Bock, Hieronymus.
[Strasbourg, Josias Rihel, 1580]. Small folio (220 x 320 mm). (14 [instead of 30]), 447 (instead of 450), (20 [instead of 23]) ff. With more than 570 woodcuts in the text, most of which in original hand colour. One woodcut portrait of the author and one armorial woodcut, both in original hand colour. 18th century blindstamped half calf over marbled boards. A posthumous edition of the popular herbal book by the German pastor and botanist Bock (1498-1554) , presenting "an extraordinarily graphic, humorous description of the plants, showing his close relation to nature" (cf. Nissen), alongside woodcut illustrations by the Strasbourg artist David Kandel. Covering some 700 plants, this work discusses the time and place of each plant's occurence, their shape and appearance, etymology as well as medicinal benefits. This edition is the second one to include the "Teutsche Speiskammer", also by Bock, first issued with the "Kreuter Buch" by the editor Melchior Sebizius in 1577: it provides advice on nutrition and on growing herbs and fruits and is illustrated by 19 woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer and Christoph Maurer. The "excellent portrait [.] in a Renaissance style frame" (cf. Ritter) shows Bock at the age of 46, holding a blooming flower. Some handwritten notes in ink, e.g.: "wechst in des Toffl Casper wisen [.] hinab bei dem Zaun" (f. 24r), "Roseinlein, heissen kleine weinperlen" (f. 229r), "für die unkeuschen frawen" (f. 249r). 19th century ownership by Peter Hiblbaumer to front pastedown. - Wants the title-page, most of the first preface, the front indices, as well as the final page … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sophocles
Antuerpiae: Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1579 [t.p.]; 1580 [colophon]. Text in Greek. 431, [17] pp. Printer's device on title-page. 1 vols. 16mo. Sophocles to Plantin to Eton to the Blackstones. One of the landmark 16th-century editions of the great Greek tragedian, published by press of Christopher Plantin in Antwerp, and edited with notes by the young Dutch scholar Willian Canter, whose earlier edition of Euripides "established a new era" (Samdys) in the printing of the Greek tragic poets. It was Canter, in his earlier edition of Euripides, who first established the arrangement of the choral odes in enumerated lines of Strophe and Antistrophe - a practice continued here and in his subsequent Aeschylus and which continues today. Canter's edition of Sophocles, with his corrections to the text of Turnebus presented in his Latin Notes (pp. 429-436), remained in use for 200 years (cf. Jebb in his Introduction to his edition of 1887) This particular copy has a fascinating provenance, with historic associations from ETON. The flyleaf bears the ink inscription: "Wm. Cole / E dono J. Foster, eruditissimi Scholae Etonensis Archididascali. 1772" [Given to W. COLE by JOHN FOSTER, learned Headmaster of Eton College. 1772." On the facing endpaper, in later hand, is the ink inscription: "Henricus Lee / E Dono M. Cole, uxoris Gulielmio Cole, Prebendarii Westmensteriensii Cathedrae. 1812." [Given to HENRY LEE by MARY COLE, wife of WILLIAM COLE, Prebendary of Westmenster Cathedral. 1812."] JOHN FOSTER (1731-1774), classical scholar, was Headmaster at Eton from 1765 to 1773. Giacomo FRANCO
Venezia, 1580. [Click Below for Full Description]

Roma. Acquaforte e bulino, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. 1597. In Firenze, Appresso Giovanni Baleni, s.d. 1580. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Henri Stephanus, or Estienne, was a prolific 16th-century printer who began publishing works of Classical authors such as Aristotle, Xenophon, Thyucidides, Sophocles, and Herodotus. 'Apologie pour Herodote,' Estienne's most famous treatise, is a monumental work of French prose and satire. Written as an apology of Herodotus, the book is actually a provocative attack on the Catholic Church. Renouard says of this book: "Under the pretense of a defense of Herodotus, this book is a violent attack of Roman Catholicism and a satire of the sixteenth century society." In this piece of anti-Catholic propaganda, Estienne describes the main sins of the time, giving special attention to the sins of priests and church fathers. He addresses the prevalence of sodomy and slander within the Catholic Church. [Attributes: First Edition]

My condition description is longer than the characters allowed in this section so I added it to the book description below. You can see more pictures of this book at my public Flickr photo album at: https://flic.kr/s/aHskpNm4YL Executive Summary A nice early (1580) edition documenting the Kings of France, put together for Henri II in the 16th century. The work is widely noted and still respected because the author used archive sources for his history, rather than legend, marking this work more trustworthy than many other so called "histories". The first part of the book describes each of the Kings (from Hugh Capet to Henry II) with portraits of each King in a medallion with the insignia of royalty, and sometimes with weapons (note that some medallions remained empty, 42 in portrait medallions and 16 empty medallions). There are also illustrations of twenty-three coat-of-arms. The author also captured the history of ceremony at the French court, beginning from the times of the Germanic tribes. The author's descriptions of ceremonies is often still cited in academic research of the French court. Giacomo FRANCO (Venezia o Urbino 1550 - Venezia 1620)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Cl ver was an antiquary, who was given a special appointment at Leiden as geographer and put in charge of the university's library, but his life's project, it developed, was a general study of the geography of Antiquity, based not only on classical literary sources, but ó and this was his contribution ó supplemented by wide travels and local inspections.
Foglio molto raro. Engraving, circa 1580, signed at lower center. After Federico Zuccari. A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, good conditions. The scene is shot, albeit with some modifications, by the Flagellation that Federico Zuccari painted in Rome in 1575 for the Oratory of Gonfalone. Martino ROTA (Sebenico 1520 - Venezia 1583)
Engraving, signed at lower centre. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with margins, in excellent condition. Rota was one of those artists who exported Northward the Italian technique and style of printing; he was also one of the most skilled acolytes of Marcantonio. According to the addresses carved on many plates, he was born in Sibenik, in Dalmatia, the same native region of Schiavone. Nonetheless, there are bit a few news about his life before his arrival in Rome in 1540, where he worked ad engraver. His first prints combined Marcantonio's refined style and a growing technical skill. Bartsch 17; Bury, The print in Italy 1550-1620, p. 191. Dimensioni 217x339.

DANEAU, Lambert
1580. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Lambert Daneau was a French Calvinist known for his controversial books on witchcraft, sorcery, and science in the Bible. In 1576, Daneau first published 'Physica Christiana' a treatise in which he argued that physics needed to be rooted in scripture for authenticity. He asks questions that are unknowable that many people still seek the answers to, such as 'is the world eternal?' or 'is God the efficient cause of the cosmos?'. (Banks). This 1580 edition contains Daneau's notes and theories on the development of animals and plants, meteors and celestial bodies, wind, light, and behavior of phenomena of nature.
