CYPRIAN, Saint, Bishop of Carthage [ Caecilius Cyprianus ] )(200-258 A.D.). Cyprien.
apud Guillaume Morel, Paris, 1564. Folio [20p] 483p, 18pp index, Bound in early full vellum title inked in the spine. Nice copy, fresh and crisp paper. Beautiful imprint of Guillermo Morel the famous Parisian printer his classic works are always sought after for the quality of his impression in addition to his qualities as a commentator and editor. Saint Cyprian (Latin: Thaschus Cæcilius Cyprianus; c. 200 September 14, 258 AD)[ was bishop of Carthage and a notable Early Christian writer of Berber descent, many of whose Latin works are extant. He was born around the beginning of the 3rd century in North Africa, perhaps at Carthage, where he received a classical education. Soon after converting to Christianity, he became a bishop in 249. A controversial figure during his lifetime, his strong pastoral skills, firm conduct during the Novatianist heresy and outbreak of the plague, and eventual martyrdom at Carthage vindicated his reputation and proved his sanctity in the eyes of the Church. His skillful Latin rhetoric led to his being considered the pre-eminent Latin writer of Western Christianity until Jerome and Augustine. The Plague of Cyprian is named after him, owing to his description of it. Catalogue des livres rares et précieux, manuscrits et imprimés de la De Bure Théologie N102, Annales typographici . Uncommon Plantin Press. The Plantin Press at Antwerp was one of the focal centers of the fine printed book in the 16th century. Psalmorum bound with Proverbia, Ecclesiastes, et Cantica Canticorum Psalms, With Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) Together 2 volumes of books from the Old Testament bound in 1 each with title page. 90, (4), 124 leaves. Small 16mo., Contemporary gilt ruled calf with initials RS gilt on covers. All edges gilt. Christophe Plantin (ca 1520 - 1589) of Touraine was trained as a bookbinder. He fled from Paris where at least one printer had recently been burned at the stake for heresy, and went to Antwerp. There he bound books, became a citizen, and by 1555 began to print books, at first for distribution by other publishers. The city was already an established center of printing woodcuts, engravings and books. Plantin took on an assistant, Jan Moretus (Moerentorf), who read Latin and Greek and could write correspondence in several modern languages. He became Plantin's business manager, son-in-law and eventually his successor in the Plantin printing press. For over two hundred years the Plantin press had a monopoly, granted by the papacy, for the printing of liturgical formularies, including in Spain. In 1562, suspected of heresy, Plantin fled to France for two years. At an auction of his press, friends bought up his equipment on his behalf. After 1564, when Plantin set up again in a new shop at the sign of De Gulden Passer ("The Golden Compasses"), the printers mark of the House of Plantin. It often appeared in a vignette on the t … [Click Below for Full Description]

POPE PIUS IV (1499-1565)
[Antonio Blado], Rome. Very interesting Papal Bull, published the year following the conclusion of the Council of Trent, laying out the rules and regulations concerning potential teachers at and professors at Catholic institutions of learning. The concern for Catholic orthodoxy, in the face of the spread of Protestantism, is obviously at the forefront of this order, and the last section is dedicated to the tenets of the faith that Catholic professors must abide by - some which had recently been definitely and formally promulgated at Trent. Measures 31 x 21cm. 3 pages. Wood-cut emblems on first leaf. Loose as issued. A little bit grubby along the edges. Three similar editions of this bull printed in 1564; compare images in EDIT 16 CNCE 68840, 72851, and 42106. This edition is not in the Short-title catalogue of books printed in Italy and of Italian books printed in other countries from 1465 to 1600 now in the British Museum. I could locate only one copy of this title in United States' libraries, at UCLA's Italian collection. [Fumagalli, G. MEXIA, Pedro.
1564. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Pedro Mejia's most prolific and important work was "Silva de Varia Leccion" or A miscellany of Several Lessons. Over the course of the 16th-century, it reached over 120 editions in both Spanish and other languages, including this rare printing in Italian. It is an encyclopedia-type book that covers a mixture of subjects. The 'Silva' takes material from and imitates style of the "Noctes Atticae" of Aulus Gellius, "Saturnalia" of Macbrobius, and "Parallel Lives" of Plutarch. However, the most important works he drew from were those of Erasmus and "Pliny's "Natural History." The work indulges strange and curious phenomena and historical events, most notably those from famous sources.

Lopez de Gomara, Francisco.
per Giouanni Bonadio, In Venetia, 1564. Following the achievement of the conquest of Mexico, Cort?s did not know how to stop and rest on his laurels: He sought greater fame and honor and to do this embarked on several ill-conceived expeditions that added no luster to his name, and when it became clear that the king was not going to make him a viceroy, the slide down the slope was an unpleasant one. Still striving, he enlisted his chaplain Francisco L?pez de G?mara to write a history of the New World that would include a laudatory biography. The Historia general de las Indias (first published in 1552) is divided into two parts which stand on their own although clearly written as two parts of a whole. Part I is a history of events concerning the discovery and conquests of the New World exclusive of those involving Cort?s. Part II is entirely dedicated to the telling of Cort?s's role in the conquest of Mexico and subsequent discoveries. In this Italian translation from the pen of Agostino di Cravaliz, L?pez's "all-Cort?s" volume stands as part III of the three-volume Historia, delle nuove Indie Occidentali, with parts I and II being translations of Cieza de Leon's Historia, over Cronica del gran regno del Peru and the previously mentioned part I of G?mara's Historia general de las Indias. The text here is printed in italic type except the capitals, which are roman. The title-page is printed in roman and italic and has the woodcut printer's device. 8vo. [8], 354 of 356 ff. (lacking fol. 1 and final blank). Alden & Landis 564/25; Sabin 27741; Medina, BHA, 159n; Wagner, Spanish S … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.-C.) était un philosophe grec et scientifique.
