Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
1583. Bulino, circa 1583, firmato in lastra in basso. Engraving, 1583 circa, signed on lower plate. After a drawing by Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradano. Example in the second state, with some writings added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to platemark and laid on collector's paper, in excellent condition. Goltzius engraved three different portraits of the Flemish artist; this plate is the oldest and derives from a drawing of Stradano with whom Goltzius had business relations. The three women in the decorative frame depict the allegories of architecture, painting and drawing. Beautiful example of a striking portrait. Drusius Johannes
Louis Elzevier, 1583. I: In - 8° (mm 158x102). Pagine 126, [2]. II: In - 8°. Pagine 72.

Leonhart Reinmichel für Georg Willers, Laugingen (d. i. Lauingen), 1583. 8 Blatt, 487 S., 27 Blatt, 1 unbedrucktes Blatt. Benzoni, Girolamo
Basel: Sebastian Henripetri, 1583. Two volumes bound in one. [20],ccxliii,[24],ccxlv-dcii,[2]; [12],cccvi,[2]pp., plus folding table. Titlepages printed in red and black. Folio. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, yapp edges. Rubbed, front hinge neatly repaired. Marginal tear in folding table. Internally clean. Old bookseller's label and later ownership signature on front pastedown. Very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. Second edition, after the first of 1579, translated from Benzoni's HISTORIA DEL MONDO NUOVO, published in Venice in 1565. Benzoni's history of the New World was one of the most widely disseminated texts of its day. Having traveled to America himself in 1541, Benzoni was familiar with the Antilles, Guatemala, and the west coast of South America. Engaged in commerce, he quickly grew to hate the Spanish and their administration, and he treats them unfavorably in his text. "[The work] contains interesting details about the countries he visited, but abounds in errors and often in intentional misstatements. What Benzoni states about the Antilles is a clumsy rehash of Las Casas. His reports on the conquests of Mexico and Peru bristle with errors" - CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA. Despite his inaccuracies, the wide distribution of his book made Benzoni an influential figure in describing the New World to Europe. It was undoubtedly chosen by De Bry in 1595 for publication because it matched his own virulently anti-Spanish view, promoting the "Black Legend" of Spanish cruelty and duplicity in conquering the New World. A version of the text oc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dodoens, Rembert.
Antuerpiae: Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1583. Folio (36 cm; 14"). [10] ff., 860 pp., [13] ff., illus. Written and printed during the second decade of the Dutch Golden Age (1570–1670), this => first edition of Dodoens' Stirpium historiae pemptades sex is coveted today by collectors of printing for the excellent typography of the Plantin Press, by collectors of early illustration for van der Borcht's detailed woodcuts, and by collectors and scholars of natural history for the important contributions to botany that the author incorporates. Hunt says of this that it is the "First edition of Dodoens' last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the Cruydeboeck"; it was the basis for Gerard's famous English herbal. Rembert Dodoens (1517–85), a Flemish physician and botanist, was fully immersed in the Renaissance method of pursuing knowledge, whether derived from ancient texts or from new discoveries and personal observation, or combining the best elements of both streams. That is what he did with his Cruydeboeck and with Stirpium historiae pemptades sex. Coming as it does during the first hundred years after the discovery of the New World and concomitant knowledge of New World plants, the Pemptades illustrates and discusses such new discoveries as maize, tobacco, mechoacan, and nopal. The => 1298 woodcut illustrations here were commissioned by Plantin from the Flemish artist Pieter van der Borcht (1545–1608), a pupil of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. SCAPULA (Joannes);
