Bazan, Alvaro de
First edition. An important and rare account of the naval victory fought off Angra for the control of Terceira (Azores), on 23 June 1583 between the Spanish fleet and a combined force of Portuguese and French fleets. The Azores were of great strategic and geographical importance as the stopping point for fleets en route to or from the Indies, thus the scene for the following naval engagements during the reign of Elizabeth I. The Spanish were lead by one of their foremost Commanders, Alvaro de Bazan y Guzman (1526 - 1588), Marquess of Santa Cruz and Captain General of the Ocean Sea; Bazan had previously gained fame for his participation at the Battle of Lepanto (1570), where the Holy League defeated the Ottomans, also later on the preparations for the Armada Invencible (1588). In the same year, a Spanish edition under the title "Relacion de la jornada, expugnacion, y conquista de la Isla Tercera" was published. The victory was crushing and definitive, after the landing forces occupied the islands, a trial commenced with Bazan as Judge. Since formally Spain and France were not at war, the charge to the officers was piracy; to this they responded refuting the charges and showing dispatches from the King of France, however Bazan -probably under orders of the King of Spain, in order to prevent having to declare war against France- regarded the documents as false, declared them guilty and condemned to death. Lords and high ranking officers were decapitated and soldiers over 18 years old hanged. Palau, 25923.

Contemporary vellum, small indentation on front cover; possibly rebound in the sixteenth century with 2 leaves of contemporary wastepaper (as endpapers) noting Galen, medicine and pharmacy. Generally, an excellent copy, from the Lehmann library of logic. First edition of Scribonius' work containing his valuable commentary in support of Petrus Ramus, the anti-Aristotelian philosopher from Northern France. Scribonius (fl. 1576-1583), a physician and philosopher from Marburg, taught at the Corbach school, where he lectured on logic and natural philosophy. He published a series of philosophical and medical writings, the most famous of which is his Triumphus logicae Rameae (Basil, 1583), in which he leads a lively polemic, with the continuous explanation, supplementation and critical correction of the dialectic of Ramus against the German reform theologian Johannes Piscator (1546-1625), as well as Friedrich Beurhaus (1536-1609), who defended Ramus in his Defensio P. Rami dialecticae per scholasticas quarundam interpretationum, animadversionum, triumphorum et emendationum disquisitiones (Erfurt, 1588), and other Ramists. Followers of Ramus were devoted. Scribonius, for example, attacked other Ramists on more than one occasion for departing from the teaching of the Dialectica. Yet, at the same time, he emphatically declared that every adherent of Ramist philosophy must swear to the principle of libertas philosophandi, the freedom to philosophize. Francois de Belleforest; Bandello, Matteo; Pierre Boaistuau [Shakespeare Source]
Lyon: Cesar Farine, 1583. Second edition. Volume 6 of 7 of the Works of Belleforest. 16mo.(1)-840, [24] pages, including terminal blank. Contemporary vellum, ink spine title. Soiling to vellum, minor wear. Head of title page repaired, "Le Tresor des" supplied in manuscript, minor soiling and foxing. Small losses to printed shoulder notes on pages 191-192; 477-478. Old ink ownership at the head of page 3. Contains the source story for Hamlet, the Saxo Grammaticus tale of Amleth listed as Avec quelle ruse Amleth, qui depuis fut roy de Dannemarch, vengea la mort de son pere Horvuendille, occis par Fengon sonfrere, & autre occurrence de son histoire. Belleforest's translation and adaptation of the "histoires tragiques" by the Italian Matteo Bandello, which built on the work of Pierre Boaistuau, Saxo's story was first printed in Paris in 1514, and Francois de Belleforest translated it into French in 1572, as part of his collection of tragic legends, Histoires Tragiques. It is noted that a lost pre-Shakepearean play appeared in 1589 referred to as the Ur-Hamlet is viewed by scholars as the primary source for Shakespeare's Hamlet as well as the German version Fratricide Punished. An English translation of Belleforest's text appeared in 1608 called The Hystorie of Hamblet. Though it is more likely that the The Hystorie of Hamblet is based on Shakespeare's play, not the other way around. Brunet I, 638; FRBNF 30079880; OCLC 83293446.

(incl. engraved title), 770, [2], 771-1583, [1] pp., 12 leaves. Two parts in one vol. Thick 4to, cont. vellum over boards (light browning). Würzburg: J.A. Endter & Wolffgang Jr., 1662. First edition, and a fine copy, of this voluminous work, one of the best of the 17th century on the wonders of animate nature and physical phenomena. The first volume is dedicated to the wonders of the human race (monsters, etc.) but contains also one of the most complete treatises on demonology, including angels and ghosts. The second volume treats animals and atmospherical phenomena, richly illustrated with plates. There are of course numerous references to electricity, lightning and thunder. The text also deals extensively with meteors and other heavenly bodies, astrology, witchcraft, portents, and medicine; the section on animals is important for its information on South American mammals. Schott (1608-66), a Jesuit and disciple of Kircher, rendered definite services to scientific investigation by his correspondence with numerous experimenters and mechanicians and by publicizing the achievements of contemporary physicists. Very nice copy. Bookplate of Docteur François Moutier. ? Caillet 10004-(calling for 42 plates only). Thorndike, VII, Chap. 21. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

CESALPINO, Andreas
20 p.l., 621, [10] pp. Thick 4to, cont. vellum (name erased from blank portion of title), yapp edges, ties gone. Florence: G. Marescotti, 1583. First edition of a rare book; this is the foundational work of scientific botany. The ideas of Cesalpino (1519-1603), "governed the development of botany in the 17th century and…extended into the 18th. He was perhaps the first great theorist in botany. His method was Aristotelian and deductive; but he based his principles on accurate observation…He was the first to describe in accurate detail the parts of flowers, seeds, and fruits, and based his analytic classification on those parts. He was perhaps the first to wrestle in print with the concept of species; and his solution, like those of many modern botanists, was based on the capacity of a group to reproduce its kind."-Rickett, "Botany from 840 to 1700 A.D." in Hunt Catalogue, Vol. I, pp. xxvii-xxviii. "The fullest statement of contemporary botanical theory and the most powerful contribution to its further development were given by Andreas Cesalpino in his De Plantis libri XVI…The whole work is of the greatest scientific and historical significance and deserves close attention. Written in clear but condensed philosophical style, its importance has not always been fully appreciated, in spite of the very high tribute paid to Cesalpino by Ray and Linnaeus."-Morton, History of Botanical Science, pp. 128-29. A fine and crisp copy. ❧ Dibner, Heralds of Science, 20. Printing & the Mind of Man 97. Sparrow, Milestones of Science, 34.

DU BARTAS, G. de Saluste, sieur;

Cfr. Sapori, 1465. Non in Brunet e Graesse..
