BIBLE, LATIN [TREMELLIUS, Immanuel; JUNIUS, Franciscus]
Excudebat Henricus Middletonus. Woodcut title vignette, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Later tree calf in a contemporary style, spine with raised bands and "Biblia Sacra" in gilt; very narrow strip cut away from top of title page affecting manuscript ownership signature. Lacking the final two parts as well as the separate title pages for the second through fourth individual parts. Contemporary annotations. First edition of the first complete Latin Bible printed in England, one of five imprints of the 1580 edition. The Latin translation from the Hebrew and Syriac was the work of Immanuel Tremellius (1510-1580), an Italian Jewish convert, first to Catholicism, then to Protenstantism. In 1547 he was invited to England by Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1549 he succeeded Paul Fagius as Regius professor of Hebrew at Cambridge. He was assisted by Franciscus Junius (the Elder) (1545-1602), his son-in-law. Tremellius' translation first appeared in 1569 in Geneva, and portions relating to the Old Testament were published at Franfurt between 1575 and 1579. He here improved on the work of Thomas Berthelet's 1535 partial printing of the Vulgate to such an extent that he ultimately exerted considerable influence in England and on the Continent ("Although his version was far from faultless, it evinced very thorough scholarship, and for long, both in England and on the continent, was adopted by the reformers as the most accurate Latin rendering. With some alterations it even received the sanction of the universities of Douai and Louvain"; see ODNB). S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes van der Straet detto STRADANUS (Bruges 1523 - Firenze 1605)
Dimensioni circa 256x201. Hol … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROLL, Oswald.
1580. Duveen, p. 150; Partington II, pp. 174-177; cf. Thorndike V, pp. 649-651; for Croll: DSB III, pp. 471-472. Rare second(?) edition by the original publisher and in the original Latin, of the most important work of the chemist, alchemist and physician Oswald Croll (1580-1609). It mixes chemical and spiritual means of healing, following Paracelsus both by supporting the theory that man is a microcosmos incorporating the universe, and by the 80-page second part on the doctrine of signatures, which suggests that herbs resembling parts of the human body can be used to treat ailments of that part. The Basilica chymica provides the reader with a large number of secret alchemical recipes and information about curative objects. The Basilica chymica quickly became and remained the standard scientific work on iatrochemistry, a branch of both chemistry and medicine, rooted in alchemy and seeking to provide chemical solutions to diseases and medical ailments. With owners' inscriptions and early manuscript notes. Slightly browned, with chips in the fore-edge of the first two leaves, occasional minor stains and spots, but otherwise in good condition. Binding with stains and a couple cuts but structurally sound. An essential work for both alchemy and the birth of modern medical chemistry.

VALOROSE PROVE
[Click Below for Full Description]

Willer, Georg.
"Before that date printers visiting the fair must have had to write out by hand countless lists of new books to send to their customers: thereafter they could send copies of the fair catalogue to the local booksellers all over Europe, who in turn passed them on to their customers. The fair catalogue was a co-operative effort: the printers coming to the fair sent in advance title-pages of the books they were bringing, so that Willer could arrange them in subject order before printing his catalogue " (Pollard/Ehrman). "(These) catalogues represent the first international bibliographies of a periodic character, attempting to list every six months all new publications issued in Europe, and they can be considered the prototype of today's Books in Print. The books are arranged by subject; for the first time, place, publisher, and date are always mentioned" (Breslauer/Folter). – Breitrandig. Frühe Meßkataloge sind sehr selten. – VD 16, W 3172. CROLL, Oswald.

DV1702-28) ZURITA (Jerónimo).
Zaragoza, Domingo de Portonarijs y Ursino, 1580. - 2 volumes in folio. 6ff. 351ff. chiffrés (i.e. 361). 1f. + 6ff. 407ff. chiffrés. 1f. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAUN GEORG-HOGENBERG FRANZ.
1580. Incisione in rame, mm 370x470, colorata d'epoca.
