Artomedes, Sebastian:
excudebat Iohannes Crato [Johann I Krafft] [1568]., Vitebergae [Wittenberg], 1563. 2 works in 1 vol., small 4to., pp. [20]; [8]. Typographical ornament to first title-page; second title-page with woodcut of Christ entering Jerusalem, with ornamental border. Light browning, very good copies in eighteenth-cent. buff paper boards, green bookplate of Christian Fiedrich Eberhard (1753-1818), lawyer (and official at the University of Leipzig; cf. ProvenienzWiki). First title-page with donation inscription (cropped) from author to one Joannes Baptista; second has in early stamped lettering the capital letters B, C, A, and I. Very good copies of two rare neo-Latin works by the poet and Lutheran preacher Sebastian Artomedes (1544-1602), the first a poem on the destruction of Jerusalem, and the second on Christ?s arrival in the same city. Both date from around the author?s time as a theology student at Wittenberg University. Artomedes (original name, Brotsorg) had a significant poetical production at university. On account of his prowess in verse he is believed to have been crowned with laurels as a young man by the neo-Latin writers Nikolaus Reusner and Paul Schede Melissus (cf. Flood). His career later included periods in princely service and church government. The second work here carries a fine small woodcut to title-page of Christ entering Jerusalem. Our copy of the first pamphlet, a cropped inscription shows, was a gift from the author to one ?Joannes Baptista? First work: USTC 655185, VD 16 A 3862 (one copy, at Wolfenbüttel); OCLC only adds locations of copies in microform (ta … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEW TESTAMENT.
A Lyon Par Sebastien Honorati [Par Symphorien Barbier], 1563, 1563. 16mo, 114 x 68 mms., pp. 1065 [1066 blank, 1067 - 1076 glossary, 1077 - 1082 notes on text, 1083 - 1095 index. 1096 colophon, 1097 - 1098 countries mentioned, 1099 permission to print, 1100 blank], later (probably 17th century) calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, gilt borders on covers; binding worn, top and base of spine chipped, corners worn. With an inscription in English, dated July 28th 1848 on both paste-down end-papers, "The gift of [?Lovell] Smith/ to his valued friend/ Thomas [? Kershaw Sommerville"; and an earlier inscription on blank verso of last printed leaf, "Hen: Fairfax" followed by two short notes in French. The French Protestant scholar Augustin Marlorat du Pasquier (1506 - 1562) started his ecclesiastical life in an Augustinian monastery; having become a Protestant, he took refuge in Geneva, where he worked as a proof reader. In 1560 he became the first Protestant preacher in Rouen, a move, which involved him in a confrontation with the forces of Charles IX; he was tried for high treason and was executed on 31 October 1562. His commentary on texts of the New Testament were published shortly before his death, in 1561, followed by posthumous commentaries of the books of Job and Isaiah. The printer Symphorien Barbier seems to have provided the sheets of this publication to a number of booksellers or publishers in Lyon, as the work appeared in 1563, with various imprints. This particular imprint is found in Bibliotheque Nationale and BCU Dorigny Switzerland.

HONDIUS, Henricus
Amsterdam. Map. Engraving. 15" x 19". This 17th c. map shows the Navarre region in Spain, including the city of Pamplona (famous for the running of the bulls festival) as well as Bayonne and San Sebastian. Mountains and trees illustrate the varied topography of the area, into which forts and castles are situated. The title cartouche appears in the upper left corner above a coat of arms. The map is in good condition. Some chips in the margins not affecting the image. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of a prolific map publishing business, which helped to propel the Dutch to lead the Golden Age of cartography. When Jodocus the elder died in 1612, his wife Colette ran the business until their sons came of age to join the firm. During this time, their daughter Elisabeth married Johannes Jansson and the two of them helped Colette run the business. Jodocus & Colette's youngest son, Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) later ran the business along with his extended family.

BERTELLI Ferdinandus
Ottimo e pregiato esemplare.

Legatura sei-settecentesca in piena pelle bazzana; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli su tassello e fregi in oro agli scomparti; tagli rossi. Ramusio, Giovanni Battista
Venice: Giunta, 1563. First editions of volumes II and II, third edition of volume I. This classic in the history of exploration includes: the first printings of the description of present-day New York by Verrazzano, the first European to see the harbor; Cartier's account of his pioneering inland exploration of the continent; numerous maps and views of fundamental importance in the cartography of the New World; and most important, the most complete and most influential text of Marco Polo's book of his travels. Ramusio (1485-1557), the great Venetian humanist, began corresponding with fellow humanist scholars, explorers, and travelers as early as 1525 in order to gather accounts of the Age of Exploration. In 1548 he began to assemble the work, which was first printed in 1550 (vol. I), 1556 (vol. III) and 1559 (the delayed Vol. II). Numerous revisions and reprints followed, and Ramusio spawned countless imitators and successors such as Hakluyt, Purchas, De Bry, and others. MARCO POLO. The second volume contains the first printing of Marco Polo's account in its most "brilliant, interesting, and complete" form. Ramusio determined to publish a critical edition based on several manuscripts including a now-lost manuscript containing "the supplementary recollections of the Traveller, noted down at a later period of his life" (Yule), here published for the first time. Yules's standard translation of Marco Polo, using two early manuscripts, includes numerous interpolations of Ramusio's text. Adams F-730. USTC 831100. EDIT 16 19978 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MORE, Thomas (1478-1535).
- Kl.-8vo (170 x 110 mm). In Leinen-Schuber. "The purpose of the Lucubrationes is obvious: it is to present the Erasmian, humanistic More. Everything it prints is accurately, with standards befitting the heir to Erasmus's publishers. This is most immediately apparent in comparing the Epigrammata here with the version in the Latina Opera from Louvain . The Basle version is simply more accurate and sophisticated" (J. K. McConica). [Click Below for Full Description]

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van
Amsterdam: Jan Huygen van Linschoten. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14.75 x 20.75". This incredible map of the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea combines pioneering navigational information with true cartographic artistry. As with many of his maps, van Linschoten has incorporated knowledge about the region's coasts and islands from Portuguese Portolan charts and enhanced its clarity and beauty with feats of rendering. On land, native wildlife scampers among cities (in red) and camps (in blue). In the water, careful stippling adds depth, literally and metaphorically, to the rendering of the coasts of continents and islands alike. The Indian subcontinent, the Maldives, and other surrounding islands in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are particularly fascinating, likely due in part to the thirteen years van Linschoten spent living in India. Overall, the map is much more accurate, and much more beautiful, than previous maps of the region, even if at times, style does get in the way of substance: invented mountain ranges and bodies of water often fill in areas about which little was otherwise known. Artistry and invention registers in the wildlife as well, as the map includes unicorns and a large, swordfish-like sea monster. In addition to an elaborate compass rose at the center of the Arabian Sea, text panels surrounded by decorative scrollwork give the appearance of gears, providing visual reference to the advancement of cartography in which van Linschoten participated. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original fold lines … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURGOS Juan Battista.
Bononiae [Bologne], Peregrinus Bonardus excudebat, 1563. 0Couverture rigide Pet 4°, [8] ff (sign. A4, B4). Caractères italique et romain, 2 lettres historiées. Cartonnage parme du XIXe siècle. (Rousseurs.) Adams B-3310. USTC 817264. EDIT 16 7967.Très bon
