Giovanni Andrea GILIO
in Venetia, appresso Francesco de' Franceschi, 1563.

POMPE VAN MEERDERVOORT, Johan Lidius Cathrinus.
- Cordier, Japonica, col. 588; Landwehr, Coloured Plates 395; Lipperheide 1563; Tiele, Bibl. 873. First edition of a rare and famous account of the Japanese Empire during the years in which Japan slowly and cautiously opened up to the West. It pays particular attention to the relations between Japan and the European nations from the 15th century to the 1850s, when Japan concluded treaties with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, England and the United States. It was written by the Dutch government physician at Japan, Jhr. Johan L.C. Pompe van Meerdervoort (1829-1908), who lived in Japan for more then five years. The beautiful colour plates show Japanese costumes. It concludes with the complete texts of the treaties concluded by Japan after Perry's expedition: with the United States of America (March 1854), with Great Britain (October 1854), and finally with the Kingdom of the Netherlands (November 1855 and August 1858). The work is dedicated to the Japanese Emperor Minamoto IJemotsi. With stamps from the Imperial Austrian naval library and another naval library, spines with manuscript shelfmark-labels. First frontispiece detached and reattached, front flyleaves pasted down, some sewing supports of 2nd volume broken. Spines faded, corners bumped, otherwise in good condition.

Frontespizio riprodotto in xerocopia su carta antica. Esemplare lavato. Opuscula anatomica. Venetijs, Vincentius Luchinus excudebat, 1564. Testo di estrema importanza cfr.: Shklar G, Chernin D. "Eustachio and Libellus de dentibus the first book devoted to the structure and function of the teeth". J Hist Dent., 2000. The Becker Medical Library: "Although it was published by the Venetian printer Vincenzo Luchino as the second part of Eustachi's composite work Opuscula Anatomica, the Dentibus bears its own separate title page dated 1563 and has its own pagination and signatures, indicating that it may have also been published separately." e ancora: "Eustachi is credited with being the first anatomist to study the teeth in detail. He based his work on the dissection of fetuses and stillborn infants, and in the Dentibus he described the first and second dentitions, pointed out that the crowns of teeth were composed of two separate layers (enamel over dentin), and provided a clear description of the dental pulp and root canal. He also set out to explain how teeth develop, and offered suggestions on how to treat various dental diseases".

Lipsiae [Leipzig], Voegel, [1563]. Small, thick 4to (15.2 x 10.0 x 5.5 cm). 1,015, [vi] pp., one larger, folded printed chart. Contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with gilt vignettes; boards with elaborate tooling, gilt-stamping, and brass clasps.= An important early treatise on the art of dialectics, written by the Polish theologist, filologist, humanist, and rector of the Academy of Krakow, Jakob, or Jacub, Górski (Jacobus Gorscius, ca. 1525-1595). "Górski was an early Polish representative of Stoicism. He wrote a famous Dialectic (1563) and many works in grammar, rhetoric, theology and sociology. A professor at Kraków University, he was an erudite man whose Dialectic gives evidence of extensive acquaintance with new currents and authors, but he was more erudite than independent as a thinker. He tended to eclecticism and sought to reconcile the Stoics with Aristotle" (Wikipedia). Rare. OCLC records less than ten copies outside Poland, and none outside northern Europe. We have found no auction records during the last 50 years. Binding rubbed, corners more so. Clasps wanting. A tear in the folded chart, otherwise internally a very good, clean copy.

Commendone, Giovanni Francesco, cardinal (1524-1584).
1563. Oblong 12mo. 1 p. A catchphrase of radical Lutheranism, apparently quoted ironically by the Cardinal to expose the extremism of his opponents: "Incipit hareticus fieri, qui scripta Lutheri / Carpit, et infernum, ni resipiscat, adit" ("He who attacks Luther oversteps the threshold of heresy, and, unless he repents, goes to hell"). The Strasbourg Protestant theologian and Hebrew scholar Tobias Speccer (1563-1622) quoted the lines (in a slightly more extensive version, with variation) in his essay, "De vera Iesu Christi Ecclesia & Pontificia Romana opposita", published in 1617 in an academic volume celebrating the centenary of the Ninety-Five Theses, the primary catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. In this context, they give evidence of the extreme reverence Luther enjoyed among his disciples more than seven decades after his death. - Cardinal Commendone had performed various papal missions to the courts of Protestant rulers. The numerous letters which he wrote during his 1560/61 mission to Germany to invite the Catholic and Protestant Estates to the re-opened Council of Trent present a picture of the ecclesiastical conditions in the country during those times. - Some worming. 18th-century authentification note ("Autographum Cardinalis Commendone") in red ink at the foot of the clipped page.
