Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, Porto Rico, and especially Mexico. Ortelius, in his Atlas, declared that he had received more information concerning America, from this itinerary than from any other single book" (Sabin). Slightly browned throughout, title-page somewhat soiled and partly detached, otherwise in good condition with some occasional underscoring. Binding stained and with some minor damage to the extremities, but still firm and otherwise good.

1585. STCN 850697484; Unger I, D. Hendrick van CLEEVE (Anversa 1524 - 1589)
" A nice view taken from the rare ""Ruinarum vari prospectus ruriumq. Aliquot delinationes series"". Hendrick van Cleve or Cliven III, son and pupil of William van Cleve, moved to Italy in the second half of the XVI century; besides a painting depicting a view of Rome (1550), he realized a considerable amount of drawing which he afterwards used as preparatory for the engravings he realized in Antwerp and published by Philip Galle in 1587. The views, whose main subject is Rome but there are also other European cities, bear the inscription "Henri. Cliven. inven."" or ""Henri Cliven pingebat"" on lower part, which testify their origin, but not necessarily the fact that he realized them. Engraving, good impression on contemporary laid pape, very good conditions." Anversa Antwerpen

Jost Amman
Sumptib. Sigismundi Feyrabendij, Frankfurt. Woodcut of the Pope on title page, woodcut printer's device on recto of last leaf of first part, second title and recto of last. 103 half-page woodcuts, floriated initials and tail pieces in second part. First edition of this important work on the costumes of the clergy and religious orders, the fruit of the creative partnership of Jost Amman and publisher Sigismund Feyrabend, illustrated with over one hundred woodcuts, among the finest examples of the use of the woodcut for illustration. There is a short text by Franciscus Modius which traces the origins of the Religious Orders, and each cut is accompanied with Latin verses which include descriptions of the colours of the various habits, and details of the orders. The costumes represent the most important figures of the Roman Catholic Church (Pope, cardinal, patriarch, bishop, deacon, legate, canon, priest) and the medieval and modern Religious Orders (among the most significant, the Theatines, Benedictines, Vallombrosians, Celestines, Templars, Camaldulians, Hieronymites, Carthusians, Cistercians, Premonstratenses, Augustinians, Dominicans, Carmelites, Capuchins etc.). The illustrations depict the main monastic Orders (eg the largest, Benedictines), mendicant Orders (eg the Dominicans founded in 1215 by St. Dominic) and regular Clerics (eg the Theatines founded in 1524 by St. Cajetan and Caraffa, afterwards Paul IV). They also include nuns (such as Dominicans, Poor Clares, Brigittines.), women who, hardly less than men, played a great part in monasticism. All are standing, apart … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIONYSIUS AREOPAGITA - DENYS L'AREOPAGITE - PSEUDO-DENYS L'AREOPAGITE.
apud Gulielmum Rouillium (Guillaume Rouillé), Lugduni (Lyon) 1585 - 16° (12 x 8 cm), 8 ff. (titre avec vignette, epistola, index librorum), 690 pp., 23 ff.

Bibliografia: Gamba, 115. Papanti, 371. Brunet, IV, p. 215. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Adamo SCULTORI (Mantova 1530 circa - Roma 1587)
Bibliografia: Bellini 21-92; Bartsch 27-98. Dimensioni 105x140 circa. A series of identical size engravings depicting some of the figures painted in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. Due to the differences this engravings bear, we can assume that, very likely, Adamo has realized them after the preparatory drawing and not from a direct observation of the Last Judgment. The series has been engraved by Scultori around 1585; every sheet bears on lower left the author's monogram and on lower right progressive numbers. Nagler mentions a test example, before the numbers were added. Magnificent works, rich in shades, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark and mounted a finestra … [Click Below for Full Description]
