TERENCE
Parisiis: Apud Ioannem de Roigny, 1552. This is a large-format illustrated printing of the "Comedies," bound in a more restrained version of the painted entrelac bindings in vogue in 16th century, a binding tall and dignified enough to suit its contents. Dibdin describes this as "a most excellent edition" that contains "almost all the valuable treatises upon the author up to the period of its publication" and notes that "it is of rare occurrence." (There were two issues of this 1552 edition; our colophon, dated to 17 Calendas Decembris, Anno 1551, indicates that we have the first.) Terence's six extant plays, the ancestors of drawing room and modern situation comedies, feature crusty fathers, rebellious sons, and impertinent slaves whose machinations solve the playwright's intricate complications of plot. The plays were popular throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and still retain their appeal. The text of the plays, in large and attractive italic type, is surrounded here by the commentary (in smaller italic) of Donatus (fourth century A.D.) and others. Each scene is preceded by a woodcut depicting the actors on a curtained stage. While very simple in composition, these are animated and frequently amusing. According to Mortimer, our text and scholarly apparatus are mostly reprinted from Girolamo Scoto's Venice edition of 1545, and the scene cuts "are extremely close copies of the Italian blocks used by Scoto.. 325 x 210 mm. (12 3/4 x 8 1/4"). 1 p.l. (title), 776 pp., [20] leaves (last blank). [Collates as in Adams and Schweiger]. Excellent contemporary calf ove … [Click Below for Full Description]

EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY CALF over thick pasteboards, covers with painted black and gilt rule frame, center of both boards with large, elaborate rectangular strapwork ornament in black and gilt, flat spine divided into panels by gilt rules and cresting roll, three spine panels with black and gilt ornament (similar to those on the covers), one panel with gilt titling inside an escutcheon, all edges gilt (the joints, edges, and portions of the spine at top and bottom very expertly renewed). Numerous fine "criblé" and other decorative initials and 145 woodcut scenes measuring approximately 2 x 3" (some of the cuts repeated). Front pastedown with "HB" book label of Heribert Boeder; title page with ink inscription of Johann Adolph Freitag dated 1653 and with library stamp of the College of Notre Dame, Villefranche sur Saone. Adams E-1033; Dibdin II, 470; Hoffman II, 68-69; Mortimer 512; Schweiger II, 1060. Spine a bit faded and discolored in spots, color of the cover leather a bit uneven, two pages with ink stain touching (but not obscuring) a word of text, isolated rust spots, but a very pleasing copy, the text unusually fresh, clean, and bright, and the carefully restored binding completely solid and certainly pleasing, despite its faults. Münster Sebastian, 1488-1552,Cos
Münster Sebastian, 1488-1552,Cos. Engelland/Albion, anno 1550, map, Sebastian Münster, woodcut, size of the leaf: 32x40 cm., brownish, waterstained on margins, small cracs, only on margins, one restored tear on upper margin (5 cm.). The second of Munster's maps of the British Isles, this important woodcut has North at the left-hand side of the page enabling a larger scale to be used than would have been possible with North at the top. A very considerable advance on any of the earlier maps, it had a very wide circulation, being issued in over twenty-five separate publications of Munster's Geographia and Cosmographia from 1540 until 1588, when an entirely new block was cut for the later editions. More than fifty rivers and some seventy or more named towns are shown, most for the first time on a printed map. The panel in the top left corner gives 'Interpretationes' of the Latin names into English whilst the Scottish flag is shown firmly planted in the sea! On the first edition of the map the text on the verso was contained within two pillars surmounted by a decorative archway. Identification of various issue dates is practically impossible without comparing loose maps with the complete dated atlases. In the late 1970's this map was still easily obtainable. Surprise is often expressed that North is not always shown at the top of the sheet on this, and various other, maps. Two reasons have been suggested for this: many of the very early maps were drawn in religious foundations and it is to be expected that East would be given prominence at the top - the Hereford World Map being … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abb. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - This three-volume set is the first of two Parts of the Catalogue Raisonné which concern the large corpus of architectural and topographical drawings from the Paper Museum. The next Part is dedicated to drawings of Renaissance and later architecture (A.X, forthcoming), while the present one covers the drawings documenting the remains of antique buildings. These architectural remains were to be found for the most part in Rome and its surrounding countryside, south east to the Alban Hills and east to Palestrina and Tivoli. Commissioned and collected by Cassiano dal Pozzo and his younger brother Carlo Antonio, the drawings formed a substantial part of their ambitious enterprise to record all surviving traces of Roman civilization. The drawings in Part A.IX are divided between the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities of the British Museum and Sir John Soane's Museum. Others are now dispersed among other institutions and private collections. The material ranges from fragments depicting a single architectural detail to folios with views of whole towns. The number of older drawings acquired by the dal Pozzo brothers in the present group far exceeds those that were newly commissioned by them, and includes groups of drawings connected with architectural treatises by Antonio Labacco (for his Libro appartenente all'architettura, 1552) and by Giovanni Antonio Dosio (for his Trattato) as well as by Pirro Ligorio for his encyclopaedic collectio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frankfurt, Christian Egenolff, (1552). - Folio (195 x 288 mm). (4), CCLXXV [= 275] ff. (lacking final blank). With large armorial woodcut on title page, two different full-page portraits of the author, full-page illillustration of an arbor consanguinitatis, and 36 woodcuts in the text by Hans Weiditz and Hans Schäufelein. Early 20th century vellum, bound to style using contemporary material, with handwritten spine title. 4 ties. Second edition of this encompassing and abundantly illustrated manual of law in the Holy Roman Empire. Göbler's "Mirror of Laws" superseded the earlier collections compiled by Tengler, Perneder and others, incorporating new legal texts and often adding helpful commentaries. The work gained particular importance through the numerous fine illustrations which most reimpressions chose to omit but which make the present edition one of the most beautiful and most splendidly outfitted legal treatises of the 16th century, as well as one of the finest woodcut books of its age. The Strasbourg artist Hans Weiditz (1500-36) and his Nuremberg colleague Hans Schäufelein (1480-1540), two of the outstanding woodcutters of their day, had previously collaborated on the "Theuerdank" and "Weißkunig" books commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I. - Binding insignificantly stained. A few remargined edge defects to title page, some browning and very slight waterstaining throughout, otherwise very few noticeable paper flaws. Somewhat closely trimmed, occasionally touching woodcut borders and printed marginal glosses with minimal loss, but altogether a very fine copy from the … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANEAU, Barthélemy
Lyon, Mathieu Bonhomme, 1552. ***** First edition in latin (a French edition was published the same month). Illustrated by 106 emblems, probably from copper blocks rather than wood after the designs of Pierre Eskrich also known as Pierre Vase. Aneau had translated the Alciati emblems in 1549 and with the emblem book format in mind he composed the 'Picta poesis' verses chiefly to suits cuts found in Bonhomme's general stock. Nearly half the emblems ar … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

8°; 368 pp., 5 leaves with a geographic map depicting a portion of Sicily with Aegadian islands and the Tunisian coasts. Speed, John. (1552 - 1629).
Original engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 51.2 cm wide x 38.3 cm wide. Mounted: ca 71 cm wide x 57 cm high. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only. John Speed (1552 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire, and went into his father's tailoring business. While working in London, his knowledge of history led him into learned circles and he came to the attention of Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House. His atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1610/11, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland [five in all] and a general map of Scotland. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them those showing a Scale of Passes being the places he had mapped himself. In 1627, two years before his death, Speed published Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World which was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman. There is a fascinating text describing the areas shown on the back of the maps in English, although a rare edition of 1616 of the British maps has a Latin text - this is believed to have been produced for the Continental market. Much of the engraving was done in Amsterdam at the workshop of Jodocus Hondi … [Click Below for Full Description]
