[LOPEZ DE GOMARA, Francisco]
1578. Small quarto. [12],405,[3]pp. Woodcut vignette on titlepage, woodcut initials (several historiated). 19th-century black morocco, spine gilt. Rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. Fore edge of titlepage neatly remargined. Very good. Landmark early chronicle of the New World The first English edition of one of the most important early chronicles of the Spanish conquest of the New World, and one of the two chief accounts of Cortés' conquest of Mexico, the other being provided by Bernal Diaz. It is one of a handful of English language publications about the New World to appear in the 16th century, and an attractively printed work, with several large woodcut initials. Lopez de Gomara was Cortes' secretary for a number of years, and made use of his unparalleled opportunity to gather information from the primary source relating to the extraordinary exploits surrounding the overthrow of the Aztec empire. The work was first published in Zaragosa in 1552, and quickly went through a number of editions in Spain, Italy, and the Low Countries. The English translation was prepared by Thomas Nicholas, who abridged the original. A vital Elizabethan Americanum. Apud Ioannem Foulerum; Antwerp: John Fowler, 1578. Hardcover. Good. Folio, 33 cm. Old Vellum binding. Hand written spine label. Soiled. Collated: [12], 808, [11] pages. Catholic seminary and ownership stamp on title. Internally, some browning, minor dampstaining, see our pictures. Title written in a fine, old hand at bottom edge. 2nd edition of Sanders’ 1571 treatise on the divine basis of papal monarchy. Shaaber S22. Nicholas Sanders (1530-81) was a counter-revolutionary English Catholic theologian. "Universally acclaimed by the Catholics and all but won for its author a cardinal's hat. By the Protestants it was recognised as a serious threat to their intellectual position, and Sir William Cecil himself arranged for its refutation." - Milward. Per DNB: "The book [De visibili monarchia ecclesiae] is historically valuable as containing the first attempt to compile a descriptive list of the clergy and principal laity who suffered exile, imprisonment, or other losses for recusancy. The strong ultramontane position maintained by him throughout the work, his marked approval of the insurrection of 1569, and of the bull of deposition, with his panegyrics of Dr. Story, Felton, and others who had died refusing allegiance to the queen, provoked the bitterest hostility in England, and the book became subsequently a source of dangerous questionings and torments to captured priests (BURGHLEY, Execution of Justice, sig. E, ii.; ALLEN, Defence, pp. 61â€?"5; BUTLER, Memoirs, i. 425). Sanders subsequently was an active participant in Papal attempts to attack England via Ireland the Seco … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tubingae, Georgius Gruppenbachius 1578 - (12) 1515 (16) p. Contemporary blindstamped Pigskin over wooden boards with ribbed back, Folio ('Reformationsband' with many stamps on the boards depicting various saints. Johann Brenz (1499-1570) was a German reformer. Under the influence of Luther he reorganized his church at Hall, Suabia, but at the time of the Smalkaldie War, in 1546, he was obliged to flee to Württemberg. He was appointed minister of the Collegiate Church of Stuttgart in 1553, and is said to have been the first exponent of the Reformation there. In the controversies between Zwingli and Luther, he took the side of the latter, and with others wrote the famous Syngramma Suevicum (1525). He was a writer of great ability and popularity. One of his teachings was that the body of the Lord is everywhere present; hence his followers were called ‘Ubiquitarians.’) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ferentilli, M. Agostino
Venice: Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, Venice, 1578, 1578. Each section of book with separate title page dated 1578. The translation by Ferentilli of the treatise on the creation of the world by Philo of Alexandria is an unpaginated section after the paginated Discorso Universale. Both sections are complete. Only one copy of this title from 1578 is listed on OCLC. A nice copy, well inked and printed on good Renaissance paper. Original vellum binding with lettering in old pen on spine. Ten lovely illustrations in text of the first part, and there are a total of 56 elaborate initials. There are worm trails throughout but mostly these are confined to the inner margins. Occasionalloy affecting the text although not the readability of the text exce[t in a few instances where a letter has been mostly blotted out but the word can nevertheless be inferred. This copy of a scarce and rather desirable Renaissance work is considerably discounted per the worm trails. . Full Original Vellum. Very Good/N/A. Illus. by Ten Woodcut Illustrations and 56 Illustrated Initials.. Octavo, 231pp + Unpaginated Section.

ESTIENNE, Henri
Henri Estienne, Geneva, 1578. "FROM THE LIBRARY OF LOUIS IV'S FIRST MINISTER FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. (viii), 200. Roman letter, some Greek, Estienne's 'Noli Altum Sapere' woodcut device on title, small woodcut initials and headpieces, 'bibliotheca Colbertina' in C17 French hand at head of title, Antoine Buade's armorial bookplate on pastedown (Guigard II p. 101), C19 armorial bookplate of the Earl of Macclesfield on fly, Shirburn Castle blind stamp to head of first three leaves, a few early marginal annotations in Greek with underlinings. A very good, clean, well margined copy in contemporary limp vellum with yapp edges, lacking ties. First edition of Henry Estienne's erudite attack on Mario Nizzoli's popular 'Thesaurus Ciceronianus' and all such 'Ciceroniana', the last in a trilogy of works on the subject, starting with 'De Latinitate falso suspecta' (1576) and his 'Pseudo-Cicero' (1577). It had become fashionable in the sixteenth century to imitate the style and phraseology of Cicero, which Estienne agreed was fine to up a point, as long as it was practiced with discernment. In order to imitate Cicero correctly you had to know his work well which involved considerable labour, until Mario Nizzoli came to the rescue with his Thesaurus, providing easy access to Cicero's works which were deconstructed and arranged alphabetically. Although the work itself was judiciously constructed it lead to a plethora of bad imitations of Cicero, to the point that all Latin not sufficiently Ciceronian was looked down upon. Henri Estienne was critical of these excesses and pointed out the id … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, 1578, First Edition. 350 x 505mm. Lower centerfold reinforced , otherwise a very fine example. An uncommon map of France, engraved by brothers Lucas and Jan van Doeticum and published in the first edition of de Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum'. Despite being a map of France it shows the Low Countries, Switzerland and Germany east to the Rhine, Savoy and northern Italy with the course of the Po river. It is believed that de Jode had his maps ready for publication in the early 1570s but could not get a license, apparently because of interference by Ortelius, who wanted to protect his own 10-year privilege for the 'Theatrum'. By the time that expired in 1579 it was to late for De Jode to compete with Ortelius: his 'Speculum' sold poorly, as did the second, expanded edition of 1593, published by Gerard's widow and sons. After 1600 the plates were bought by Jan Baptiste Vrients, who also acquired the Ortelius rights; De Jode's maps were never printed again. Thus all editions of the De Jode maps are scarce. Plato, the classic Estienne edition, Stephanus-Platon:
Geneve, Henricus Stephanus (Henri Estienne), 1578.. Folio, circa 40 x 26 cm. Title with woodcut device, 4 (instead of 17) ff., 542 pp.; (without 4 ff.), 992 pp; 1 (of 4) ff., 416, 139 pp. Contemporary vellum with gilt covers, spine with two later labels. Adams P 1468; Schreiber 201. First complete edition of the works of Plato and the standard reference for quotations until today - the Estienne pagination is found in the margins of modern text editions. Greek and Latin parallel text throughout. The new Latin translations are by Jean de Serres, who is also the author of the three dedications, that are lacking in many copies for religious or political reasons (to to Queen Elizabeth, to Jacob VI of Scotland and to the Republic of Bern). The first volume is also lacking the preface by Henri Estienne, again because he was a protestant. This copy, as many others has obviously a catholic provenance where all protestant evidence was removed (first title with an inscription of a Jesuit College from 1669). The dialogues of Platos are though absolutely complete with the entire Greek and Latin text. - First title with small old inscripitons, endpapers with later armorial bookplate (around 1900: F. Sydney Parry). Minor browning, somewhat dusty, all three volumes with waterstain to upper white margin, not touching the text. All volumes rubbed and dusty, volumes 1 and 3 with cracked front hinges that are though solid, not loose. Altogether a very good copy with mostly clean text (apart from marginal staining). - Condition and lacking preliminary leaves strongly taken into account - the pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Military; War; Battles; Early English Printing; Polemon John]
London Henrye Bynneman & Francis Coldock [1578]. VERY RARE First Edition. Title within elaborate historiated woodcut border of military themes, printed in black letter, large engraved historiated initials throughout, head and tail pieces. Small 4to (7.5x5.75 inches approx.), bound in contemporary limp vellum, in a cloth folding case with morocco label lettered in gilt. [ii], 337, [3] pp. The original contemporary vellum binding is rather worn and the upper portion of the front cover is defective, missing a section of the vellum. The text has some expected aging, primarily at the prelims, small hole in title repaired from the verso causing very slight loss to border RARE, POLEMON'S ANTHOLOGY OF EUROPEAN BATTLES ACCRUED AND TRANSLATED FROM CONTINENTAL AUTHORS SUCH AS JOVIUS, GUICCIARDINI AND NATALIS COMES. OCLC list only 8 copies in institutional holdings, we are aware of no other copy currently available. In total Polemon's collection of descriptions from various sources covers over 40 major battles fought in Great Britain, on the Continent, and in the eastern Mediterranean, from Tarro in 1495 to Lepanto in 1572. The translation from Guicciardini is the earliest of any part of his body of work to be done into English. Polemon's endeavor was quite popular, enough so to warrant a continuation in 1587. His style of research, along with writing for an audience of wealthy and erudite and nonmilitary people had an impact on Tudor historical thought which lasted long afterwards.
