Ascham, Roger
London: Printed by Iohn Daye, 1570. FIRST EDITION, 4to, ff. [iii], 33. Nineteenth-century half sheep, marbled boards, red morocco label to spine. Final leaf of text cropped at fore-margin, outer pages dust-soiled, a bit of soiling elsewhere as well. Extremities rubbed, small scrapes to spine. Armorial bookplate of the North Library at Shirburn Castle to front pastedown, occasional doodles in the margins in an early hand (cropped), including several complete alphabets. The Macclesfield copy of Roger Ascham's second published work, 'a pioneering essay in pragmatic political history in which the subject matter was ordered not chronologically but according to the author's understanding of its importance judged in terms of cause and effect, and which certainly provided instructive lessons' (ODNB). Ascham (1514-1568) was secretary to the ambassador to the court of Charles V in the early 1550s and this is a fragment of the history he was keeping at the time though, like all his other writings, it was only published posthumously. 'Although now rarely read, Ascham's incomplete 'A Report and Discouse of the State of Germany'...stands as a pioneering example of early English responses to the new methods of continental historiography and as an enlightened precursor for the English histories of Bacon and Camden' (Hadfield, Shakespeare and Renaissance Europe', p. 72). ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM
Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova DescriptioAccording to Burden: "One of the most famous and esily recognised maps of America, and one that is both functional as well as decorative". An important map because of it's influence on the European perceptions of America. When the map was first published by Abraham Ortelius at Antwerp in 1570, it was the best map of the Americas available. It was in fact the first of it's kind to achieve wide circulation through an atlas. Lower California is correctly shown as a peninsula and America is separated from Asia in the northwest. A strategically placed cartouche hides the complete lack of the southern waters of the Pacific. Second state of first plate with Latin text on verso. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 36,6 x 50,7 cm. Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
"La carta del Regno di Napoli - inserita in tutte le edizioni del ""Theatrum Orbis Terrarum"" di Ortelius, a partire dalla prima del 1570 - deriva dalla carta di Pirro Ligorio edita a Roma da Michele Tramezino nel 1558 e successivamente ristampata dal De Cavalleris, sempre a Roma. Edizione con testo francese al verso. Incisione in rame, lievissime ossidazioni, per il resto in perfette condizioni." This is a beautiful map of southern Italy with north oriented to the left as identified by the handsome compass rose. The map is filled with detail and based on the work of Pirro Ligorio who was best known as an architect involved in the building of St. Peter's in Rome. The title is contained in a flowing banner and a fine sailing ship further adorns the map.

LACTANTIUS
1570 Lactantius Divine Institutes Christian Apologetics Pagan FLAT EARTH Theory Lactantius was a 3rd-century early Christian author who is remembered primarily for his work ‘Institutionum Divinae’, an important treatise written to defend Christian truths against pagans. Not only was the content important to Christian apologists, the style in which it was written gives a proper example of 4th-century Christian thought; and while this 1570 edition has all the characteristics of a 16th-century printing, ‘Institutionum Divinae’ is known to be the first book published with a printing date in Italy (1465 ed). While this work appears to be just a Christian apology, it also includes elements of civil law, including Lactantius’s condemning the round earth theory, a view that Copernicus would refute in his 16th-century works. de Jode, Gerard (1509 - 1591)
Rare antique map of Great Britain, 1570 (- 1578).- Gerard de Jode Antwerp 1570 (-1578).- orig. hand coloured copper engraved antique map in a dark wooden frame with gold inset and black museums quality mount board with gold bevel, double glazed. Latin text on verso. frame 66 x 81 cm, map 39 x 55 cm. Engraved and published by Gerard de Jode (1509 - 1591), from 'Speculum Geographicum Totius Germaniae Imperium Representans.', Antwerp, 1570 (-1578).- We are very proud to be able to offer this stunning and rather rare map for sale. De Jode aimed at competing with Ortelius' atlas 'Theatrum.' but by the time he had completed his 2-volume work, Ortelius' atlas had become too popular. Though these days, scholars and map enthusiasts consider de Jode's maps to be far superior, 'Speculum Geographicum.' never sold well at its time and was only re-issued once in 1593 in 'Speculum Orbis Terrae.' by de Jode's son Cornelis, again with little success. - As there are only 3 editions of this atlas, de Jode maps are rarely found and always command a high price. In addition, this map seems to be an intermediate state between the first and second edition according to Shirley (British Isles), #85 as it shows text on verso (which is not in 1570 edition) and lacks 'Cum privilegio' as in the 1578 edition. Pagination on verso reads 'XXVI' as in second edition.- This is one of the most beautifully printed maps of Great Britain in stunning original colour in excellent condition apart from additional printer's creases throughout. The map is orientated to the East it has been speculated that this is eithe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ciceronian sources notably excluded. COLLATION NOTES: Compares to Adams C-2486 except in content sequence and collation. Simply put, our copy arranges Latin authors first and Greek authors last, whereas Adams and OCLC 23622668 describe copies that put Greek Authors first. Our table of contents reflects the "Greek first" collation, making it seem at first inspection to be a later bindery arrangement. Not so. A half title introducing the Greek author section at 2A1r is signed and printed conjugate with 2A4 which contains the Greek author material. GRAFTON, RICHARD
London: In aedibus Richardi Tottyll, 1570. Fourth Edition. This is a rare copy of a condensed chronicle of English history from the rule of King Brute in 1108 B.C. through 1570, the 12th year of the reign of Elizabeth I. There were several such chronicles competing on the market in the second half of the 16th century, with Grafton's and one by John Stow foremost among them. The present text was compiled by Grafton while he was in prison for printing a proclamation on Lady Jane Grey's accession to the throne in which he styled himself "printer to the Queen"; the work was first published by his son-in-law Richard Tottell in 1562. DNB considers it notable for Grafton's description of the accession of Queen Elizabeth, her welcome in London, and the pageants held along the route—from the Tower to Westminster—which Grafton helped to oversee. A printer and historian, Grafton (1506/7-73) enjoyed the patronage of Thomas Cranmer, and was instrumental in the financing and publication of the Matthews Bible of 1537 and the Great Bible of 1539. He and his associate Edward Whitchurch printed a 1540 edition of the Great Bible with an introduction by Cranmer. Five editions of the "Abridgement" appeared between 1562 and 1572, and a two-volume "Chronicle at Large" was issued in 1569. Copies of all editions of the abridgement are uncommon, with RBH and ABPC finding just one copy of our edition sold at auction since 1984. That copy, with its boards detached, nevertheless brought a hammer price of £3,800 ($6,281), and this 34-year-old result suggests that our price is very reasonab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trevisan, Domenico, Venetian bailo in Istanbul (fl. mid-16th century).
Northern Italy, probably 1560/1570s. Folio (222 x 324 mm). Italian ms. on paper (incipit "S'io mi persuadessi"; explicit "debbo servir per sempre alla patria mia. Dixi"). 134 pp., final blank leaf. Modern unsophisticated paper wrappers. Near-contemporary manuscript copy of the 1554 relation to the Doge of Venice, by Domenico Trevisan, the returning bailo (resident ambassador) to Constantinople, about the Ottoman Empire and the duration of his station there. Much in the manner of present-day diplomatic cables and station reports, Trevisan gives an account of the ruling dynasty and the background of the various living or recently deceased family members to be reckoned with. He discusses the structure and hierarchy of the Ottoman administration, relations with foreign powers, events of foreign policy such as the ongoing Ottoman-Habsburg wars in Hungary, the weaponry of the army and navy (providing many new and vital details on the strength of the Ottoman galleys and their armaments, at a time when the Spanish-Italian fleet of Charles V under the command of Andrea Doria was suffering a series of successive defeats against the Turks), the tributes exacted from the various provinces of the Empire (departing in some details from the figures given by Alberi's edition), etc. - "The bailo's appointment usually lasted two years [. He] was obliged to send Venice information not only about politics and colonial affairs but also about the prices and quantity of the goods sold in local markets. A bailo was more important than a consul [.] The bailo in Istanbul began to deal more and more … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thus our variant is another issue and per … [Click Below for Full Description]
