Peplus Italiae.. Opus, in quo illustres viri Grammatici, Oratores, Historici, Poëtæ, Mathematici, Philosophy, Medici, Iureconsulti (quodquot trecentis ab hinc annis tota Italia floruerunt) eorumque patriæ, professiones, & litterarum monumenta tum carmine tum soluta oratione recensetur.

Revard, Joannes Mattheus Toscanus and the limits of Italian Humanism, in: "Confini dell'umanesimo letterario. Studi in onore di Francesco Tateo"?, Roma, 2003, pp. 1165 - 1176).Bibliothèque Nationale Paris, FRBNF31482550, BMC, French Books, p. 423, G.H.         Opusculum Raymundinum de Auditu Kabbalistico sive ad Omnes Scientias Introductorium

Paris: Aegidius Gorbinus, 1578. - A Remarkable Survival of Three Books by Ramón Lull - 'Doctor Illuminatus'One of Athanius Kircher's Greatest InfluencesLULL, Ramón. Opusculum Raymundinum de auditu Kabbalistico sive ad omnes Scientias introductorium. Incipit libellus de Kabbalistico auditu in via Raymundi Lullii. Paris: Apud Aegidium Gorbinum 1578. Twelvemo (4 3/8 x 3 1/8 inches; 111 x 80 mm.). 82 [i.e. 80] leaves (A8-K8). Woodcut printer's device on title (Renouard no. 376). Folding table and two woodcuts in the text, and five plates with woodcut diagrams including one with a volvelle with two moving parts. Title-page with the German Jesuit library stamps of "Domus Bonnensis" and "Bibl.script".A fine copy of a rare and important work which includes among its five plates a volvelle mounted with its two movable parts still present.Third Edition, the previous two appeared in 1518 and 1538 in Venice, all of which are very rare. "How successful was the thesis of 'De auditu kabbalistico' in the 16th and 17th centuries, could be shown by the impressive reception of this treatise, which ranges from about Giordano Bruno, Claude Duret, Johann Heinrich Alsted and Athanasius Kircher up to Leibniz" (G. Kurz [ed], Meditation und Erinnerung in der Frühen Neuzeit, p 115; trans.). This text has found an important place in the body of Kabbalistic texts with its attribution to Ramón Lull (1232-1316). However there is evidence that this is the work of a Renaissance physician and Kabbalist scholar when one goes back to the original 1518 edition. Pietro Mainardi, born about 1456, obtained his doctorate at the University of Ferrara in 1490 and went on to teach medicine there until 1527. He was definitely a great scholar of Lull and while composing this work he drew heavily from Lull's Ars Brevis and inserted kabbalistic references and added, very effectively, some of his own. However he did not sign the work. He apparently wished to remain anonymous as the author so his name appears only in the colophon of the 1518 edition as the editor and publisher. Thus in later editions, with different publishers and colophons the work became Opusculum Raymundinum. The work definitely has very scholarly content and a form so similar as to be considered a work of Lull and would from then on be ascribed to him. Its great success is attested by several documents and printed texts in which quotations from the present work (De auditu) would mingle with the Kabbalistic text collections of Lull.In addition, this is the first book that deepens and broadens the ars combinatorial method invented by Lull through which, by using diagrams, figures, or words, you can connect, in a sort of mechanical logic, information in each field to get closer to universal knowledge as well as to be able to memorize it. Many later scientists and philosophers (Bruno, Agrippa, Kircher, Alsted, Leibniz and his followers) or writers (Roussel, Raymond Queneau, Perec, Calvino, Eco ) were interested in the theories expressed here.Palau 143.864; Duveen 370; Caillet 6846; E. Rogent & E. Duràn, Bibl. de les impressions lul-lianes, (Barcelona, 1927), no 120; C. Ottaviano, Lull’s L’ars compendiosa, (1930) p. 97, no. 17 (under "E Écrits apocryphes.").         Opera omnia in duos tomos distincta.

Socinus, a jurist-theologian from Siena, first met with Polish Antitrinitarians in 1578. He moved to Krakow in 1580 and devoted the rest of his life to fostering a cohesive religious movement that denied the Holy Trinity based on rational exegesis of Scripture. While Socinianism and the Radical Reformation won many followers, Socinus (Fausto Sozzini, 1539-1604) was also attacked -- in writing and, in 1594 and 1598, on the street! => These are the first two volumes of the only edition, first issue, of the first and most important collection of Socinian documents. The title-page, table of contents, and preface to the first volume introduce and illuminate the series Bibliotheca fratrum polonorum as a whole, that having comprised ten tomes published clandestinely ca. 1665-92 by the Polish Brethren called Unitarians. The near-complete works of Socinus himself, leading that parade of texts, occupy these first two, which were actually published three years after vols. III-V (by Johann Crell and Jonasz Szlichtyng), all with => false imprints. Excerpts of Socinus's => acrid debates with protagonists of the Reformation on baptism, redemption, (im)mortality, and the nature of Christ pervade the present volumes. A chapter of letters to friends (vol. I) includes exchanges not only with the founder of the Transylvanian Unitarian Church Francis Dávid and a Polish noblewoman named Sophia Siemichovia, but also Marcello Squarcialupi, Matthäus Radecke, Jan Niemojewski, Johannes Völkel, and Christophorus Ostorodt, among others. The minister-turned-printer Kuyper (1629-91) produced only Socinian works in the decade 1663-73, many edited by Andreas Wissowatius, Socinus's grandson who had an influential hand in the present opera. The printer Samuel Przypkowski, whose shop produced earlier volumes in the series of which these are a part, contributed the brief biography of Socinus here; and he has graced the text with refined tailpieces, large initials against a floriated background, and woodcut devices on the sectional titles (some initialed "HB" for printer Hendrick Boom). There are occasional Hebrew references in vol. II. Provenance: Early inscription "Middeldorpf" on front fly-leaf; bookplate and stamp of Rochester Theological Seminary (later the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School). Deaccessioned 2005. Evidence of readership: Sparse ink annotations in a contemporary hand; underlining throughout, heavy in quires R-S and Nnn-Ppp in vol. I.

London: Henrye Bynneman & Francis Coldock, [1578]. VERY RARE First Edition. Title within elaborate historiated woodcut border of military themes, printed in black letter, large engraved historiated initials throughout, head and tail pieces. Small 4to (7.5x5.75 inches approx.), bound in contemporary limp vellum, in a cloth folding case with morocco label lettered in gilt. [ii], 337, [3] pp. The original contemporary vellum binding is rather worn and the upper portion of the front cover is defective, missing a section of the vellum. The text has some expected aging, primarily at the prelims, small hole in title repaired from the verso causing very slight loss to border RARE, POLEMON'S ANTHOLOGY OF EUROPEAN BATTLES ACCRUED AND TRANSLATED FROM CONTINENTAL AUTHORS SUCH AS JOVIUS, GUICCIARDINI AND NATALIS COMES. OCLC list only 8 copies in institutional holdings, we are aware of no other copy currently available. In total Polemon's collection of descriptions from various sources covers over 40 major battles fought in Great Britain, on the Continent, and in the eastern Mediterranean, from Tarro in 1495 to Lepanto in 1572. The translation from Guicciardini is the earliest of any part of his body of work to be done into English. Polemon's endeavor was quite popular, enough so to warrant a continuation in 1587. His style of research, along with writing for an audience of wealthy and erudite and nonmilitary people had an impact on Tudor historical thought which lasted long afterwards.

THE PLEASANT HISTORIE OF THE CONQUEST OF THE WEAST [sic] INDIA, NOW CALLED NEW SPAYNE, ACHIEVED BY THE WORTHY PRINCE HERNANDO CORTES, MARQUES OF THE VALLEY OF HUAXACAC...

London: Henry Bynneman, 1578. Woodcut vignette on titlepage, woodcut initials (several historiated). Small quarto. 19th-century black morocco, gilt, spine gilt extra, a.e.g., gilt inner dentelles. Extremities rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Foredge of titlepage neatly remargined. Very good. The first English edition of one of the most important early chronicles of the Spanish conquest of the New World, and one of the two chief accounts of CortÈs' conquest of Mexico, the other being provided by Bernal Diaz. It is one of a handful of English language publications about the New World to appear in the 16th century, and an attractively printed work, with several large woodcut initials. Lopez de Gomara was Cortes' secretary for a number of years, and made use of his unparalleled opportunity to gather information from the primary source relating to the extraordinary exploits surrounding the overthrow of the Aztec empire. "Contains the first printed accounts of the Cortes expeditions to California, the expeditions of Francisco Ulloa, Marcos de Niza, Coronado, the subsidiary expeditions resulting from the last, and the voyage of Cabrillo" - Wagner. The work was first published in Zaragosa in 1552, and quickly went through a number of editions in Spain, Italy, and the Low Countries.         ADRIATIC: TAB V. EUROPAE IN QUA RAETIA, PANNONIA, NORICUM, LIBURNIA, DALMATIA, CUM ITALIAE PARTE.

      - Map with highly decorative full colour shows the historical regions and towns of what is now Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and much of Southern Germany. It depicts the Ancient Roman conception of the region as proscribed by Claudius Ptolemy (c. 150 AD), and while at first not entirely familiar to the modern viewer, upon closer examination, the map takes one on a fascinating historical journey. The map embraces the entire upper Danube Basin, from the river’s source in the Black Forest down to a point beyond Belgrade, and gives a detailed rendering of the territory between the Danube and the Alps (in the west) and the river and the Adriatic Sea (in the east). Names of the various Roman provinces are labelled, as are the locations of numerous settlements, some of which occupy the sites of modern cities. Some notable locations include: ‘Augusta’ (Augsburg), ‘Emona’ (Ljubljana), ‘Tergestum’ (Trieste), ‘Julio Bona’ (Vindobona, modern Vienna), ‘Taururum’ (modern Belgrade) and ‘Salona Colonia’ (near modern Split). The Alps, which merge into the Balkans’ Dinaric Alps, move across the map in a brilliantly engraved chain. Much of Italy is shown in silhouette, labelling both Ancient Roman cities, such as ‘Roma’ (Rome) and ‘Mediolanum (Milan) and modern cities that were prominent during the time in which present map was published, including ‘Venetia’ (Venice) and ‘Pisa’ (Pisa). The map was published in Claudii Ptolemaei's Atlas Tabulae geographicae Orbis Terrarum, an Atlas based on ancient maps by Claudius Ptolemy. The Atlas was first published in 1578 and re-published until the early 18th century.

The English translation was prepared by Thomas Nicholas, who abridged the original. A vital Elizabethan Americanum. European Americana 578/41; Wagner Spanish Southwest, 2pp; Sabin 27751; Church 123; STC 16807; Palau 141184; Hill 1037 (2nd Ed).

De visibili monarchia ecclesiae, libri VIII (8)

Apud Ioannem Foulerum; Antwerp: John Fowler, 1578. Hardcover. Good. Folio, 33 cm. Old Vellum binding. Hand written spine label. Soiled. Collated: [12], 808, [11] pages. Catholic seminary and ownership stamp on title. Internally, some browning, minor dampstaining, see our pictures. Title written in a fine, old hand at bottom edge. 2nd edition of Sanders’ 1571 treatise on the divine basis of papal monarchy. Shaaber S22. Nicholas Sanders (1530-81) was a counter-revolutionary English Catholic theologian. "Universally acclaimed by the Catholics and all but won for its author a cardinal's hat. By the Protestants it was recognised as a serious threat to their intellectual position, and Sir William Cecil himself arranged for its refutation." - Milward. Per DNB: "The book [De visibili monarchia ecclesiae] is historically valuable as containing the first attempt to compile a descriptive list of the clergy and principal laity who suffered exile, imprisonment, or other losses for recusancy. The strong ultramontane position maintained by him throughout the work, his marked approval of the insurrection of 1569, and of the bull of deposition, with his panegyrics of Dr. Story, Felton, and others who had died refusing allegiance to the queen, provoked the bitterest hostility in England, and the book became subsequently a source of dangerous questionings and torments to captured priests (BURGHLEY, Execution of Justice, sig. E, ii.; ALLEN, Defence, pp. 61â€?"5; BUTLER, Memoirs, i. 425). Sanders subsequently was an active participant in Papal attempts to attack England via Ireland the Second Desmond Rebellion. Sanders lost his life in Ireland after the military defeat at Smerwick. His accounts remain a significant basis of the Catholic narrative of the English reformation and the suffering of English Catholics. Full title: De visibili monarchia ecclesiae, libri VIII. Si quid praeterea difficile & scopulosum vel in Pontificum Romanorum historia, vel in conciliorum generalium ratione accidit idipsum ex propositio discutitur & examinatur.
