Very interesting sheet of Du Perac, I vestigi delle antichita di Roma, that for the first time has been published in 1575 and later has been reprised serveraly. The viewer is situated at the place of the panel where the Lapis Niger is exposed. The triumphal arch of the Septimus Severus is still sticking in rubbish, but the old Curia Julia is obtained. Diagonal grid pattern of a pencil, possibly from a copier.

Ockland, Christopher
London: Apud Radulphum Nuberie, ex assignatione Henrici Bynneman Typographi, 1582, 1580. The 1580 publication of Ockland's 'Anglorum Prælia,' a Latin historical poem, brought Ockland into public notice, as the book was appointed by Queen Elizabeth and her privy council to be received and taught in every grammar and free school within the kingdom. The work is an hexameter poem, the meter used in classical poetry for heroic subjects. An early hand records on the flyleaf: "containing the highest Panegyric on Queen Elizabeth's character and Government. Was enjoined by Authority to be taught as a classic author in Grammar School. This was a matchless contrivance to imprint a sense of loyalty on the minds of the people." The DNB adds that the the teaching of Ockland was intended "for the removing of such lascivious poets as are commonly reade and taught in the saide grammer schools."The second edition of Ockland's work, printed two years after the first, contains Ockland's EIPHNAPXIA, Alexander Neville's Latin poem on Lett's rebellion, and the poem on Elizabeth.

Bustillo, Sebastian; Maldonado, Pedro
Saquizaguana, c1580. Signed by an Oidor of Lima´s highest Court of Law in the 16th century; a conflict involving natives. 25 May, c1580. Saquizaguana (Peru). In folio (310 mm x 214 mm). 1 ff. Custom made recent half calf over marbled paper, front cover lettered in gilt, virtually perfect. Folds, carefully flattened, a few holes, very good. Fascinating 16th century South American manuscript, ordering a provision of Indians for work; mentions the rigorous task they were submitted to. As often, the illiterateracy and complicated writing, make the document hard to read, but fortunately two (of the three) signatures could be recognized. Pedro de la Gasca was President of the Real Audiencia de Lima; under his short but efficient government, Maldonado became -along with Cianca, Bravo de Saravia and Santillan- an Oidor of the new Audiencia (colonial court houses) of Lima.

Braun, Georg and Hogenberg, Frans:
Cologne, c. 1580. Map. Copper engraving, platemark 33.5 x 45.5 cms, fine original hand-colour, German text on verso. The Civitates Orbis Terrarum - Cities of the whole World - was one of the best-selling works of the late sixteenth-century. It was a monumental work completed over 45 years between 1572 and 1617. It was the first systematic city atlas (containing the first printed views of many towns). Braun wrote the text and Ortelius - who travelled with the artist Joris Hoefnagel - supplied much of the material, which was then engraved by Novellus and Hogenburg. There were a number of editions, mostly with Latin text, but it is extremely difficult (and as Koeman says ‘of secondary importance’) to differentiate between them, as the state of the plates and their number and order does not vary. One of the remarkable things about the Civitates is that the town views and plans were taken from eye-witness observation rather than improvised in the manner of earlier geographical works - one thinks of the many spurious 'views' in the famous Nuremberg Chronicles for example - and the little group walking down the steep path in the foreground is often taken to be a form of self portrait, showing Hoefnagel and Ortelius themselves, whose visit to Tivoli in 1578 is recored in the legend, bottom left. The inset shows the impressive waterfall just outside the town.

Rastell, John (c. 1475-1536) (ed.)
London: ¶ Londini in ædibus Richardi Tottelli. [Richard Tottell] Anno Domini. 1580. [colophon:] [fleuron] Imprinted at London in Fletestrete within Temple Barre, at the signe of the Hand and Starre, by Rychard Tottel, the xvi. day of March. ¶ Anno domini a verbo nato. 1580., 1580. Book. Very Good. Leather. 3rd Edition. Description: Sm. folio (11 × 8 in): [46], cccxxvi l. Early calf. · Register: 2º: ^[pi]A^4 A-H^4 ¶^4 ¶¶^6 ²A-4L^4 4M^6 (in this copy, the gatherings signed '¶' and '¶¶' are bound after the preliminary matter). · Condition: Rebacked, front joint cracked, cords secure. Numerous early marginal annotations. · Comments: First printed around 1514 from a manuscript now lost, the book of assizes is unique among the year books for reporting cases on circuit in the country, rather than those argued at the bar in Westminster. In addition to reprinting Rastell's preface to the first edition, this edition includes several tables and a table showing the assize circuits and justices for 23 Eliz. (1581), doubtless because Rastell's edition contained a similar table for 5 H.8 (1514). An inscription on the title-page shows the date of purchase (28 September Aº Eliz. 23, i.e. 1580.) and the price paid. There are manuscript notes in an early hand on nearly every page, many of them extensive. · References: Devereux, A Bibliography of John Rastell 88-90; Beale R51; ESTC S121396; STC 9601..

The very rare editio princeps of Plotinus' hugely influential "Enneads", the sum up of the foundation of Neoplatonism, being the first printing of the original Greek text of the "Enneads", accompanied by Ficino's Latin translation. During the Renaissance a profound interest in the teachings of Neoplatonism emerged, centered and focusing on Plotinus and his "Enneads". Neoplatonism came to hugely influence Renaissance philosophy, science, humanism, and theology, and much Renaissance thought stemmed directly from the reading of Plotinus, making the editio princeps of this text one of the foundational works for the development of modern thought.
