Suarez, Francisco.
ca.1580-1620. 8°. 93 leaves ((2), 188 pages). Hardcover / Original pigskin. Very good condition with only minor split to upper hinge. Some external wear. Faint dampstain to lower margins. The manuscript seems to be either a compendium of excerpts related to Suarez' „De Simonia" or even an outline of the work. While it looks like a personal selection, a summary of chapters of the writer, the irregular corrrespondence of chapters between the manuscript and the finished work, allows us to speculate on this manuscript being a possible draft. The manuscript is quarto sized in contemporary vellum with the title penned on an upper spine compartment and the number 41 at the foot of the spine. The manuscript has a title page stating ‚De Simonia' which precedes the 93 leaf treatise and is followed by two leaves of ‚Index Capitum, que in hoc continentur tractatu'. The manuscript is in a regular forward sloping scribal hand with between 20 and 25 lines per page. The text is divided into 39 chapters. The Index reads: Index Capitum que in hoc continentur tractatu: I - Quid sit Simonia et uncle dicatur (identical with Chapter I of Suarez' „De Simonia" / II - Affectur divisio Simonie / III - An in peccato simoniae sit tantium malitia contra religionem an etiam contra justitiam (identical with chapter IV of „De Simonia) etc. / XVI An Beneficia Ecclesiastica sint materia Simonia Jure Divina nel Jure Ecclesiastico etc., etc. / Images of the work and the Index on request. The four books consist of the Analects of Confucius, the sayings of Mencius, the Doctrine of the Mean, and the Great Learning. BELVISUS IACOBUS
apud Maternum Cholinum, 1580. Cm. 16,5, pp. (24) 667 (61). He issued his first famous Cosmographia in 1544 with 24 double paged maps with German description of the world. It had numerous editions in different languages including Latin, French, Italian, English, and Czech. The last German edition was published in 1628, long after his death. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the notable woodcuts , some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Deutsch, and David Kandel. It was most important in reviving geography in 16th-century Europe. His first geographic works were Germania descriptio (1530) and Mappa Europae (1536). In 1540 he published a Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with illustrations. The 1550 edition contains cities, portraits, and costumes. These editions, printed in Germany, are the most valued of the Cosmographias.

Abraham Ortelius
1580 - By: Abraham Ortelius Date: 1580 (Published) Antwerp Dimensions: 15 x 19.5 inches (38 cm x 50 cm) This original authentic antique map by Ortelius shows the Iberian Peninsula with the Balearic Islands and parts of northern Africa. Spain is well described, with towns and cities, mountain ranges and rivers all depicted and named. Major cities and ports along the northern coast of Africa are also named. Lovely frigates grace the waters and friendly looking sea monsters swim off the coast. There is a mileage scale in the lower left, and an ornamental title cartouche fills the lower right quadrant. This is an excellent map for someone who wants to experience the high seas, the wind and salt air, to relive the adventure of exploring this part of the world at the end of the sixteenth century. Condition: This map is in C+ condition. The condition suggests that it was consulted for navigational purposes, for it has been well used. There is toning of the borders and some staining, primarily of the borders. There are some rust spots in the body of the map and some tears in the borders which have been repaired with archival material on the verso. Pin holes at the corners. Inventory #19435

The Latin translation from the Hebrew and Syriac was the work of Immanuel Tremellius (1510-1580), an Italian Jewish convert, first to Catholicism, then to Protenstantism. In 1547 he was invited to England by Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1549 he succeeded Paul Fagius as Regius professor of Hebrew at Cambridge. He was assisted by Franciscus Junius (the Elder) (1545-1602), his son-in-law. Tremellius' translation first appeared in 1569 in Geneva, and portions relating to the Old Testament were published at Franfurt between 1575 and 1579. He here improved on the work of Thomas Berthelet's 1535 partial printing of the Vulgate to such an extent that he ultimately exerted considerable influence in England and on the Continent ("Although his version was far from faultless, it evinced very thorough scholarship, and for long, both in England and on the continent, was adopted by the reformers as the most accurate Latin rendering. With some alterations it even received the sanction of the universities of Douai and Louvain"; see ODNB). S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes van der Straet detto STRADANUS (Bruges 1523 - Firenze 1605)
Dimensioni circa 256x201. Hol … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROLL, Oswald.
1580. Duveen, p. 150; Partington II, pp. 174-177; cf. Thorndike V, pp. 649-651; for Croll: DSB III, pp. 471-472. Rare second(?) edition by the original publisher and in the original Latin, of the most important work of the chemist, alchemist and physician Oswald Croll (1580-1609). It mixes chemical and spiritual means of healing, following Paracelsus both by supporting the theory that man is a microcosmos incorporating the universe, and by the 80-page second part on the doctrine of signatures, which suggests that herbs resembling parts of the human body can be used to treat ailments of that part. The Basilica chymica provides the reader with a large number of secret alchemical recipes and information about curative objects. The Basilica chymica quickly became and remained the standard scientific work on iatrochemistry, a branch of both chemistry and medicine, rooted in alchemy and seeking to provide chemical solutions to diseases and medical ailments. With owners' inscriptions and early manuscript notes. Slightly browned, with chips in the fore-edge of the first two leaves, occasional minor stains and spots, but otherwise in good condition. Binding with stains and a couple cuts but structurally sound. An essential work for both alchemy and the birth of modern medical chemistry.
