Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Colonia, 1580. This depiction of Tunis shows the town under siege: the town is seen from the east, as well as the Gulf of Tunis, and the large stagnant lagoon (stagnum), today called El Bahira, in front of it. At both entrances to the sea the fortresses La Goulette and Nova Arx are found; the town is seen in the background. Tunis, which was founded before the 9th century BC, was always an apple … [Click Below for Full Description]

ISSELBURG, Peter and Georg REMUS.
1580. Berlin Kat. 4536; Landwehr, German emblem books 372; Müller, Nürnberger Kupferstich 154; Praz, p. 381. First edition of a political emblem book with engravings by Peter Isselburg (1580-ca. 1630) and published directly from the artist's workshop. After the title-page and the leaf with the coats of arms, are five letterpress text leaves, explaining the origin and significance of the 32 emblems generally, with verses in German providing explanations for each individual emblem, also including bibliographical references. Both the text and the Latin verses below each emblem are by George Remus (1561-1625). The designs of the emblems are based on the paintings of the great chamber of the city hall of Nuremberg. The present copy has been recently rebound in a attractive bibliophile binding by Antonio Perez-Noriega, a master pupil of Jean de Gonet. One emblem has been (rather clumsily) coloured, leaving some water stains on the following plate, otherwise in very good condition, some pages only slightly wrinkled. [Attributes: First Edition]

DSB IV, p. 552; VD 17, 23:297705X (2 copies); WorldCat (3 copies). Rare first and only edition of a work solving a mathematic problem concerning the calculation of compound interest, by Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635), teacher of mathematics at Ulm. Faulhaber, trained as a weaver under his father, soon turned to mathematics. He became the most important of the "Cossists", mathematicians concerned with algebra in the 16th century. After publishing his first arithmetic text, Faulhaber founded his own school in Ulm in 1600, which gained international fame as an educational institute for higher mathematics and later also an artillery and engineering school. He taught Descartes and had a lively contact with Keppler. Faulhaber was also the first to introduce logarithms into Germany and was much in demand as fortification engineer, receiving many assignments in this field from the King of Sweden and others. He published numerous mathematical works, mostly in German, and invented several instruments. With library stamps. In good condition, with some worm holes in the gutter margin, not affecting the text, and some minor water stains.

Martino ROTA (Sebenico 1520 - Venezia 1583)
Engraving, signed at lower centre. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with margins, in excellent condition. Rota was one of those artists who exported Northward the Italian technique and style of printing; he was also one of the most skilled acolytes of Marcantonio. According to the addresses carved on many plates, he was born in Sibenik, in Dalmatia, the same native region of Schiavone. Nonetheless, there are bit a few news about his life before his arrival in Rome in 1540, where he worked ad engraver. His first prints combined Marcantonio's refined style and a growing technical skill. Bartsch 17; Bury, The print in Italy 1550-1620, p. 191.

Heinsius, Daniel (ed.)
12 [20] ff., 411, 43 (index)] pp., 1 oversized, folding map. Engraved title page. Preliminary p. [40] and p. 92 printed in red and black. Contemporary vellum. Gilt spine. Label on spine. Triple gilt rules on covers. All edges gilt. First this Elzevier edition, being the first Heinsius edition. This edition suffers from some errors in the text, which Heinsius's son attributed to the printer. Provenience: Front free endpaper with librarystamps: "Bibliothèque de M. A. R. Courbonne - Fallitur hora legendo", "Egregios Cumulare - Libros - Praeclara Supellex - Bibliotheca Cortina". The printing house of Elzevier in the north of the Netherlands (established in Leiden) is often compared to that of Plantin in the Southern Netherlands (established in Antwerp). Both were very successful commercial establishments which carried on for generations in the same family. Elzevier texts, often in small formats, were distributed throughout Europe. This edition of Virgil was edited by Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), was professor of Greek and Latin at Leiden and one of the most famous Renaissance scholars. Slightely worn.

NAIBOD, Valentin / [NABOD]
Venice: Paulo Meietti, 1580. Soft cover. Very Good. Large 8vo. [14.5 x 9.9 cm]. (8), 192 ff., with numerous textual woodcut illustrations. Bound in contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine. Minor rubbing to binding, some wrinkling to spine. Minor browning in some quires, some minor marginal worming not affecting text, a few contemporary inscriptions in the text. Generally very good. Very rare first edition, second issue of this understudied work, "apparently the earliest Italian imprint to depict and discuss the Copernican system" (Gingerich) by the Cologne-born Professor of Mathematics at Padua. The work includes a printed diagram of the geo-heliocentric system of Martianus Capella (41r) as well as a diagram and exposition of the Copernican system (leaf 41v). The work is included in the Galileo bibliography of Cinti (no. 5) owing to the Copernican diagram. Cinti does not comment further than this, but it is interesting to speculate that the young Galileo (b. 1564), whether as a student at Pisa or a lecturer at Padua, may have encountered the Copernican hypothesis in the present work. It is not surprising that the exegesis of Copernicus would come relatively late to Catholic Italy in comparison to Protestant, German speaking countries, in light of both the establishment of the Index of Prohibited Books (1559) and the widespread efforts of the Counter-Reformation to insure doctrinal conformity in printed books. That it passed the watchful eye of the censor at all is probably due to its appearance in an unassuming astronomy primer and the somewhat hypothetica … [Click Below for Full Description]
