Johann Brenz (1499-1570) was a German reformer. He was appointed minister of the Collegiate Church of Stuttgart in 1553, and is said to have been the first exponent of the Reformation there. In the controversies between Zwingli and Luther, he took the side of the latter, and with others wrote the famous Syngramma Suevicum (1525). He was a writer of great ability and popularity. One of his teachings was that the body of the Lord is everywhere present; hence his followers were called 'Ubiquitarians.')".

Florence: Giunta, 1578. Second and Best Edition, Greatly Enlarged (first: 1569) of the first important book on the astrolabe in the Italian language. The author was mathematician, astronomer, and cosmographer to Cosimo I de? Medici until the latter?s death in 1574. In 1580 he was called to Rome by Pope Gregory XIII to work on reforming the calendar. His major works included the construction of an astronomical quadrant and an equinoctial armillary on the façade of the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, a large gnomon in the church of San Petronio in Bologna, and a meridian inside the Torre de? Veneti at the Vatican. Newly added in this edition are descriptions of nine other astronomical instruments, all illustrated with woodcuts, including the armillary spheres of Ptolemy, the diptric of Hipparchus, the astronomical gnomon, and the vertical anemoscope, an instrument for showing the direction of the wind. Danti also gives an account of how he was able to observe the vernal equinox of 1574 using the equinoctial armillary which he constructed on the façade of the church of Santa Maria Novella, therely correcting the discrepancy between the length of the year according to the Julian calendar and the true course of the sun.         Difesa della Citta di Firenze, et de i Fiorentini. Contra le calunnie & maledicente de maligni. Composta da Paolo Mini Fiorentino Medico & Filosofo

Appresso Filippo Tinghi [for 1578]. First edition.. Edges somewhat rubbed; hinges starting at the head and foot, but sound; attractive copy.. BMC (Italian Books) 313; Graesse, IV, page 533. Lozzi, Bibliotheca Istorica I: 1885; Moroni, II, page 83. Small 8vo, 18th century mottled calf, red morocco label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. The first book of Paolo Mini, a Florentine physician and philosopher of the late 16th century who published four books on the glories of Florence--including one on the wines of Tuscany. The work is a rhetorical defense of the honor of the City and its citizens against the calumnies pronounced on them since the days of Dante Alighieri. Mini summarizes the history of Florence, its honorable customs and good deeds, and its many great men, including a catalogue of artists and writers. The book concludes with a congratulatory letter, dated January 24, 1578, by Francisco Giuntini (1522-1590), a celebrated friar, theologian, and astrologer who had long been resident in Lyon, and with a concluding sonnet by Mini. All of Mini's books are uncommon. OCLC records ten copies of this one, eight in the United States and two in Italy. Despite its copious information on Renaissance Florence, the work seems to be little-known.

Unobtrusive contemporary ink signature on titlepage, very occasional contemporary manuscript annotations, trimmed closely at top margin, not affecting text, moderate tanning. A good copy. First Latin edition of Benzoni's important early account of the New World, translated from the first edition printed in Italian in 1565. Benzoni's history is the first significant work on the Americas based on firsthand observations by a non-Spaniard, and was one of the most widely disseminated texts of its day. This edition also includes the Latin translation of Nicolas Le Chailleux's DISCOURS DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA FLORIDE, first published in Dieppe in 1565, an account of the French expedition to Florida in the mid- 16th century. Born in Milan, Benzoni spent fourteen years travelling through the Americas, beginning in 1541. He was familiar with the Antilles, Guatemala, and the west coast of South America, and provides descriptions of these regions, as well as a history of the New World from the arrival of Columbus to the conquest of Peru. The work is also notable for containing an early account of the use of tobacco. Engaged in commerce, Benzoni quickly developed an intense enmity for the Spanish and their administration, and he treats them quite unfavorably in his text. He denounces the Spanish for their treatment of the Indians - in contrast, a good portion of the text describes Indian life before it became corrupted by European contact - and the author is also critical of the Spanish for their importation of slaves to America. "[The work] contains interesting details about the countries he visited, but abounds in errors and often in intentional misstatements. What Benzoni states about the Antilles is a clumsy rehash of Las Casas. His reports on the conquests of Mexico and Peru bristle with errors" - CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA. Despite these inaccuracies, the wide distribution of his book made Benzoni the single most influential figure in describing the New World to Europe in the mid- 16th century. His work went through many printings, though Arents notes that "it appears never to have been permitted to circulate in Spain." Its final and perhaps most influential version was as parts IV-VI of De Bry's GRAND VOYAGES, where its anti- Spanish slant helped to advance the "Black Legend" of Spanish depravity in the New World. One of the two Geneva issues of 1578, presumably this has precedence as it was issued without the errata leaf and has not been corrected. Although this issue is not mentioned in EUROPEAN AMERICANA, SABIN, or SERVIES, the JCB catalogue describes a second copy, uncorrected "with ' Genevae' on title, lacking the leaf of corrections." An important early first-hand account of the Americas, here in its first Latin edition. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 578/3 (ref). SABIN 4792 (ref). MEDINA (BHA) 250 (ref). ADAMS B685 (ref). JCB (3)I:268.       Florence, Giorgio Marescotti, 1578. - Woodcut devices of Marescotti on title-page and colophon leaf. Text in italic. Minor stains on title and in preliminary leaves. ---- FIRST EDITION of this extended diatribe against the ill-mannered and ill-bred common folk, demonstrating by reverse example the qualities that gentlemen should display. Aldana later revised this work and translated it into Spanish, publishing it in 1591 under the title @Invectiva contra el vulgo y su maledicencia.Born in Valencia, Aldana first entered the service of the Medici family, later moving to Milan to serve the Grand Constable Velasco. Although Aldana published two volumes of his own sonnets, he is perhaps better known for posthumously editing the poems of his brother, Francisco de Aldana.---- Palau 6320. Antonio I, p. 256.         OPERA] CON L'ESPOSITIONI DI CHRISTOFORO LANDINO, et D'Alessandro Vellutello.

Venice Appresso Gio. Battista, & Gio. Bernardo Sessa, fratelli 1578 - Second issuance of the first edition with a portrait of Dante. With a fine woodcut title page and 96 woodcut illustrations, including three full-page, 77 large cuts in the text, and numerous head- and tailpieces. Printer's woodcut device on the final leaf. Folio (320 x 218 mm), in a binding of handsome contemporary antique Italian vellum over boards. Original calligraphic titling on the spine panel in Renaissance style. [28 ff.), 163, [4 ff.], 164-393. A copy in a pleasing state of preservation. The text leaves are crisp quite clean, with just a few normal blemishes here and there. Some typical toning to a few of the quires as is normal with the printing of this book. Only the most occasional of the usual spotting of staining. Dante portrait outlined in pen. RARE 1596 EDITION OF THIS HISTORIC PRINTING OF ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS IN THE MIND OF MAN. This is the highly important edition of Dante edited by Francisco Sansovino, incorporating two commentaries: that of Christoforo Landino, which first appeared in the Florentine edition of 1481, and the noteworthy commentary of Alessandro Velutello, first published at Venice in 1544. The volume includes extensive introductory matter by all three commentators, and a running commentary that virtually overwhelms the poem itself. The woodcuts in this edition are taken from those in Velutello's edition of 1544 and represent a departure, both iconographically and stylistically, from those in the Brescia, 1487 edition--they appear more accomplished and more confident in execution. Francesco Sansovino recovered Vellutello’s commentary, never printed in Italy again until this time (except for a Lyonese reprint of 1551). This edition, printed here first in 1564, is very important because it is richly illustrated with many woodcuts taken from the edition of 1544 printed by Marcolini. The portrait of Dante on the title-page, inspired in Vasari’s tradition, is very famous and this edition is in fact commonly know as ‘of the big nose’. The sources of the portrait have probably to be found in two paintings by Vasari, now at the Oriel College of Oxford and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Cleveland. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rare and important early history of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, by Hernán Cortés' private chaplain, and the first edition of Thomas Nicholls' first English translation. Francisco López de Gómara (c. 1511-1566) never actually visited the New World, but through his close acquaintance with Cortés and leading conquistadors he had unparalleled access to first-hand testimony and documentary sources. His La conquista de Mexico, the second part of a more ambitious Historia general de las Indias, was first published in 1553. It was a popular work, translated into many languages - including an early rendering into Nahuatl, an indigenous language of the conquered Aztec Empire. The present English edition, dedicated to Sir Francis Walsingham, was translated from the Italian version of Agostino de Cravaliz. Some contemporaries accused the work of inaccuracy, unjustifiable sanitisation and aggrandisation of Cortés' role. It was perhaps for this reason that Prince Philip (later Philip II of Spain) quickly ordered all the copies of the work that could be found to be gathered in, and imposed a heavy fine on anyone who should reprint it. This proscription was rescinded in 1727 through the efforts of Don Andreas Gonzalez Martial, who included Gómara's work in his collection of early historians of the New World. Although López de Gómara's reliability may be called into question, his works nevertheless remain a valuable and oft-cited record of the conquista. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TRACTADO DE LAS DROGAS, Y MEDICINAS DE LAS INDIAS ORIENTALES, CON SUS PLANTAS DEBUXADAS AL BIVO POR CHRISTOVAL ACOSTA MEDICO Y CIRUJANO QUE LAS VIO OCULARMENTE.

      - 12 hh.+448 pp.+38 pp.+1 h.

Small quarto, title in architectural woodcut border incorporating the coat-of-arms of the city of Burgos, woodcut portrait of the author, and 44 full-page woodcuts of plants and two of elephants; discreet stamp in lower right margin of title; faint waterstain in upper margin of first few leaves; some leaves lightly browned, occasional marginal foxing; overall a good, fresh copy in contemporary limp vellum, the binding itself stained and loose but unsophisticated; quarter morocco case. The natural pharmacy of the East Indies. Drugs, herbs and spices of the East Indies: first edition of this influential herbal, important for disseminating botanical and pharmaceutical knowledge of recently discovered species from newly discovered lands, particularly in the East Indies. The handsome woodcuts, largely taken from drawings made by the author "in the field", illustrate many species from the East relatively unknown in Europe at the time, including ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, mace, aloes, tamarind, cloves and china root - all of which became increasingly important commodities on the trade routes. The depictions of the elephant are the earliest representations of the animal in a scientific (rather than an antiquarian or festival) publication (Lach). A physician from Portuguese Mozambique, Acosta (c. 1515-1580) accompanied the Portuguese viceroy to Goa, and also travelled to Persia and China. His book was reprinted in Spanish in 1582 and 1596, and incorporated into the many botanical compilations by L'Ecluse and others which followed. He makes some notable attempts at comparative botany, in which the characteristics of a species known in both Asia and America are contrasted. As Colmeiro and other authorities point out, some of Acosta's material derives directly from Orta's Colloquios dos Simples e Drogas he Cousas Medicinais da India (Goa, 1563), but Acosta substantially clarified and augmented the earlier work, which anyway had no illustrations and was badly organised and poorly printed.

Quibus accessit index locupletissimus, recens collectus.

Lyon, Stephan Michael, 1578. - 2 Tle. in 1 Bd. (16 Bl.), 976 Spalten - (5 Bl.), Spalten 3-1578, 1 w. Bl., 95 Bl. Index. Folio. - Hoffmann I, 300; Index Aureliensis 108.629; vgl.

I edizione in latino contemporanea a quella in tedesco.
