Mit 2 Titelvignetten in Holzschnitt und 42 ganzseitigen Pflanzenholzschnitten. "Mit besonderer Vorliebe hat Rauwolf alle medicinischen Dinge, Krankheiten, Heilmittel, Bäder, Speisen und Getränke und alle Industrien besprochen, nicht ohne daß durch Leichtgläubigkeit, wie sie der Zeit gegenüber den Erzählungen von fremden Ländern eigen war, auch manches Fabelhafte (s. die Schilderung des Greifes im 8. Capitel des 2. Buches) mit unterläuft. Rauwolf muß ein genaues Tagebuch geführt haben, er würde sonst nicht im Stande gewesen sein, eine solche Fülle einzelner genauer Angaben zu bieten" (F. Ratzel in ADB 27). In der Schilderung seiner dramatisch verlaufenen Reise gibt der Autor außerdem die erste Beschreibung des Kaffees und eines Kaffeehauses: "Under andern habens ein gut getränck / welliches sie hoch halten / Chaube von jnen genennet / das ist gar nahe wie Dinten so schwartz / vnnd in gebresten / sonderlich des Magens / gar dienstlich. Basel: Sebastian Henripetri, 1583. Two volumes bound in one. [20],ccxliii,[24],ccxlv-dcii,[2]; [12],cccvi,[2]pp., plus folding table. Titlepages printed in red and black. Folio. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, yapp edges. Rubbed, front hinge neatly repaired. Marginal tear in folding table. Internally clean. Old bookseller's label and later ownership signature on front pastedown. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. Second edition, after the first of 1579, translated from Benzoni's HISTORIA DEL MONDO NUOVO, published in Venice in 1565. Benzoni's history of the New World was one of the most widely disseminated texts of its day. Having traveled to America himself in 1541, Benzoni was familiar with the Antilles, Guatemala, and the west coast of South America. Engaged in commerce, he quickly grew to hate the Spanish and their administration, and he treats them unfavorably in his text. "[The work] contains interesting details about the countries he visited, but abounds in errors and often in intentional misstatements. What Benzoni states about the Antilles is a clumsy rehash of Las Casas. His reports on the conquests of Mexico and Peru bristle with errors" - CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA. Despite his inaccuracies, the wide distribution of his book made Benzoni an influential figure in describing the New World to Europe. It was undoubtedly chosen by De Bry in 1595 for publication because it matched his own virulently anti-Spanish view, promoting the "Black Legend" of Spanish cruelty and duplicity in conquering the New World. Seine astronomischen Werke fanden weite Verbreitung (s. R. Herrlinger in NDB 4, S. 142/143). Johannes Stöffler (1452 – 1532) lehrte seit 1511 in Tübingen Mathematik und Astronomie; vorher hatte er eine Pfarrstelle innegehabt. SCAPULA (Joannes);
Apud Guillielmum Leimarium, Genev?, 1583. Bel exemplaire. Adams, 610 (pour l'?dition originale).

(The corners of the bottom side of the binding are slightly worn, both the text block and the engravings are in good condition and the whole is printed on heavy paper. Drake, Francis]
[London: Jodocus Hondius, 1583. Engraved portrait, 15 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches. A fine, black impression, expertly laid down on a larger sheet. Slight wear to upper edge. Very good and handsomely presented. Matted. This handsome and striking print is generally considered the finest contemporary portrait of Sir Francis Drake. It has been attributed as the work of the engraver, Hondius, since the 18th century, although Kraus and others suggest it might be the work of Remigius Hogenberg. Only two copies are known of the first state of the print. This is a copy of the second state, probably printed by George Vertue in the 18th century, from the original copper plate, which he altered by adding additional shading to the background. Drake is shown standing, holding a baton in one hand and a helmet in the other. He looks the viewer squarely in the eye. The mole on his nose and short-cropped hair testify to the trueness of the unidealized portrait. Behind him, by a window, hangs a globe. The caption below the portrait makes reference to the circumnavigation. The image forcefully conveys the appearance and personality of the man. A cornerstone for any Drake collection. Kraus used this portrait as the frontispiece for his book on Drake. KRAUS, DRAKE 55 (and frontispiece). Hind, ENGRAVING IN ENGLAND, p.159.
