Incisione in rame, magnifica impressione, contrastata e con tono di lastra, piccolo restauro al margine inferiore, in ottimo stato di conservazione. This work comes from the second edition of Speculum Orbis Terrarum, published by his son Cornelis in 1591 after his death. De Jode was born in Nuremberg and worked as publisher and printer in Antwerp as fiere rival of Abraham Ortelius. Tyrone, Ireland, vellum crinkled and affected by damp, a rather sad copy, but at least the text of the second item is clean and complete. The sixteenth­century theologian Christophorus Cornerus (1518­1594) was Doctor of Theology and Professor of Theology at Frankfurt on the Oder. There he was regarded as the "Eye of the University", and was among the most respected theologians of his time. He wrote several commentaries on portions of the bible, a treatment of Aristotelian logic, and was one of the creators of the Formula of Concord, the formulation and presentation of which took place through 1576 and 1577, i. e. immediately prior to the publication of the 1578 editions offered here. Cornerus's Cantica was a banned book, place by the Catholic church placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.

Frans HOGENBERG (1535-1590), Abraham HOGENBERG (ca. 1578-1653). Köln, nach 1618. Kupferstich, von zwei Platten gedruckter Einblattdruck (Porträtmedaillon, Rahmenornamentik), Blatt: 29,5 x 36 cm, Darstellung: 21,5 x 28 cm; sehr gut erhalten.
Sehr dekorativer Einblattdruck mit ovalem Porträtmedaillon Kaiser Ferdinand II. (1578-1637), umgeben von symbolisch-attributivem Ornamentschmuck. Ferdinand II. war ab 1619 bis zu seinem Tode Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. Seit 1590 Erzherzog von Innerösterreich, vereinte er nach und nach die Territorien der Habsburgermonarchie unter seiner Herrschaft. Bereits als Landesherr von Innerösterreich ab 1596 vertrat er einen Kurs des Absolutismus und der Gegenreformation. Diesem Kurs folgte er auch als König von Ungarn und Böhmen. Gegen ihn erhoben sich die böhmischen Stände, was zum Auslöser des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wurde. Seinen Anspruch gibt sein Wahlspruch „Legitime certantibus corona" (dem Kämpfer für die gerechte Sache gebührt die Krone) wieder, der auch im unteren Teil des Porträtmedaillons (in verkürzter Form) genannt wird. Die sehr dekorative, symmetrisch angelegte figürliche Rahmenornamentik besteht aus zwei doppelköpfigen Reichsadlern mit Reichsapfel und –krone (jeweils rechts und links des Porträtmedaillons), zwei Adlern mit Krone und gekreuzten Schwertern am Blattkopf sowie am Blattfuß verschiedenen Attributen des Glaubens (rechts: Bibel) und des Kampfes (links: Rüstungsteile und Waffen) sowie dem Abzeichen vom Orden des goldenen Vlieses. Das Blatt kann durch stilistische und technische Merkmale den Hogenberg’schen Einblattdrucken zugeschrieben werden. Bei dieser, auch als „Geschichtsblätter" bekannten Folge handelt es sich um etwa 470 Stichen zu Ereignissen und Schauplätzen der Zeitgeschichte ab 1558, die im Hogenberg’schen Verlag ab ca. 1560 herausgegeben … [Click Below for Full Description]

1578. La Geographia di Claudio Tolomeo curata da Gerard Mercator, è pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1578 a Colonia da Gottfried van Kempen. Successivamente, alla morte del Mercator, ci furono delle ristampe delle carte contenute nelle pubblicazioni di Jodoco Hondius e Petrus Bertius (1605 & 1619). La lastra viene utilizzata, molto dopo in realtà, per l'edizione della Geographia di François Alma, stampata tra Utrecht, Amsterdam e Leida nel 1695, 1698, 1704 (2 tirature) e 1730. LAl centro del foglio manca invece il ricco cartiglio con le allegorie dell'astronomia e della geografia, qui sostituito da uno più piccolo di forma ovale, decorato con foglie d'acanto. Published for the first time in 1578 in the Geographia by Mercator, this plate was late included in all the editions of Ptolemy/Mercator published in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Leyden untile 1740. Collaert, Cornelius Gale and others after Straet, together with an additional suite of 16 further engraved hunting plates by Straet et al., later full calf with spine gilt, paper repairs to lower margin of some plates at the end, occasional minor staining, very little spotting and finger soiling. A fine, very wide margined copy, rare with the title and all the plates present. ----Schwerdt II, 226; Thiebaud 856; see Hollstein IV, 173-188 (Collaert) and VII, 81, 452-527 (Galle) - First edition of ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HUNTING BOOKS EVER PUBLISHED, containing an extra suite of 16 plates. Straet... was born in Bruges, but did most of his work in Italy. He was principally a designer of cartoons for tapestries, and there are very few of his pictures in existence. From 1553-1571 he was employed by the Duke Cosimo de'Medici in Florence, who commissioned him to make a number of designs for tapestries, representing fowling, fishing and hunting scenes, for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano.
