With explanatory title (Sluys) at the top of the plate and written in a cartouche in the bottom right corner: 'SLVSA teutonicae Flan:driae opp: admodum elegans'. The painted crests overflowed into each other in the folding of the print. This print originates from 'Lodovico Guicciardini, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi bassi (...), Antwerpen, Plantijn, 1582'. This was an influential account of the history and the arts of the Low Countries, accompanied by city maps by various leading engravers. Deys 2001.

Noonan, The road to Jerusalem: pilgrimage and travel in the age of discovery (2007), pp. 158-160. Rare eighth(?) edition of the Dutch translation of a work on Biblical travels, written by the German Protestant pastor and theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), first published in German in 1581 and translated by Matthias Hasaert (1578?-1663). The work proved extremely popular and appeared in almost 80 editions up to the 18th century. "However much a work of the study, this book could be easily taken and read as a travel book. Bünting, although he had never actually visited Palestine, produced an original work by recasting Sacred Scripture into a Reissbuch" (Noonan). The work is divided into four parts. The first deals with the travels from the Old Testament, starting with a description and a woodcut plan of Jerusalem. Two other woodcut folding plates show the Temple of Solomon and the route the Jews took from Egypt to the Holy Land. The second part explains the Biblical currencies and units of measurement. The third part resembles the first, but deals with the journeys from the New Testament. The work closes with a short theological treatise on the four Evangelists. With an owner's inscription on flyleaf. Browned throughout, some marginal smudges, some occasional small spots and one plate slightly torn along the fold. Binding somewhat soiled, spine restored. Overall a fair copy.

Balet comique de la Royne, faict aux nopces de Monsieur le Duc de Ioyeuse & madamoyselle de Vaudemont sa soeur

Paris: Adrien Le Roy, Robert Ballard and Mamert Patisson for Jacques Patin, 1582. 4to (231 x 165 mm). Collation: a4 e4, A-T4, including 53 pages of typographical musical notation; 8 full-page etchings of the entertainment and 18 large etchings of pictorial medallions, designed by Jacques Patin, one full-page engraving of the Queen's arms, printers' woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and head-pieces. 18th-century mottled calf, gilt spine; red cloth slipcase. Joints partly split, repairs to spine; the full-page etchings slightly cropped along fore-margin or at bottom, as often. Provenance: Thomas Jolley (1846 owner's inscription on pastedown); Alfred Cortot (1877-1962), Franco-Swiss pianist and conductor (bookplate, small inkstamp on title and several text leaves); Parmenia Ekstrom (1908-1989), ballet historian, author of The Ballerinas: from the Court of Louis XIV to Pavlova, 1972; purchased from Ximenes, 1991. FIRST EDITION. This famous early dramatic fusion of ballet, opera and poetry was commissioned by the Queen Consort of France, Louise de Lorraine (1553-1601), and was performed on 15 October 1581 as part of the festivities celebrating the marriage of her sister, Marguerite de Vaudémont (1564-1625), to Anne, Duc de Joyeuse (1561-1587), King Henri III's favorite. The Italian dancing-master Baltazarini, called Beaujoyeulx, conceived the production, Jacques Patin designed it; La Chesnaye, Salmon and Beaulieu composed the music and poetry. The novelty was manifested in the dancing - the dancers' steps measured and performed in synchronicity with the accompanying music and verse consciously reflecting the rules of Jean-Antoine de Baïf's Académie de Poésie et de Musique. The publisher Patin was also responsible for the lavish illustrations, including a view of the spectators - among them the King and his mother, Catherine de' Medici - and the decorated sets in the hall, without proscenium or separate stage area. The plates further depict the elaborate chariots, most notably the fountain that carried the Queen; sirens, tritons, allegorical figures and other participants in the drama. The gold medallions were presented by the Queen and nymphs of the ballet, all ladies of the court, to the King and noblemen in the audience. Beaujoyeaulx writes of his intentions in the preface: "For, as to the Ballet, even though it may be a modern invention, or at least repeated so far distinct from antiquity that it can be so called, being, in truth only some geometric mixtures of several persons dancing together to a diverse harmony of several instruments, I confess to you that simply represented by [means of visual] impression it would have had much novelty, and little beauty, the recitation of a simple comedy. Also it would have been neither very excellent nor worthy of such a great queen, who wished to do something truly magnificent and triumphant. Because of this I decided it would not be a bad idea to mix one and the other together and to diversify the music with poetry, and most often to merge the two together; for in antiquity they never recited poetry without music, and Orpheus never played without words. I have, however, given first place and honor to the dance, and second place to the substance, which I have called 'comic' more for the beautiful, tranquil and happy conclusion than for the quality of the personages, who are almost all gods and goddesses, or other heroic persons. Thus I have animated and made the Ballet speak, and Comedy sing and resound, and have added many rare and rich scenes and ornaments. I may say that within a single well-proportioned body I have pleased eye, ear, and mind." The mythological subject is Circe's enchantment of Ulysses and his companions and the triumph of the combined gods, representing the French King. It was a coherent choreographic and musical spectacle, staged in the vast Salle Bourbon of the old Louvre palace and lasting from ten in the evening until three the following morning. For analyses of the author's new art form of court ballet, based mainly on this book, see H. Prunières, Le ballet de cour en France avant Benserade et Lully (1914); F.A. Yates, The French Academies of the sixteenth century (1947); M.M. McGowan, L'Art du ballet de cour en France (1963); and Lincoln Kirstein, Four Centuries of Ballet (1984).         Lo sposalizio mistico di Santa Caterina

1582 - Bulino, 1582, firmato e datato in basso a destra. Bellissima prova. Engraving, 1582, signed and dated lower right. From a painting by Paolo Veronese. Example in the first state of two, on the address of publisher James Franco. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to the coperplate, small restoration in the central part perfectly executed, otherwise in excellent condition. The work comes from the painting by Veronese in the Galleries of the Academy, but in 1575 it was located in St. Catherine's Church in Venice. The Carracci faithfully reproduces the original composition, and made perfectly sparkling effects of the painting Caliari. Bartsch said rightly that this is one of the most happy of Augustine. Beautiful proof. De Grazia, Le Stampe dei Carracci, p. 125, 104 I/II; Bartsch 98. Dimensioni 344x505. Dimensioni [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

His best known work, the Book of kisses, was notably imitated by Ronsard and his disciples. This collection consists of nineteen poems, partly imitated from Catullus and Greek anthologies, the theme of the kiss is explored in all its aspects: Dry or wet kisses, chaste or lustful, angry or soothing ... A prolific author, Jean Second produced during its brief existence of numerous writings. The book brings together the elegies of many of his works including that of Kisses. The book contains the best work of Angeriano the Eropaegnon, originally published in Florence in 1512, a book about love. Michel Tarchaniota Marullus died in 1500, probably born in Constantinople and raised in Florence, and was sponsored by Lorenzo de Medici. He wrote hymns and epigrams in imitation of Lucretius, present in this collection. Johannes Secundus is certainly the most important poet of this triad, which had an influence on Renaissance writers, but also poets until the end of the eighteenth century.

      A. Muschio, for A. San Vito at Naples, Venice 1582 - Small quarto, with five folding engraved maps; some interesting early ink marginalia, contemporary flexible vellum, manuscript spine label. Best edition of this important sixteenth-century summary of geographical knowledge, containing for the first time the suite of engraved maps. First published in Naples in 1573, this is one of two subsequent editions of the book printed in Venice for distribution in Naples and the first to include the fine double hemisphere world map, and a double-page map for each of the four sections that divide the book: Asia, Africa, Europe and America. The world map is based on Ruscelli's, the first double hemisphere world map to appear in an Atlas, and this is its last appearance before it would be revised to show a south land.On the other hand both the Asia and the America maps included here (also based on those used by Ruscelli for his edition of Ptolemy) show significant parts of a southern continent: in the Asia map Nova Guinea is shown at the south-east with below it, separated by a narrow strait, a section of a southern land 'Terre incognitae Australia pars'. To the left are Java major and Java minor, Bataban, Terralia and Timor. In the America map the large 'southern continent' land mass to the south-west is captioned 'Nova Guinea Andrea Corsalus Florent: videtur eam sub nomine Terrae Piccinnacoli designare': the reference is to Andrea Corsali's letter first published in 1516 in which he recorded (in Eden's 1555 translation) 'navigating towards the east, they say there lies the land of Piccinacoli, and many believe that this land is connected towards the east in the south with the coast of Bresil or Verzino, because, on account of the size of this land of Verzino, it is not as yet on all sides discovered'.Lach discusses Anania's work at some length, and emphasises its importance for its lengthy treatment of Asia; he describes the four treatises which comprise the work as 'far more sophisticated and integrated views of the overseas world than contemporaries could obtain from the brief references in the annalistic histories. Each treatise deals with the contemporary state of knowledge on each of the four geographical regions into which he divides the world?'. A few leaves slightly embrowned, a few stains; early ink ownership inscriptions on title (one crossed out causing tear), ink stamp erased from title; endpapers renewed but overall a good copy.

The New Testament of Jesus Christ, Translated Faithfully Into English, out of the authentical Latin… With Arguments of bookes and chapters, Annotations, and other necessarie helpes… for cleering the Controversies in religion, of these daies… Rhemes: John Fogny, 1582. Small quarto, late 19th-century full brown morocco, elaborately blind-tooled spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. [30] 745 [27]. $29,000.Very scarce first edition of the important Rheims New Testament, the first Roman Catholic version in English, translated from the Vulgate. The copy of noted biblical scholar and pastor John Eadie.Like the Geneva Bible, the Rheims New Testament was ""produced by religious refugees who carried their faith and work abroad. Since the English Protestants used their vernacular translations, not only as the foundation of their own faith but as siege artillery in the assault on Rome, a Catholic translation became more and more necessary in order that the faithful could answer, text for text, against the 'intolerable ignorance and importunity of the heretics of this time.' The chief translator was Gregory Martin… Technical words were transliterated rather than translated. Thus many new words came to birth… Not only was [Martin] steeped in the Vulgate, he was, every day, involved in the immortal liturgical Latin of his church. The resulting Latinisms added a majesty to his English prose, and many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of the King James's Version, and thus passed into the language"" (Great Books and Book Collectors 108). While Martin was responsible for the translation, the controversial textual annotations in defense of Catholic doctrine are attributed to Richard Bristow, one of the supervisors of the project; most copies of this edition were purportedly suppressed and destroyed because of these notes (some of which were removed from later editions). The New Testament was issued separately and first, in the hope that its successful sale would finance prompt production of the Old Testament; the two-volume Old Testament did not, however, appear until 1609-10. With ornamental woodcut title border, historiated initials, and head- and tailpieces. Without leaf Qqqqi only (pages 673-4, the final leaf of 2 Peter). The Bible 100 Landmarks 65.
