MEL, Rinaldo del ca. 1554-ca. 1598
. Large octavo (ca. 240 x 179 mm.). Sewn into early grey wrappers with manuscript titling to upper: "Primus Chorus Tenor Missa binae Tenor Primi Chori a 8." 14 pp. including one ruled page without notation. Notated ink on hand-ruled staves. This work is unrecorded in both Grove and RISM.. Mel, a Flemish composer, was "mainly active in Italy. He was of a landed family whose fortunes were closely linked to the Duchy of Lorraine... After Spain annexed Portugal in 1580 Mel went to Rome, where his name appears in that year on a subscription list for two new bells for the Flemish church, S Maria in Campo Santo. Whether or not he studied composition with Palestrina as Baini claimed, his first published works indicate that he was well acquainted with Palestrina's style. The title- pages and dedications of his printed books show that in addition to his continued allegiance to Lorraine... He enjoyed the friendship and patronage of the Valignani, the Henrici and Cardinal Gabriel Paleotto... Mel was well educated and a prolific composer whose aristocratic lineage and connections seem to have ensured him at least a modest fame. His works have not been edited, and have therefore not received the study they deserve. His sacred pieces show him to have been a craftsman, well trained in Dutch counterpoint and a diligent imitator of the Palestrinian style." Patricia Ann Myers in Grove online

BRAUN, G.
. Andachtsbild. Kupferstich, um 1580., nach Tizian. 45,2 x 34,1 cm (Darstellung ) / 45,7 x 34,4 cm (Blatt). Am unteren Rand Verlegeradresse "Donati Rasicoti form." Rechts unten in der Ecke Sammlerstempel des sächsischen Königs Friedrich August II. (Lugt 972). Auf dem Trägerkarton Sammlerstempel Heinz Thuß. Wasserzeichen Fleur-de-Lys. - Ausgezeichnetes schönes Blatt. Etwas späterer Abzug des 17. Jahrhunderts. Wird bei Abraham Hume (Notices of the life and works of Titian, London 1829, S. XXV) erwähnt. [Click Below for Full Description]

Mair, Paul Hector [not named here] illustrated by Jost Amman, FM and Christoph Weiditz
Sigmund Feyrabend Buchhandler, Franckfort am Mayn (ie Frankfurt), 1580. Large scene of knight in armour on titlepage + full-page allegorical plate of three graces and flying Mercury signed I A [Jost Amman] & MF +156 full-page woodcuts of men in armour with their shield coats of arms. Folio in morocco spined boards (tips bit worn). Title in red & black + 2pp (preface and intro) + captioned full page plate as half title (numbered p3) +4-162pp +[2]pp (colophon with large printer's emblem and blank verso), but seems to lack a final blank leaf. At page 55 is a full-page half title with over 30 figures while at page 103 and 145 are divisional titles with large decorative tailpieces. This divides the men in armour into 4 parts and the last plate in each section has a monogram CW for Christoph Weiditz. Generally a very clean crisp copy, except for light browning of titlepage, final blank and a few other leaves, small brown marks on last page not affecting colophon, and light marks of former damp in top margin of a few pages. An early owner has written some 20 of the familial names in neat script above the ornate gothic printed names. The pages have good margins and strong impressions of these fine plates. Examples of the many famous families depicted are members of the Fugger, Pfister, Sattelin, Vogelin, Ravenspurger families. Coat of arms bookplate of Fr. Franc. Paul de Smitmer dated 1770 to pastedown + a later small name Gzell and partial date to flyleaf (see Fairfax Murray 49, Brunet I,235). *All 156 full-page woodcuts by CW (Christoph Weiditz 1498-1559) appeared in the earlier … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very interesting sheet of Du Perac, I vestigi delle antichita di Roma, that for the first time has been published in 1575 and later has been reprised serveraly. The viewer is situated at the place of the panel where the Lapis Niger is exposed. The triumphal arch of the Septimus Severus is still sticking in rubbish, but the old Curia Julia is obtained. Diagonal grid pattern of a pencil, possibly from a copier.
