Giovanni Francesco CAMOCIO (Attivo a Venezia tra 1558 - 1575)
THE RARE FIRST STATE. Plan of Margariti in Epirus, showing the fortress under siege by the Venetians in 1571, shortly before the Battle of Lepanto. In parallel to the IATO assembled in Rome and Venice, the Venetians continued to issue collections in the form of Isolario, expanded to contain plans and bird's-eye-views of towns and fortresses. Like the larger maps of The IATO these smaller ones were first issued for a loose sheet circulation, and then assembled in booklet form for interested customer. This developments suggested by a few surviving copies of a booklet first circulated with a varying number of contents, without title page or date of issue, and later with un undated title page and then with the contents more uniformly arranged and, finally supplied with an engraved consecutive numbering. The booklet usually pass … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Sehr seltenes blatt, früher kräftiger Abzug in sehr guter Erhaltung. Artist: Jode de Pieter ( - 1634 ) Antwerp; date: 1780 1570 - - technic: Copper print; condition: Very good; size (in cm): 16 x 24 - description: View of Quang- Cheu-Fu - vita of the artist: Gerard de Jode (1509?1591)Antwerp, was a cartographer, engraver and. In 1547 he was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke, and began his work as a publisher and printseller. He often printed the works of other cartographers including Gastaldi's map of the world in 1555, Jacob van Deventer's map of Brabant in 1558, Ortelius' eight sheet map of the world in 1564, and maps by Bartholomeus Musinus and Fernando Alvares Seco. His most outstanding work is a two volume atlas Speculum Orbis Terrarum published in 1578. It was aimed at competing with another atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelius, published eight years earlier in 1570. The competing atlas had become so popular by the time he finally published his own atlas however, that his version never sold well, despite his outstanding reputation. Only about a dozen examples have survived.Gerard de Jode made plans for another enlarged edition, which was uncompleted at his death in 1591. His son Cornelis de Jode took over and published the Speculum Orbis Terrae in 1593. This never sold well either. Scholars consider many of de Jode's maps to be superior to those of Ortelius, both in detail and style. In constructing his world map, HEMISPHERIUM AB AEQUINOCTIALI LINEA, AD CIRCULUM POLI ANTARCTICI, published in 1593, Gerard de Jode was strongly influenced by Guillaume Postel?s 1581 polar planisphère, Polo aptata Nova Charta Universi.Gerard de Jode was … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Ming city wall continued to serve until modern times, when it was pulled down and the 2nd Ring Road was built in its place. It is generally believed that Beijing was the largest city in the world for most of the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The first known church was constructed by Catholics in 1652 at the former site of Matteo Ricci's chapel; the modern Nantang Cathedral was later built upon the same site. The capture of Beijing by Li Zicheng's peasant army in 1644 ended the dynasty, but he and his Shun court abandoned the city without a fight when the Manchu army of Prince Dorgon arrived 40 days later. - vita of the artist: Gerard de Jode (1509?1591)Antwerp, was a cartographer, engraver and. Americae Sive Novi Orbis, Nova DescriptioAccording to Burden: "One of the most famous and esily recognised maps of America, and one that is both functional as well as decorative".An important map because of it's influence on the European perceptions of America. When the map was first published by Abraham Ortelius at Antwerp in 1570, it was the best map of the Americas available. It was in fact the first of it's kind to achieve wide circulation through an atlas. Lower California is correctly shown as a peninsula and America is separated from Asia in the northwest. A strategically placed cartouche hides the complete lack of the southern waters of the Pacific.Second state of first plate with Latin text on verso. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 36,6 x 50,7 cm. Ortelius, Abraham
Venice, Bolognino Zaltieri, 1570. 4to. (8), 176 pp. With woodcut printer's device on title page and several woodcut headpieces and initials. 18th century full vellum with giltstamped red spine label. In spite of the subtitle ("nuovamente mandate in luce"), this is the first edition of Ulloa's history of the Ottoman wars in Hungary, including an account of the 1566 Siege of Szigetvár. Though the battle resulted in an Ottoman victory, it halted the Ottoman advance on Vienna that year, and Vienna was not threatened again until 1683. "The Castilian-born Alfonso Ulloa was entrusted with various diplomatic missions by Emperor Maximilian as well as by King Philip II and thus had a first-hand knowledge of the events of the years 1566-1569. Disregarding the frequently panegyrical tone of the account, the book may still be used as a valuable historical source" (Göllner). Apponyi, on the other hand, cautions that "this is nothing but a reprint of Pietro Bizarri's 'Historia', published the previous year [. The book nothing to do with Ulloa's account of the events at Sziget published in his own 'Comentarios' in 1569: apparently, he found it easier to rip off Bizarri than himself .] Ulloa has the nerve to present this shameless piece of plagiarism to his patron with the most unctuous and swaggering phrases [.] Cautiously, Ulloa shied away only from copying certain personal accounts of Bizarri's, or rather from presenting these experiences of Bizarri's as his own; everything else is reproduced verbatim". - Title page shows some brownstaining, otherwise a clean copy in a pretty contemporar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, in perfette condizioni. Bibliografia: Zacharakis, A catalogue of printed maps of Greece, 1756; Tooley's, Dictionary of Mapmakers, vol. III, p. 313. Dimensioni 135x195. This very-rare loose-sheet map of Corfu carries at the lower right hand corner the date of the publication, 1570. Like the larger maps of The IATO these smaller ones were first issued for a loose sheet circulation, and then assembled in booklet form for interested customer. The island is shown surrounded by an armada of Venetian war ships. The map is oriented with south at the top and its shape is based on the Ferrando Bertelli map of Kerkyra (1564). Sometimes the map appear in the rare collection by Simone Pinargenti "Isole che son da Venetia nella Dalmatia et per tutto l'arcipelago fino a Costantinopoli" (1573). Nicolò Nelli (1530 ca - 1573) was venetian engraver of maps, portraits, religious subject and prints. He also traded in prints and published the works of Giovanni Battista Fontana and Giorgio Ghisi and had a business relationship with Bertelli en Zaltieri. Very … [Click Below for Full Description]
