Paris: Chez Guillaume Chaudiere, 1580. 2 volumes in one, quarto. (8 3/8 x 6 5/8 inches). Titles with woodcut device, woodcut headpieces and initials. [10], 292, [xviii]; [iv], 72 ff. Contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, manuscript titling on spineProvenance: Artus de Prunier, Comte de Clermont, la Seigneurie de Virieu en Dauphine (period inscriptions and signature); Nicolas de Prunier (armorial bookplate)Very rare first edition in French of a noted early history of Cyprus and account of the Ottoman Empire conquest of 1571.This work is sometimes mistaken to be simply a French translation of the Italian 1572 work by Lusignano titled Chorograffia: et breve historia universale dell'Isola de Cipro, though is in fact here considerably augmented and corrected. Though published following that work, it was begun earlier in the convent of the Jacobins at Paris on 9 May and completed on 22 November 1568. Furthermore, this work includes a translation of Calepio's account of the Turkish conquest of Cyprus. It is believed that Lusignano, a descendant of the famed Cypriot family of that name, was hopeful that his work would induce the French to drive the Turks from Cyprus, and restore the island to his compatriots. Rare: we know of only two other copies of the first work in commerce in recent years (Sotheby's London, 13 May 2004, £18,000; Christie's Paris, 2 June 2005, €7800). This copy with important provenance. Artus Prunier de Saint-André and his family owned an important library which was started by Artus I and was completed by his grand-son, Nicolas (1628-1692 … [Click Below for Full Description]

EGENOLFF, Christian
Frankfurt, 1580. Oblong booklet of 44 illustrated leaves measuring 204 x 183 mm., many being woodcut patterns with printed pedagogic captions in several languages (namely Latin, German, English and French); some loss (principally marginal) affecting approximately half the leaves, the whole book repaired and laid down in the eighteenth century; old vellum, worn and stained, recently rebacked by a competent binder. English schoolboys of the seventeenth-century. Intriguing and original natural history pattern book, being a composite of leaves from several early publications of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with very early handcolouring and a smattering of irreverent manuscript notations. This book of original hand painted woodcuts presents birds, beasts, insects and flowers compiled for use as an educational aid during the seventeenth-centur. It has several bold ownership inscriptions on the vellum covers including "William Park Anno. Dom 1660" and "Philip Pease his booke 1669". The hand colouring is charming and original and the book was clearly repaired during the eighteenth century, and during this process the plates were laid down. Much used by many hands, the inside of the vellum covers have been used by students to practise the spelling of difficult words including "Plantaganett". Other manuscript notations appear throughout the book, from mundane details such as "Ms. Wards over against the blew bord in German Street in St. James Fields" to more flamboyant statements (one plate of grubs is inscribed in a concise seventeenth century hand "You must not call thoes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lavater, Ludwig
Eustache Vignon, Geneva, 1580. [16],213 pp. In Latin. 19th-century plain paper-backed marbled boards. 19th-century German booksellers label in front pastedown. Small early inscription, crossed out in early ink, in title page, not affecting text, occasional early underlining and marginal notes. Two-inch vertical crease at head of title leaf, with half-inch closed tear at edge (tear not affecting text), faint dampstaining in first 24 leaves. Very good. Early Latin edition, after the first edition, in German, of 1569 and the first Latin edition of 1570. Known in English as "Of Ghostes and Spirites Walking by Nyght, and of Strange Noyses, Crackes, and Sundry Forewarnings, Whiche Commonly Happen Before the Death of Menne, Great Slaughters, & Alterations of Kyngdomes," from the 1572 English translation, this book is one of the most important demonological works of the Reformation era and was profoundly influential in Elizabethan literature. The author, Ludwig Lavater (1527-1886), was a Swiss Zwinglian minister and theologian based in Zurich. In the 16th and 17th-century Protestant world, new questions surfaced regarding the nature of ghostly apparitions—particularly their origins. In the Catholic understanding, ghosts were generally thought to be spirits of the dead on leave from Purgatory. With their rejection of the doctrine of Purgatory, Protestant philosophers and theologians were compelled to search for new answers. One (fairly unpopular) position was taken by Reginald Scot in his DISCOURSE UPON DEVILS AND SPIRITS, appended to his 1584 work, DISCOVERIE OF WITCHCRAFT, in whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

VOLUME TERZO: CARTE 40 CARTE GEOGRAFICHE IN COFANETTO; INDICI TOPONOMASTICI. HUGO, Herman.
De Backer & Sommervogel IV, col. 513; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) III, Bolswert 145-192; Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 345; Porteman, Emblematic exhibitions, p. 17, fig. 6; Praz, pp. 143 ff.; STCV 6826501 (4 copies). First edition, in the original Latin, of the most popular spiritual love emblem book ever published, illustrated with the beautiful emblematic designs of the great baroque artist Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert (ca. 1580-1633). Herman Hugo (1588-1629), a Jesuit priest who lived in Antwerp and elsewhere in the southern Low Countries, made the genre popular throughout Europe with his Pia desideria and especially its beautiful emblems by Van Bolswert. Its emblems, mixing heart-warming scenes of tenderness with dire warnings to sinners, even inspired the Protestant Jan Luyken's Jesus en de Ziel. Though the use of the Latin language would have demanded a fairly well-educated reader, it was still the language of the Catholic Church and the book clearly spoke to the common people. For this reason, the emblems depict people (often represented by putti) in daily life. With early owner's inscriptions on title-page mostly erased and a 17th-century interlinear inscription between the first lines of the dedication, and a 20th-century bookplate of Jos van der Steen. With a small rust hole in 1 leaf and an occasional, usually marginal brown stain, but still in very good condition. A seminal emblematic work mixing heart-warming scenes with dire warnings, both from daily life.

Many of the passages in Sepher HaChassidim are homiletic and exegetic, explaining the philosophical or mystical meanings of Biblical verses and Talmudic sayings. Nonetheless, it is primarily a masterwork of ethical instruction, enjoining how to resist temptation and avoid sin; how to dress, speak, pray and work; how to choose a wife and select companions; how to harmonise the necessities of existence with the requirements of religious life; how to choose a righteous teacher, and many other subjects.
