1580. Antique Master Print, untitled. A shepherd with goats. Engraving on hand laid paper. Description: From a set of fourteen prints with animals and landscapes. State: Only state. Ref: Hollstein 328 / Roethlisberger 139. Print from a very popular and widely copied set.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Boetius Adam Bolswert' after 'Abraham Bloemaert'. Boetius a Bolswert (1580-1633) was a renowned copper-plate engraver from Friesland. In his time the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens called forth new endeavours by engravers to imitate or reproduce the breadth, density of mass and dynamic illumination of those works. Boetius Bolswert was an important figure in this movement, not least because he was the elder brother and instructor of the engraver Schelte à Bolswert, whose reproductions of Rubens's landscapes were most highly esteemed in their own right. Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) was a Dutch painter and etcher/engraver. He was one of the 'Haarlem Mannerists', but shifted towards a more Baroque style around 1600. Condition: Very good, given age. Margins cropped close to the platemark, a tiny hole in the top edge of the image. Some soiling General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. 1580. Map: 'Mansfeldiae Comitatus Descriptio, auctore Tilemanno Stella Sig.' Attractive regional map of Germany centers on Mansfeld and Eisleben with nice detail along the Wipper and Saale Rivers. The map is graphically engraved to illustrate the forests and marshes and filled with place names. The map is based on the cartography of Stella and Mellinger. Dutch text on verso. On the left side on verso a handwritten text. Engraving / etching on a verge type of hand-laid paper. Description: This antique map was published ca. 1580 as part of the Atlas: 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.', by Ortelius.Artists and Engravers: Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately. TAHUREAU (Jacques)
[Click Below for Full Description]

LAON
Paris, Jean Coquerel, 1580. ______ Format : In-8. *-------* A description of an earthquake in Laon, interpreted as a divine manifestation. No copy known of this very rare booklet in public libraries of the world.

BELVISUS IACOBUS
Coloniae, apud Maternum Cholinum, 1580. Cm. 16,5, pp. (24) 667 (61). Boetius Bolswert was an important figure in this movement, not least because he was the elder brother and instructor of the engraver Schelte à Bolswert, whose reproductions of Rubens's landscapes were most highly esteemed in their own right.
