1580. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr Homère, Homeri Ilias, postrema editio. Cui originem & exitum belli Trojani addidimus, Coluthi Helenæ raptum: et Tryphiodori Ilij excidium. Latine omnia ad verbum exposita. Et a F. Porto Cretensi inumeris in locis emendata. [Genève], αφπʹ [Eustache Vignon], 1580. In-16, 921-[22]-79p.

Abraham ORTELIUS (1527 - 1598)
[Antwerp, early s-1584], 1580. Copper engraved map sheet with full contemporary colour and silver highlights, with no text on verso, recently remounted upon a larger sheet of paper with added French lines in gilt and blue (Very Good, excellent original colour, map trimmed to neatline as it was once bound in a contemporary atlas factice), map proper: 37,5 x 48,5 cm (19 x 14,7 inches). A detailed, original coloured separately issued map of Diecese Liege was made by Abraham Ortelius. It corresponds the first state of the plate, which was replaced in 1595. This example was published separately without text on the back and bound in an atlas factice. It was originally coloured with a magnificent late 16th full hand colour, close to the frescoes of the Gallery of Maps in Vatican, which were made between 1580-1583. Such colouring, which is more typical for the murals, and is seldom seen on works of paper. It is amongst the most decorative 16th century colouring we have encountered. Abraham Ortelius (1527-98) is widely hailed as the ‘The Father of Modern Cartography,’ being the compiler of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (meaning ‘Theatre of the World’), first issued in Antwerp in 1570. Ortelius was a shrewd businessman who went to great lengths to obtain the finest possible source maps and to engrave works of great artistic beauty and intellectual merit. He was the earliest map mogul, as his publishing concern was the first cartographic enterprise to become a great international commercial empire. Ortelius’s maps were the most popular and widely recognized of hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANSUS Victorinus
1580-1579). 4to (220 x 150mm.) [16], 195, [1]p., title within a woodcut frame, woodcut initials large and small, contemporary limp vellum, a little marginal browning, lacking ties Florence: ex bibliotheca Sermartelliana, 1580 (ex off. Sermartelliana, 1579) Rare first edition with an interesting contemporary provenance. The work is a commentary on Ecclesiastes, called in Hebrew Qoheleth, one of the Wisdom Books of the OT, and much read in the sixteenth century. The work is commented on sentence by sentence, the lemmata being printed in italic type and the commentary in Roman. See Christianson, E. Ecclesiastes through the Centuries, Oxford: Blackwell, 2007. The author was a Benedictine from Aversa near Naples (hence Victorinus ab Aversa in the title) where he died in 1611. The title to this work describes him as provost of an abbey at Florence where the book was published, but later (1588-92) he was abbot of La Trinità della Cava dei Tirreni, near Salerno. Subsequently abbot of S. Severino at Naples, where his Harmonia theologica 1593 was published, he became in 1599 Bishop of Castellammare, and in 1603 of Ariano. In 1608 in Rome was published an extract from this work De ecclesiasticis magistratibus. In 1595 (and again in 1605) in Venice was published his Praeclara institutio modi procedendi in causis regularium, revised (according to the title) by Timotheus, a monk of S. Severino. The dedication to cardinal Antonio Carafa (1538-91) relates how cardinal Hosius (Stanislaw Hozjusz 1505-79) whilst staying at Subiaco for the summer, was instrumental in urging Manso to publish th … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRANMER, Thomas
London: Iohn Daye, 1580. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Thomas Cranmer was a 16th-century English reform leader known for his reign as Archbishop of Canterbury. Like many Protestant reformers, Cranmer's views were met with disdain and attacks from Catholic opposition, most notably that of Stephen Gardiner. Gardiner was the leading antagonist of the Protestant reforms in the mid-16th-century, publishing works that denounced Cranmer's books. Beginning in 1550, Cranmer published a 'Defense' of the Eucharist doctrine. Gardiner responded with 'An Explication and Assertion of the True Catholic Faith' a year later, and, of course Cranmer published his 'Answer' immediately after 'An Explication' was published. (McDiarmid). 'An Answer' includes texts from both his 'Defense' as well as Gardiner's 'Explication'. This impressive 16th-century book was published by John Daye, who, notably, also published John Foxe's 'Acts and Monuments' or 'Book of Martyrs'. In it, Cranmer's story was told, and two iconic engravings of Cranmer's martyrdom were included. These two illustrations also appear in this 1580 printing of 'An Answer'.

"Etching with engraving, circa 1580, without printing details. After Bartolomeo Spranger.
Foglio molto raro. Engraving, circa 1580, signed at lower center. After Federico Zuccari. A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, good conditions. The scene is shot, albeit with some modifications, by the Flagellation that Federico Zuccari painted in Rome in 1575 for the Oratory of Gonfalone. Gaspar Oselli also known as Gaspar ab avibus, is an engraver native of Citadella, who liked to call himself by the name of Padovano. [Genève], αφπʹ [Eustache Vignon], 1580. In-16, 921-[22]-79p. "Before that date printers visiting the fair must have had to write out by hand countless lists of new books to send to their customers: thereafter they could send copies of the fair catalogue to the local booksellers all over Europe, who in turn passed them on to their customers. The fair catalogue was a co-operative effort: the printers coming to the fair sent in advance title-pages of the books they were bringing, so that Willer could arrange them in subject order before printing his catalogue " (Pollard/Ehrman). "(These) catalogues represent the first international bibliographies of a periodic character, attempting to list every six months all new publications issued in Europe, and they can be considered the prototype of today's Books in Print. The books are arranged by subject; for the first time, place, publisher, and date are always mentioned" (Breslauer/Folter). – Breitrandig.
Ottimo esemplare, in perfette condizioni. Bibliografia: F. Borroni Salvadori, Carte, piante e stampe storiche delle raccolte Lafreriane della Biblioteca nazionale di Firenze (1980) p. xliv; G. Boffito , A. Mori, Piante e vedute di Firenze (1926) p. 39, [41], and 53; Bella, Cartografia rara ... dalla collezione Franco Novacco (1986) p. 56, no. 48. Cf. Tooley 206; Novacco 4F 219." Rare engraved birds-eye view of Florence, set against the surrounding hill. The view includes the coat of arms of the Medici and Florence in the upper corners, with key to the major buildings in the city. One of the earliest Italian engraved views of Florence. The earliest view is an unique woodcut, 1496-90, now in the Kupferstich Kabinet, Berlin. Both R.V. Tooley and Marcel Destombes, the author of a checklist of maps in the Bibliotheque National in Paris, mistook 'Mugnone f.' identifying the river which flowed past the northern walls of the city, to be the name of the engraver. A fine impression, with nice wide margins. [Click Below for Full Description]
