Alber, Erasmus
Apud Guilielmum Laimarium, Genf, 1578. Octavo. 138 x 85 mm. [8], 343, [1] Seiten. - Seiten (13)-382, [2 weiße] Seiten [so komplett!]. - Lagenkollation: §4, a-x8, y4 - A2, A-Z8, Aa8. [Click Below for Full Description]

Plate 42: Man rescued from a snake pit. In the background also a man on horseback hunting deer. (Bottom latin text: 'Saepe quidem incautus Venator in antra, cauernas .') Copperplate engraving on a rather flocky verge type hand laid paper. Watermark not visible. We had the paper assessed by expert as early to mid 17th c. Description: This rare antique copperplate engraving originates from: 'Venationes ferarum, auium, piscium. Pugnae bestiariorum: & mutuae bestiarum.' The first recorded issue was dated 1578 and published in Antwerp by Phillip Galle with 104 plates. We believe this print to be from a 1636 edition published by Joannes Galle. Other 17th. c. editions exist by Nicolaes Visscher, Joannes Janssonius and others. Artists and Engravers: This plate is engraved by Joannes Collaert after Joannes Stradanus. Other plates are by Cornelis Galle, Carolus de Mallery and others. Joannes Stradanus (Brugge, 1523 - Florence, 1605) or Jan van der Straet, Giovanni della Strada, Giovanni Stradano, Giovanni Stratensis, worked principally in Italy as a designer of cartoons for tapestries. From 1553-1571 he was employed by Cosimo de Medici who commissioned him to make a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. These are the designs so magnificently commemorated in the Venationes, blending well-tried renaissance hunting methods with fabulous subject matter drawn from Persia, India and the East. Joannes (Hans, Jan) Collaert (Antwerp, c. 1545 - 1628) was a Flemish engraver, son of Adrian Collaert. Co … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

NAGEREL (Jean).
(Frère, Manuel du Bibliographe Normand, I, 242-243).

Benzoni, Girolamo:
[Geneva]: Eustatium Vignon, 1578. [32],480,[12]pp. Lacks errata leaf. Later mottled calf, gilt leather label. Armorial bookplate of the Marquess of Tweeddale on front pastedown. Titlepage lightly soiled, contemporary inscriptions, small portion of top corner torn away on first two leaves. Top edge trimmed closely, affecting running title and page numbers in some leaves. Internally fresh and clean. Very good. First Latin edition of Benzoni's important early account of the New World, translated from the first edition printed in Italian in 1565. Benzoni's history is the first significant work on the Americas based on firsthand observations by a non-Spaniard, and was one of the most widely disseminated texts of its day. This edition also includes the Latin translation of Nicolas Le Chailleux's DISCOURS DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA FLORIDE, first published in Dieppe in 1565, an account of the French expedition to Florida in the mid-16th century. Born in Milan, Benzoni spent fourteen years travelling through the Americas, beginning in 1541. He was familiar with the Antilles, Guatemala, and the west coast of South America, and provides descriptions of these regions, as well as a history of the New World from the arrival of Columbus to the conquest of Peru. The work is also notable for containing an early account of the use of tobacco. Engaged in commerce, Benzoni quickly developed an intense enmity for the Spanish and their administration, and he treats them quite unfavorably in his text. He denounces the Spanish for their treatment of the Indians (in contrast, a good portion of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

He denounces the Spanish for their treatment of the Indians - in contrast, a good portion of the text describes Indian life before it became corrupted by European contact - and the aut … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAXTON, Christopher - WEB, William
London: (1578-[1645]). 355 x 465 mm. Uncoloured, light age toning to the margins, a centrefold split in the lower margin and a short tear, again in the lower margin, both repaired with old paper, both short of the image, otherwise a very good example.; Evans and Lawrence speculate that the surveying of Pembroke was one of the very last counties undertaken. The majority of the Welsh counties were surveyed in 1578. It is unsigned by any engraver and it would be hard to suggest anyone. This is one county map in which Web did not anglicise the title, only the date change can be noted.William Web (fl.1629-52) was a bookseller from Oxford. In 1645 he published 'The Maps of all the Shires in England and Wales. Exactly taken and truly described by Christopher Saxton'. The imprint states 'Printed for William Web at the Globe in Cornehill, London', despite Web being a bookseller in Oxford. Quite how he came into possession of the Saxton plates is unknown. The fact that the court of Charles I was in Oxford for the duration of the Civil War (1642-46) and the atlas is dedicated to the King can be no coincidence. The war undoubtedly caused a delay as most maps bear the date of 1642 despite the title imprint being 1645. Because it did not have the same impact and no doubt because of the Civil War this edition of Saxton's atlas is one of the rarest surviving in ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES. Evans & Lawrence (1979) pp. 45-7; Shirley Atlases in the BL T.Sax 1g; Skelton (1970) 27.
