L'incisione è inserita nello Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae. Engraving, 1583, dated in the lower margin, with name of editor Claudio Duchetti. Magnificient work on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. In 1583 Claudio Duchetti published a reconstruction of the Tomb of Hadrian, based upon the illustration on page 6 in Antonio Labacco's "Libro...appartenente all'architettura", published in Rome in 1559. The anonymous print is inscribed with a long text below, with an interesting claim: the large bronze pine code then located in the atrium of Old St Peter's, today in Belvedere, was originally located, as is shown in the print, on the summit of the structure. The engraving in included in Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae. Huelsen, n. 128 a/d; Witcombe, p. 326.

Carlo Sigonio
The Hebrew Republic of Carlo Sigonio was one of the first works dedicated to the religious and political institutions of the ancient Hebrew state, and it was the first book to frame this kind of research under the Latin title respublica Hebraeorum. Soon after its original publication in Bologna in 1582, it was suppressed by the Church because of its strenuous antimonarchism, and it reappeared in Italy only in 1754. GOOD++ to near VERY GOOD CONDITION with respect to grading antiquarian volumes and has heavy foxing and soiling throughout as shown, and no missing pages, a few edge dings. There is a small tearing of the paper on the title page beneath the ex-libris stamp to the right of the publisher's large colophon which can only be seen from the verso, thus the last photo shows the small tearing. It only shows when the page is turned, thus is only mentioned for accuracy. Firm binding, 1,046 pages + 3. This is the rare folio of Jacob Billius' D. GREGORII NAZIANZENI COGNOMENTO THEOLOGI OPERA OMNIA QUAE EXTANT, or THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GREGORY OF NAZIANZEN, in both Latin and Greek. This is the definitive work which has collated all of the extant material concerning Gregory of Nazianzen. It is the 'go to' source for any and all Nazianzen scholarship and has rarely come up for auction, unlike the earlier and incomplete first edition. This is one of those rare instances where the second edition far out-values the first. This is the rarer and fuller, Second Edition by Iacobo Billio (Jacob Billius), printed in Paris in 1583. The book is a 14 inch folio in full, hand-tooled leather with a Gold Gilt decorated cover and gold gilt decorated, ribbed spine. The binding has been professionally restored with new endpapers and the book is printed on heavy rag paper. The book measures approximately 9 inches wide by around 13 4/5 inches high. Mançanas, Eugenio. Training jinetes for bull hunting
Toledo, Juan Rodriguez, impressor y mercader de libros for Pecho Rodriguez,1583. Small 4to. [4] + 38 + [4] leaves. Roman letter. Large title woodcut portrait, 6 full-page woodcuts, 17 vertical half-page woodcuts, full-page woodcut heraldic device at end; 25 ornamental initials (1 large & historiated, 1 medium-sized). 18th century quarter sheep, decorative boards with worm-damage repaired. An early influential treatise on how to bridle and to shoe a horse ‘a la gineta’, a style of riding developed in Renaissance Spain for hunting bulls. The rider was taught the role of the bit as essential means of communication between himself and the horse; he learnt to use short stirrups with slightly bent legs to ensure maximum spur contact which allowed fast stops and sudden changes of direction, essential for out manoeuvering a bull. The technique was also widely practiced in contemporary Spanish-dominated southern Italy, where horses of Spanish origin were called “Ginnetti” (jennets or light coursers). The book is divided into 22 chapters discussing the correct bit for each horse based on studying many differences in horses’ mouths, 7 chapters on shoeing including remarkable woodcuts of a horse’s skull, hoofs, and 2 iron horse shoe patterns, and a third part with 18 striking illustrations (1 full-page & 17 vertical half-page) of diverse elaborate bits designed to control the horse which are thought to be of north African origin. The jinetes were developed during the reconquest of Spain from the Moors, whose light cavalry tactics the Crusaders adopted during the 14th century. The fine … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Cologne,: Gerardus Campensis, 1583. [Cologne,: Gerardus Campensis,, 1583. 1583]. Engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, two shields cut out and replaced with blanks. The first Leo Belgicus was published by Michael von Aitzing (1530-1598) in his work 'De Leone Belgico' of 1583. Here the lion rampant, with right paw raised, faces right, with the lion's back following the coastline. The text to the far right is both an introduction to the lion and an apologia. The lion is introduced "in such a form as it has never been seen before, in order that you will better understand the description of the various parts it comprises". The text goes on to affirm Aitzing's and the lion's neutrality in the ongoing war, and reassures the reader that "you will find everything more truthful and acceptable since we personally observed and verified all the facts on both sides". He finishes with a plea that his Leo Belgicus will not be studied "for the purpose of calumniation but to find out the truth". To the far left, in England, is Aitzing's monogram; and next to it a table with a list of the Stadtholders of the Seventeen Provinces, together with each province's coat-of-arms, and the number of towns and villages within each province. The upper part of the table bears the acronym M.A.R.I.A., which stands for the names of the five governors of the Provinces between 1559 and 1579. Between the lion's feet is text relating to the wars between France and Spain; most notably that between Henry II and Philip II from 1558 to 1559, in which Aitzing himself fought. Dialogues satirical, mocking the courtship behavior, modes of dress and languages (fashion speak Italian French words for example, or the conventions of language on securities).
