Caracci Agostino; Caliari Paolo
Incisione all'acquaforte e bulino di mm 355 x 505 su carta di filo. Filigrana cerchio. Secondo stato su due. In basso a sinistra "Paulli Caliarij Veronensis opus in ecclesia D. Caterinae Venetijs", alla stessa altezza più a destra "Giacomo Franco Forma" ed ancora più a destra "Aug. Car. fe. 1582". Anonimo
Acquaforte e bulino, 1582, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Dimensioni 248x340. Etching and engraving, 1582, signed and dated on lower plate. Magnificent example of a very rare work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "sun in the circle with cross" watermark, trimmed to the platemark, in perfect condition. This work is very likely a devotional subject, dedicated to the Madonna of Itria … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Petrarca (1304 - 1374) was an Aretine scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy, and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". Lodovico Castelvetro (ca. 1505 - 1571) was an important figure in the development of neo-classicism, especially in drama. It was his reading of Aristotle that led to a widespread adoption of a tight version of the Three Unities, as a dramatic standard. [Click Below for Full Description]

1582. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Thought be written concurrently with Tasso's 'Jerusalem Delivered,' Curtio Gonzaga's 'Il fido amante' is an heroic poem consisting of 36 songs and passages. This work celebrates the life of the Gonzaga family, outlining celebrations and accomplishments, along with his battles of the supernatural and occult magic. The protagonist, thought to be Gonzaga himself, suffers from the slavery of love and follows blindly as the title suggests - the faithful lover. An exceedingly rare first edition printing of Gonzaga's famed collection of poetry known to be one of the favorites in Tasso's library. [Attributes: First Edition]

Holy Bible
1582. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In 1566, French theologian Rene Benoit printed a French translation of Jerome's Latin Bible. Benoit was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Troyes; however, his Bible was highly criticized for being too Calvinistic in his interpretation. However, this accusation may have been warranted. Benoit was a close friend of Henry IV, a notable Protestant royal. According to Chambers, this 1582 French edition was shared by a number of printers including Crevel, Lescuyer, Mallard and Pavie, all of which were publishing in Rouen. It should be noted that the Crevel edition is the only printing not included in the USTC. [Attributes: First Edition]

De Backer & Sommervogel VIII, col. 240; Cordier, Sinica, col. 810; Löwendahl 58; Lust 839; cf. Hanotiau 14 (2nd French edition). The first French edition of "the most influential description of China to appear during the first half of the 17th century" (Hanotiau). Ricci, an Italian Jesuit missionary, arrived in China in 1582. Adopting Chinese dress and learning the language, he succeeded where other missionaries had failed. He served in Nanchang, Nanking, and received permission to establish a missionary post in Beijing in 1610. During these years, he kept a journal which presented the history of Jesuit mission in China from its beginning in 1582 to 1610, the year of his death. This manuscript was translated from the Italian into Latin by Ricci's successor Trigault, who tried to elicit support for the mission in China. Trigault, however, changed many passages of Ricci's journal and augmented it with information based on several Portuguese reports. "The resulting volume contains not only a history of the Jesuit mission but also includes a wealth of information about China in the chapters describing Chinese geography, people, laws, government, religion, learning, commerce and the like" (Hanotiau). Binding rubbed; folding plan with clean tear and slightly wrinkled; some occasional staining. Good copy.

LOPES DE CASTANHEDA, Fernão
London: Thomas East, 1582. Small quarto, printed in black letter with woodcut initials; a few contemporary marginal notes; nineteenth-century calf, very well rebacked. The first English edition of one of the most important works of the first great age of discovery, a rare and important source for the history of Portuguese expansion in the East. This first book of Castanheda's work, originally published in Coimbra in 1551, was translated by Nicholas Lichefield and, most appropriately, dedicated to Sir Francis Drake. Only this first book was published in English; as the Hill catalogue notes, 'the English edition is very rare'. Most of Castanheda's great book is devoted to the Portuguese thrust into Asia in the early 16th century, chronicling their epic expansion into India, the East Indies, and China between 1497 and 1525. Castanheda himself spent some two decades in the Portuguese colonies in the East, and so was well equipped to write this account. It is one of the primary sources for the early Portuguese trading empire, a model that the British were beginning to emulate at the time of publication. Penrose describes the book as 'an impartial book of outspoken sincerity which was the fruit of years of residence in the East.''In translating this history of Portuguese eastern imperialism to 1525, Nicholas Lichefield gave to English readers the accounts of Diaz, Covilhan, Da Gama, Cabral, the cousins Albuquerque, Pacheco and other Portuguese pioneers of eastern exploration, trade and conquest. In these narratives he set forth the navigations, battles, difficulties, and triumph … [Click Below for Full Description]

PETRARCA Francesco

Tiny Bible, 1582, Testamenti Novi Editio Vulgata (New Testament, Latin Vulgate) Incredibly Rare Pocket Bible - according to OCLA WorldCat there are NO copies in the U.S. and 3 copies in Germany, with no the copies worldwide except a few electronic reprints. I've never seen this Bible on sale in Ebay over the past 15 years. Tiny size and one of the smallest Bibles printed in the 16th-century - 11.5 x 8 cm - 5 cm thick (4.5 x 3.14 x 2 inches thick). 50 large woodcut illustration Publisher: Lugduni [Lyons, France] by de Harsy. LVGDVNI, Apud Antonium de Harsy, M.D.LXXII. 464 pages, 339 pages, plus 12 leaves. Complete with all text and index. Missing final leaf with a further colophon. Very early vellum cover with lovely patina. The leaves with obvious signs of wear - the last few leaves with very small marginal defect. A few running headlines and marginal glosses are shaved. All in all, a very solid and attractive copy of a very rare tiny pocket Bible - one ready for immediate display in a museum, art collection, or library. As avid collectors realize, most of these little Bibles were used so heavily that they did not survive. Most Bible collectors do not have this Bible or a Bible of similar size in their collections.
