CROLL, Oswald.
Duveen, p. 150; Partington II, pp. 174-177; cf. Thorndike V, pp. 649-651; for Croll: DSB III, pp. 471-472. Rare second(?) edition by the original publisher and in the original Latin, of the most important work of the chemist, alchemist and physician Oswald Croll (1580-1609). It mixes chemical and spiritual means of healing, following Paracelsus both by supporting the theory that man is a microcosmos incorporating the universe, and by the 80-page second part on the doctrine of signatures, which suggests that herbs resembling parts of the human body can be used to treat ailments of that part. The Basilica chymica provides the reader with a large number of secret alchemical recipes and information about curative objects. The Basilica chymica quickly became and remained the standard scientific work on iatrochemistry, a branch of both chemistry and medicine, rooted in alchemy and seeking to provide chemical solutions to diseases and medical ailments. With owners' inscriptions and early manuscript notes. Slightly browned, with chips in the fore-edge of the first two leaves, occasional minor stains and spots, but otherwise in good condition. Binding with stains and a couple cuts but structurally sound. An essential work for both alchemy and the birth of modern medical chemistry.

DV1702-28) ZURITA (Jerónimo).
Zaragoza, Domingo de Portonarijs y Ursino, 1580. - 2 volumes in folio. 6ff. 351ff. chiffrés (i.e. 361). 1f. + 6ff. 407ff. chiffrés. 1f. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAUN GEORG-HOGENBERG FRANZ.
1580. Incisione in rame, mm 370x470, colorata d'epoca.

Antique Master Print, untitled. A view with a couple entering a town. Engraving on laid paper. Watermark: Coat of arms of Strasbourg. Description: Nice early impression. Ref: Hollstein 348.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Boetius a Bolswert' after 'Abraham Bloemaert'. Boetius a Bolswert (1580-1633) was a renowned copper-plate engraver from Friesland. In his time the paintings of Peter Paul Rubens called forth new endeavours by engravers to imitate or reproduce the breadth, density of mass and dynamic illumination of those works. Boetius Bolswert was an important figure in this movement, not least because he was the elder brother and instructor of the engraver Schelte à Bolswert, whose reproductions of Rubens's landscapes were most highly esteemed in their own right. Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) was a Dutch painter and etcher/engraver. He was one of the 'Haarlem Mannerists', but shifted towards a more Baroque style around 1600. Condition: Good, given age.
