Paris: 1583. GOOD++ to near VERY GOOD CONDITION with respect to grading antiquarian volumes and has heavy foxing and soiling throughout as shown, and no missing pages, a few edge dings. There is a small tearing of the paper on the title page beneath the ex-libris stamp to the right of the publisher's large colophon which can only be seen from the verso, thus the last photo shows the small tearing. It only shows when the page is turned, thus is only mentioned for accuracy. Firm binding, 1,046 pages + 3. This is one of those rare instances where the second edition far out-values the first, which did not contain all of his writings. This edition is exhaustive due to newly discovered manuscripts, thus more valuable than the 1571 edition and far, far scarcer. This is the very rare folio of Jacob Billius' D. GREGORII NAZIANZENI COGNOMENTO THEOLOGI OPERA OMNIA QUAE EXTANT, or THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GREGORY OF NAZIANZEN, in both Latin and Greek. This is the definitive work which has collated ALL of the extant material concerning Gregory of Nazianzen. It is the 'go to' source for any and all Nazianzen scholarship and has rarely come up for auction, unlike the earlier and incomplete first edition. This is the much rarer and fuller, Second Edition by Iacobo Billio (Jacob Billius), printed in Paris in 1583. The book is a 14 inch folio in full, hand-tooled leather with a Gold Gilt decorated cover and gold gilt decorated, ribbed spine. The binding has been professionally restored with new endpapers and the book is printed on heavy rag paper. The book measures approximately 9 inches wide … [Click Below for Full Description]

Patrizi, Francesco.
Ferrara, Domenico Mamarelli, 1583. 4to. (6), 92 ff. With armorial title woodcut, 12 folding engraved plates and several woodcut initials. Contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title to bottom edge. First edition. - A major study on the ancient Roman army, based on the author's reading of Polybius, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Patrizi posits that the art of warfare is the basis of peace and human happiness. His benchmark are the Romans, whose army he views as superior to all others - in particular that of the Ottomans: if the Christian armies could only emulate the military forces of ancient Rome, he writes, they need not fear the Turks. The only modern army to come close to this ideal, he feels, was that of Duke Alfonso I d'Este gelungen, whose methods of fortification and siegecraft were exemplary. It is therefore perhaps little surprise that Patrizi dedicates his work to Alfonso II d'Este, the ruler of Ferrara and the grandson of Alfonso I. The engravings show military formations and camps, individual legionaries, attack formations, etc. - Binding repaired with modern endpapers. A good copy with very insignificant traces of worming to the title and the final two leaves, as well as a few repaired edge defects. BM-STC Italian 493. Adams P 437. Edit 16, CNCE 47279. Graesse V, 169. Not in Jähns or Cockle; not in Göllner. [Attributes: First Edition]

L'incisione è inserita nello Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae. Engraving, 1583, dated in the lower margin, with name of editor Claudio Duchetti. Magnificient work on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, in excellent condition. In 1583 Claudio Duchetti published a reconstruction of the Tomb of Hadrian, based upon the illustration on page 6 in Antonio Labacco's "Libro...appartenente all'architettura", published in Rome in 1559. The anonymous print is inscribed with a long text below, with an interesting claim: the large bronze pine code then located in the atrium of Old St Peter's, today in Belvedere, was originally located, as is shown in the print, on the summit of the structure. The engraving in included in Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae. Huelsen, n. 128 a/d; Witcombe, p. 326.

GAMBARA, Lorenzo
Romae: Bartholomaei Bonfadini, & Titi Diani, 1583. 1583 Voyages of Christopher Columbus Navigation Gambara Peter Martyr New WorldAn incredible 16th-century epic work on the voyages of Columbus!Lorenzo Gambara was a 16th-century Italian poet who is known exclusively for his poem 'Colombiade' - an epic poem on the life and adventures of Christopher Columbus. While not published until 1581, it was commissioned by Anthony Perrenot, a Burgundian cleric, nearly 40 years earlier. This work was one of the most important early accounts of Columbus. Note this passage from Mary Watt,"The timing of the poem and patron to whom it was dedicated, speak loudly to the role that the expedition played in the early 16th-century Italian imagination. The poem consists of four books, recounting Columbus's four voyages respectively. Gambara used Peter Martyr's accounts as his foundation so that his poem represents an Italian interpretation of the New World. Gambara describes Columbus's voyages as having exceeded those of Hercules. Columbus has surpassed the ancients, and in Dante-esque fashion not only passed through the danger but made it to the other shore safely...(Watt, p.126-127)Curiously, Gambara was so determined to promote Italian pride, that he describes the towns that Columbus discovered in the New World as Roman - Roman streets, forums, assembly, senate, "implying that the landing signals are a return to a Roman Golden Age" and that an imperial Roman plan has been established to take over the New World.Item number: #8295Price: $9500GAMBARA, Lorenzo Laurentii Gambarae Brixiani De nauigat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
Bulino, circa 1583, firmato in lastra in basso. Engraving, 1583 circa, signed on lower plate. After a drawing by Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradano. Example in the second state, with some writings added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to platemark and laid on collector's paper, in excellent condition. Goltzius engraved three different portraits of the Flemish artist; this plate is the oldest and derives from a drawing of Stradano with whom Goltzius had business relations. The three women in the decorative frame depict the allegories of architecture, painting and drawing. Beautiful example of a striking portrait. 1583.
Opera molto rara. Etching, 1583 circa, signed upper right with monogram: 'MA'. A very good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "rhombus with six-pointed star in a circle" watermark (Briquet, 6097), trimmed at margins, occasional foxing, generally in good condition. According to Dillon in Venice 1980, Venus's figure corresponds in reverse to Andromeda, engraved by Hendrik Goltzius in 1583 (Hollstein VIII.34.157), but it remains unsolved, which print was made first. Abraham ORTELIUS - Philippe GALLE (Haarlem, 1537; Anversa, 12 o 29 Marzo 1612)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham ORTELIUS - Philippe GALLE (Haarlem, 1537; Anversa, 12 o 29 Marzo 1612)
[Click Below for Full Description]

ABOUT THE GENEVA BIBLE The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress (1678). It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower (Pilgrim Hall Museum and Dr. Jiang have collected several bibles of Mayflower passengers). The Geneva Bible was used by many English Dissenters, and it was still respected by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the time of the English Civil War, in the booklet "Cromwell's Soldiers' Pocket Bible". This version of the Bible is significant because, for the very first time, a mechanically printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: 1583. GOOD++ to near VERY GOOD CONDITION with respect to grading antiquarian volumes and has heavy foxing and soiling throughout as shown, and no missing pages, a few edge dings. There is a small tearing of the paper on the title page beneath the ex-libris stamp to the right of the publisher's large colophon which can only be seen from the verso, thus the last photo shows the small tearing. It only shows when the page is turned, thus is only mentioned for accuracy. Firm binding, 1,046 pages + 3. This is the rare folio of Jacob Billius' D. This is one of those rare instances where the second edition far out-values the first. The book measures approximately 9 inches wide by around 13 4/5 inches high. Gabriello Falloppio
Frncofvti, Andrea Wecheli, 1583. In-folio plein veau de l'époque, 12 f. n. ch., 848 pp et 32 f. n. ch. d'index. Gabriele Falloppio often known by his Latin name Fallopius, was one of the most important anatomists and physicians of the sixteenth century. He was born in Modena and died in Padua. His family was noble but very poor and it was only by a hard struggle he succeeded in obtaining an education. Financial difficulties led him to join the clergy, and in 1542, he became a canon at Modena's cathedral. He studied medicine at the University of Ferrara, at that time one of the best medical schools in Europe. He received his MD in 1548 under the guidance of Antonio Musa Brassavola. After taking his degree he worked at various medical schools and then became professor of anatomy at Ferrara, in 1548. Girolamo Fabrici was one of his famous students. He was called the next year to the University of Pisa, then the most important university in Italy. In 1551 Falloppio was invited to occupy the chair of anatomy and surgery at the University of Padua. He also held the professorship of botany and was superintendent of the botanical gardens. Though he died when less than forty, he had made his mark on anatomy for all time. Falloppio's own work dealt mainly with the anatomy of the head. He added much to what was known before about the internal ear and described in detail the tympanum and its relations to the osseous ring in which it is situated. He also described minutely the circular and oval windows (fenestræ) and their communication with the vestibule and cochlea. He was the first t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1583. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Georg Major was a 16th-century Lutheran who was prominent during the Protestant Reformation. He published various books and writings pertaining to the course of the Reformation, but he also produced shorter poetic verses many of which have nothing to do with the Reformation at all. This 1583 edition of 'Sententiae' is a fine, vellum-bound example of these poems. [Attributes: First Edition]

"At the time of the Council of Trent, when the Vulgate was declared 'authentic,' the Roman Church possessed no duly authorized edition which was accepted as a standard. [The first] and the second Louvain revisions were practically accepted as authorized editions until the publication of the Sixtine Bible of 1590." (D&M 6129) This 1583 printing is a reissue of the original 1574 edition, revised by members of the Louvain University faculty and published by the famous Plantin Press. This Bible was published with the help of King Philip II of Spain Per Voet: "One of the most impressive and beautiful editions of the Plantin Press.".

OSUNA, Francisco de
Venezia: Appresso Francesco Ziletti, 1583. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Francisco de Osuna was an early 16th-century Spanish Franciscan friar who composed some of the most important and influential works of Franciscan mysticism. His best book on this topic was 'The Spiritual Alphabet'. This work discusses the importance of a relationship and communion with God and how to achieve those. The title is derived from Osuna organizing spiritual maxims and anecdotes alphabetically and was known to have significantly influenced Saint Teresa of Jesus.
