Gerard DE JODE (1509 - 1591)
Etching with engraving, before 1573. Exemple of the first edition published in 1578. Gerard DE JODE (1509 - 1591)
Bibliografia: Borri pp. 51-52, 48; Perini pp. 30-32; Almagià p. 27. Dimensioni 515x365. De Jode's map represents the first foreign reissue of the great carthographic analysis of the peninsula of Giacomo Gastaldi, published in Venice in 1561. Gastaldi's map was immediately appreciated and after 1567, the year of its author's death, it was reprinted under many circumstances: reissues, reductions, copies and fakes, until 1600. Adriaen Huybrechts (Anversa 1550 circa - 1614)
Etching and engraving, 1578, signed in plate at lower center.
Gerard DE JODE (1509-1591).
[Antwerp, circa ], 1578. Copper engraved map sheet with full contemporary colour, with no text on verso, recently remounted upon a larger sheet of paper with added French lines in gilt and blue (Very Good, excellent original colour, map trimmed to neatline as it was once bound in a contemporary atlas factice), map proper: 35 x 50 cm (13.8 x 19.7 inches). BRITISH ISLES: Angliae Scotiae et Hiberniae Nova descriptio. A stunning example of a separately issued de Jode map of the British Isles was coloured in the late 16th century in the style of the frescoes of the Gallery of Maps in Vatican. This is a beautiful example of a great classic map of the British Isles by Gerard de Jode, based on the George Lily’s (died 1559) draft. This example, corresponding the 1578 state, was published separately without text on the back and bound in an atlas factice. It was originally coloured with a magnificent late 16th full hand colour, close to the frescoes of the Gallery of Maps in Vatican, which were made between 1580-1583. Such colouring, which is more typical for the murals, and is seldom seen on works of paper. It is amongst the most decorative 16th century colouring we have encountered. Separately Published Maps by de Jode - This ia a separately issued edition without text on the back, corresponding to the state, published in 1578 atlas Speculum Orbis Terrarum by Gerard de Jode. As most of the 1578 de Jode maps were issued with text on the back in an atlas, examples were also sold by the author separately without the text (Shirley, p. 51, no. 119; KOEMAN, Atlantes Neerlandici, vol. 2, p … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Confesionario mayor en lengua mexicana y castellana is a religious work published in 1565 by Fray Alonso de Molina, written with the goal of serving as a manual for imparting the sacrament of confession to the indigenous peoples of New Spain, specifically the Nahua-speaking communities or Aztecs, after the Conquest. The work contains important descriptions of native religious traditions and of the Nahua or "Mexican" language since it was written in that language and in Spanish. DANEAU, LAMBERT
London: [Printed by John Kingston] for Andrew Maunsell, 1578. First Edition in English. This is the first appearance in English of Daneau's 1576 "Physica Christiana," the foundational work of "Mosaic physics," which attempted to reconcile the account of creation in Genesis with scientific knowledge of the natural world in order to create a "Christian natural philosophy." Though obviously theological in origin, "Christian Physics" is nevertheless substantially a work of natural history, generally adopting the Aristotelian worldview then prevalent. The first of two parts is a disquisition on creation, a long Socratic dialogue on the meaning of the opening chapters of Genesis. The second part, which occupies a good deal more than two-thirds of the volume, is a broader treatise on nature, including discussion of such things as light and shadow, meteors, the rainbow, thunder, precious stones, glass, gold, various trees, stars and planets, fish, birds, elephants, foxes, and many more topics. A Calvinist theologian forced into itinerancy because of his incautiously expressed opinions, Daneau (1530-95) produced a considerable number of books, mostly commentaries on the Bible and controversial works written against Lutherans and Catholics alike. Our copy has a couple of curious contemporary marginal annotations. On the verso of fo. 2, at the beginning of the second chapter, someone noted "Five / [s]peciall / [copie?]s of na- / [tu]rall phi- / [lo]sophye." And at the head of fo. 39 (mis-numbered 40] recto is the inscription "Sr. Walter Rawley Laureatus poeta May 4 anno reg. Eliz. 39 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plato; Jean De Serres, Henri Estienne; John Francis Rotton
Geneva: Exsduebat Henr. Stephanus, 1578. Folio. In three volumes. When issued from Henri Estienne's press in 1578, this work included all known dialogues of Plato (including those known to be spurious) and a new translation into Latin by Jean de Serres revised and corrected by Estienne. "The pagination is universally accepted as the standard system of reference to the text of Plato" (Fred Schreiber]. The first volume is dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. Volume three is dedicated to James VI of Scotland (the future King James I). This is the exact set that John Adams used in his study of Plato (see the Boston Public Library collection). It was also a major influence on Sidney noted in his Defense of Poesie. Among the more famous dialogues of Plato are the following: (Vol. I) chiefly devoted to a defense of Socrates' teaching such as the Apology, Crito, Phaedo, with the rest devoted to philosophy--Sophist, Gorgias; (Vol. II) presents the ethical and political dialouges--Philebus, Meno, Lysis, Republic, and the Laws; (Vol. III) presents Natural Philosophy and Theologytimaeus, Critias, Parmenides, Symposium, Phaedrus; Sisyphus, and list of Definitions [the Annotations to the three volumes, and an Index. That John Adams was among the best read of the Founding Fathers is no surprise but the depth of his library (which caused Abigail to despair, see McCullough). Volume 2 lacks the title page with page four being partially present with old repair (mounted). Volume 3 lacks title page as well. The dialogues are present with Greek and Latin in parallel columns. While the edges of the text … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard DE JODE (1509-1591).
[Antwerp, circa ], 1578. Copper engraved map sheet with full contemporary colour, with no text on verso, recently remounted upon a larger sheet of paper with added French lines in gilt and blue (Very Good, excellent original colour, map trimmed to neatline as it was once bound in a contemporary atlas factice), map proper: 36 x 48,5 cm (14.2 x 19 inches). BELGIUM - Flemish Region: Exactissima Flandriae Desciptio. A stunning example of a rare, separately issued map of the Flemish Region by Gerard de Jode, was coloured in the late 16th century in the style of the frescoes of the Gallery of Maps in Vatican. A detailed, original coloured separately issued map of the Flemish Region was made by Gerard de Jode. Separately Published Maps by de Jode - This is a separately issued edition without text on the back, corresponding to the state, published in 1578 atlas Speculum Orbis Terrarum by Gerard de Jode. As most of the 1578 de Jode maps were issued with text on the back in an atlas, examples were also sold by the author separately without the text (Shirley, p. 51, no. 119; KOEMAN, Atlantes Neerlandici, vol. 2, p. 206).
