HERODOTE
[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition Binding in hand maroquin old red ca 1860 signed Capé. Back with nerves decorated with 4 small florets. Title and golden date. Cold framing on boards with angular flags. Slices sorted. Rich interior frieze. Bits, caps and rubbed … [Click Below for Full Description]

FAULHABER, Johann.
Bircher A 4515; VD 17, 23:000295W (3 copies); not in Balsiger; Berlin Kat.; Jammes, Cabinets de curiosités; Murray; Sloos, Warfare and the age of printing; for Faulhaber: DSB IV, pp. 549-552. Very rare first and only edition of a catalogue of military and other instruments, models of machines, plans, etc., that Faulhaber displayed in the "Kunstkammer" in his house in Ulm. Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635), taught mathematics at Ulm, where his family moved around 1461, after serving as vassals of the Abbot of Fulda. He became the most important of the "Cossists", mathematicians concerned with algebra. After publishing his first arithmetic text, Faulhaber founded his own school in Ulm in 1600, which grew into an internationally famous educational institute for higher mathematical sciences. He later added an artillery and engineering school. Descartes came to study with him, and Faulhaber had a lively contact with Kepler. Applying mathematics to military engineering, the building of fortifications and the art of fire-arms, Faulhaber was also much in demand as fortification engineer, receiving commissions from the King of Sweden and many others. He published a large number of mathematical works, mostly in German, and invented a number of instruments and machines. Two different readers have checked off items in the catalogue, perhaps indicating those in their own collections. In very good condition.

[SCOTT, Thomas].
Knuttel 3529 (part 2: cf. 3056: a similar ed. of part 1); Sabin 78376 & 78377; STC 22100.2 & 22103.3; STCN (3 copies of part 2: cf. 2 similar eds. of part 1). Two rare popular pamphlets warning English and Dutch Protestants against the machinations of Spain, by the fervently anti-papist minister and pamphleteer Thomas Scott (ca. 1580-1626). Both pamphlets describe in detail how the Spanish Parliament under the direction of Gondomar, the Spanish Ambassador to England from 1613 to1622 (and influential thereafter), plotted against the English, greatly helped by the many high-placed Jesuits in England, over whom Gondomar also held his sway. Both parts claim to be translations of original Spanish reports, but they were in fact invented by Scott as pieces of political propaganda. There are several editions of both parts and the order of publication is unknown. First accepted by many as genuine history, the pamphlet caused a great stir and was immediately suppressed in England, but it was found to have been printed abroad, probably in the Netherlands. Of special interest in the present English edition are the fine engravings, which do not appear in the Dutch translation. With the bookplates of James Bindley (d. 1818), William Stirling (ca. 1895?) and Gordon W. Jones. Part 1 in very good condition, with some stains and repairs in the gutter margin of the 2 outermost leaves; part 2 slightly browned and a few leaves with waterstains, but still good. Part 1 has been trimmed slightly smaller than part 2. Two anti-Spanish political pamphlets, both of American interest.

HUGO, Herman
De Backer & Sommervogel IV, col. 513; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) III, Bolswert 145-192; Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 345; Porteman, Emblematic exhibitions, p. 17, fig. 6; Praz, pp. 143 ff.; STCV 6826501 (4 copies). First edition, in the original Latin, of the most popular spiritual love emblem book ever published, illustrated with the beautiful emblematic designs of the great baroque artist Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert (ca. 1580-1633). Herman Hugo (1588-1629), a Jesuit priest who lived in Antwerp and elsewhere in the southern Low Countries, made the genre popular throughout Europe with his Pia desideria and especially its beautiful emblems by Van Bolswert. Its emblems, mixing heart-warming scenes of tenderness with dire warnings to sinners, even inspired the Protestant Jan Luyken's Jesus en de Ziel. Though the use of the Latin language would have demanded a fairly well-educated reader, it was still the language of the Catholic Church and the book clearly spoke to the common people. For this reason, the emblems depict people (often represented by putti) in daily life. With early owner's inscriptions on title-page mostly erased and a 17th-century interlinear inscription between the first lines of the dedication, and a 20th-century bookplate of Jos van der Steen. With a small rust hole in 1 leaf and an occasional, usually marginal brown stain, but still in very good condition. A seminal emblematic work mixing heart-warming scenes with dire warnings, both from daily life.

PERS, Dirck Pietersz. [and Hadrianus DAMMAN].
Landwehr, Emblem Books Low Countries 618-619; Praz, pp. 450-451; STCN (5 copies); WorldCat (4 other copies). Rare first edition of the most popular work of Dirck Pietersz. Pers (1580-1662), reformed bookseller/publisher and poet. For almost a century, Pers managed to reach a large audience with this work that was reprinted more than 15 times during the 17th century. This success can mainly be ascribed to the fine combination of edifying religious songs and enigmatic emblems. It was based on Hadrianus Damman's emblem book from 1578. Landwehr records 2 issues of this edition; with 5 (1st issue) respectively 4 (2nd issue) lines of errata on the verso of the last leaf and a repetition of emblem 3 as the first emblem. Our copy has 4 lines, and the correct emblem (no. 5) as first emblem, thus making this the second corrected issue. With bookplate. Spine rubbed, but binding otherwise good. Some occasional thumbing and spots and the gutter of the title-page restored. Very good copy.

(WITCHCRAFT). BODIN, JEAN
Paris: Jacques du Puys, 1580. FIRST EDITION n. Reflecting the author's strong need to protect society from sorcery, this is the first appearance of a manual for judges in witchcraft trials and a landmark work notable for its particularly hard-line support of the prosecution and persecution of witches. French jurist Jean Bodin (1529-96) was highly educated in the humanist tradition, and his works on political philosophy and economics were much respected and highly influential--which makes his belief in witchcraft and strong support of witch hunting all the more puzzling and lamentable. As judge in numerous witch trials, Bodin formulated one of the earliest legal definitions of a witch: "one who knowing God's law tries to bring about some act through an agreement with the Devil." Robbins describes him as "an unmitigated bigot" who did not shrink from torturing women, children, or invalids in order to obtain confessions. According to Bodin, normal protections afforded criminal defendants must be dispensed with, as "not one out of a million witches would be accused or punished, if regular legal procedure were followed." Death by burning was the appropriate punishment, and any judge who did not impose a sentence of death on a sorcerer should, in Bodin's view, be put to death himself. Because of his prominence as a scholar, Bodin's writings on witchcraft were persuasive at a time when skepticism about the supernatural was on the rise, and "Demonomanie" had appeared in 20 editions in four languages by 1600. Our sought-after first printing is rare in the marketplace: only seven cop … [Click Below for Full Description]

ISSELBURG, Peter and Georg REMUS.
Berlin Kat. 4536; Landwehr, German emblem books 372; Müller, Nürnberger Kupferstich 154; Praz, p. 381. First edition of a political emblem book with engravings by Peter Isselburg (1580-ca. 1630) and published directly from the artist's workshop. After the title-page and the leaf with the coats of arms, are five letterpress text leaves, explaining the origin and significance of the 32 emblems generally, with verses in German providing explanations for each individual emblem, also including bibliographical references. Both the text and the Latin verses below each emblem are by George Remus (1561-1625). The designs of the emblems are based on the paintings of the great chamber of the city hall of Nuremberg. The present copy has been recently rebound in a attractive bibliophile binding by Antonio Perez-Noriega, a master pupil of Jean de Gonet. One emblem has been (rather clumsily) coloured, leaving some water stains on the following plate, otherwise in very good condition, some pages only slightly wrinkled.

FRISIUS, Simon.
Burch 10; Hollstein (Dutch and Flemish) VII, p. 28 (Frisius 92-103). Series of 12 numbered plates of birds (11 plates) and butterflies (1 plate) set in beautiful landscapes, engraved in reverse by Simon Wynouts Frisius (ca. 1580-1629) after the plates of the series by Marcus Gheeraerts I (not Marcus Gheeraerts II as catalogued by Hollstein). Originally published by Hendrik Hondius in 1610.The series is here in its third state with the "F. de Widt excudit" on the first plate, but with the monogram of Claes Jansz. Visscher, who acquired the plates from Hondius, still present on the other plates. Frederick De Wit was active in Amsterdam from 1654-1690 (Gruys & De Wolf, p. 199) and the paper is watermarked with a seven-pointed foolscap very similar to Laurentius II, 476, dated 1686, so the series was probably issued around that time.Minor stain on the first leaf not affecting the plate and the last leaf browned with torn-off corner restored. Very good copy.

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Colonia, 1580. This depiction of Tunis shows the town under siege: the town is seen from the east, as well as the Gulf of Tunis, and the large stagnant lagoon (stagnum), today called El Bahira, in front of it. At both entrances to the sea the fortresses La Goulette and Nova Arx are found; the town is seen in the background. Tunis, which was founded before the 9th century BC, was always an apple … [Click Below for Full Description]
