[Fioravanti, Leonardo] Falloppio, Gabriele (attributed)
Venice: Alessandro Gardane [for Giacomo Leoncini], 1578. Small octavo (145 x 90 mm). Early-18th century vellum, paper covered spine with manuscript library label, blind fillets, red speckled edges. Publisher Giacomo Leoncini's woodcut device to title page and the verso of the final leaf, 5 woodcut initials. Some contemporary or near-contemporary pen marks and short notes in the margins, many partially trimmed, more significant 12-line manuscript note to the recto of the final leaf, and pen trials, a partially illegible name, and a child's doodles to the verso of the same leaf. Vellum peeling a little from a corner of the upper board, some marks and spots to the vellum, minor area of insect damage to pastedowns and early and late leaves only slightly affecting the text, ink stain to K2 and adjacent leaves. Very good condition. A rare early edition, likely the fifth in the original Italian, of a significant book of secrets first published in 1563 and attributed to the anatomist Gabriele Falloppio (1523-1562), though probably written by the iconoclastic physician Leonardo Fioravanti (1517- c. 1588). The first five editions were all printed in Venice, with the book given its lasting form by the editor of the 1565 second edition, Borgaruccio Borgarucci. Copies of the first five editions are well-represented institutionally but rare on the market, and only two other copies have appeared at auction in recent decades. Books of secrets, compilations of natural and technical knowledge, were a popular medieval and early modern genre with roots stretching back to the Hellenistic peri … [Click Below for Full Description]

The second part contains the history of the wars of sultans Suleiman, Selim and Murad against Charles V, Ferdinand I and Maximilian II. With a highly attractive set of woodcuts from Sebastian Munster's Kosmographie and by Jost Amman. They represent battles, Janissaries, weapons, coats of arms, portrait medallions, music, architecture, shipbuilding, etc. Antoine Geuffroy was a knight of St. John, but in spite of this he maintained a surprisingly objective attitude to Turkish customs and religion. This work is noted for its sound and intelligent description of the Turkish empire (Blackmer Collection p.146)). - A very attractive copy.Atabey Collection 492 (German ed.of 1573); Blackmer Collection 679 (Latin ed. of 1577);Göllnerr 1692; Angus O’Neill, Koç Collection, 6 (French ed. of 1542). [Click Below for Full Description]

BOCCACE (Jean).
Cf. Hauvette, Les plus anciennes traductions françaises de Boccace, in: Bulletin Italien (Annales de la Faculté des Lettres de Bordeaux), IX, 1909, I, p.202. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

JODE, Gerard de
1578]., [Antwerp. De Jode's rendering of Ortelius' wall-map of the world Double-page engraved map, blank to verso. De Jode's world map was first published separately as 'Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Descriptio' in 1571. This example was prepared for his atlas, 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', in 1578. De Jode's map is drawn on a cordiform (or heart-shaped) projection, which was developed at the beginning of the sixteenth century as a reaction to the European discovery of the Americas, and the need for a more effective method of showing the surface of the newly enlarged world on a flat surface. The projection had symbolic as well as practical uses. De Jode was a Calvinist in Antwerp, at a time when the city and the Low Countries were caught in a violent struggle between the Spanish Catholic monarchy and the Protestant uprisings of the Reformation (Veldman). The world as heart was a Renaissance emblem embodying the effect of inner emotions on the physical world, but in the early sixteenth century it developed into a distinctly reformist symbol. Lutheran theologians saw the heart as the seat of human emotion, and thus central to understanding scripture. It also demonstrated the insignificance of humanity's pursuit of earthly ambitions compared to the world (Brotton). Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) was a cartographer and publisher. The 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' was intended as competition for Abraham Ortelius' 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. The two, who made their living partly as map-sellers, were competitors and apparently not always on good terms. It has been suggested that Ortelius was respo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Titolo in Marocco beige. Attrito. 2 angoli smussati. [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]

The work ends with a treatise with its own title page occupying the pages 575 to 674, the sheet 577 is missing. Only one copy is known from this edition in the French public collection at the Municipal Library of Carpentras. .Posterior binding of the seventeenth in full speckled brown sheepskin. Slight trace of clear wetness throughout the volume on some leaflets.Ex libris engraved with the arms of Suremain de Saizerey.Work of a surprising modernity, as much by its will to question the habits as by the importance which it gives to the question of well-being. Joubert endeavors to describe the opinions and usages of the time and to rectify those who are false or dangerous. He is trying to establish a doctor's etiquette. Parts are devoted to pregnancy, breastfeeding, complexion and the importance of a healthy life. He rises especially against the traditional and too frequent purgations and bloodletting. The author ends his book by commenting on 70 popular sayings about health. In 1579 appeared a second part of popular errors. Joubert who had conceived six, did not donate following his project, criticized for too much boldness. The book is dedicated to Marguerite de Navarre. This dedication was deleted in the following edition as inappropriate. Par Guillaume Bertrand En Avignon 1578 In-16 (7x11,5cm) (80) 614 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Siebmacher, Johann:
Wroclaw c.1578-1581. Oblong-8vo [170 x 220 mm] 152 leaves with 2280 painted coat of arms over pre-printed stencils. Bound together with a handwritten register on 41 leaves. 18th century quarter vellum binding. --------------------------------------- The present armorial is the most extensive, and artistically most valuable surviving Silesian armorial from the 16th century. It was used as the direct model for the first printed Silesian armorial, the Scharffenberg'sche Wappenbuch, as well as for the the Silesian section in the first two volumes of Siebmacher's Wappenbuch. It is therefore the most important source for unadulterated Silesian coat of arms from the 16th century. ---------------------------------------------- We attribute the present manuscript to Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher (1561-1611), a German coat of arms painter, engraver and publisher. His major work is his extensive Wappenbuch, which is one of the most important sources of heraldry of the German speaking regions. Siebmacher himself edited only two volumes in 1605 and 1609 in Nuremberg. After his death in 1611, the work was continued by Paul Fürst, who had acquired Siebmacher's copperplates and published further volumes in 1656, 1657 and 1665. ----------------------------------------------------- Surprisingly, nothing is known about Siebmacher's apprenticeship and life in Nuremberg. This could be because he probably spent a long time abroad. The present manuscript demonstrates that Siebmacher had close ties to Wroclaw, and perhaps there he received his education as a heraldist, engraver and printer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mercator
1578. Nice example of Mercator's map of Spain & Portugal, from Mercator's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, first published in 1578 and republished in Amsterdam beginning in 1695. Gerard Mercator published his edition of Ptolemy’s maps as what he intended as a companion to his Atlas of the Modern World. Beginning with the 1695 edition, the plates were re-worked, substituting a new cartouche within the map, containing a second title. Condition Description Original Color Gerard Mercator Biography Gerard Mercator is one of the most famous cartographers of all time. With his wife, Barbara, Mercator had six children: Arnold, Emerentia, Dorothes, Bartholomeus, Rumold, and Catharina. In 1552, Mercator moved to Duisburg from Leuven, where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1564, he was appointed the official cosmographer to the court of Duke Wilhelm of Cleve. Mercator’s most important contribution was the creation and popularization of a projection which now bears his name. On Mercator projection maps, all parallels and meridians are drawn at right angles to each other, with the distance between the parallels extending towards the poles. This allowed for accurate latitude and longitude calculation and also allowed navigational routes to be drawn using straight li … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, 1578, Latin text edition. 325 x 500mm. Fine condition. A rare 16th century map of south west Asia, covering mainly Arabia, southern Persia, and the west coast of India & Maldives, and including with Egypt & the Nile. Some of the most famous names in cartography of this period appear on this map: De Jode was the great rival of Ortelius, with whom he had a long-running feud; Gastaldi, De Jode's source, is best known for his maps in 'Lafreri-type' atlases; and Lucas & Jan van Doeticum, the engravers, are renowned for the flair of their work for Waghenaer, Linschoten and Ortelius.
