Guillaume GUEROULT (1507-1569)
Basileae: Ex Officina Ioannis Oporini, March 1552; Tubingae: Per Ulrichum Morhardum, 1546; Parisiis: Apud Joannem Lodo[v]icum Tiletanum, 1545. Containing three Greek classics with their Latin translations, mostly on facing pages, this is an unusually well-preserved specimen of a seldom-seen early binding style. In addition to Aesop's well-known "Fables," composed in the 6th century B.C., the present volume contains Xenophon's "Cyropaedia" (an early 4th century B.C. idealized biography of Cyrus the Great) and the "Tablet" of Cebes (a moralistic consideration, in the Socratic manner, of the significance of human life, probably not by the 4th century Greek philosopher it is attributed to, but rather by a pseudonymous author of the 1st or 2nd century A.D.). All three of our editions are obscure, and it is instructive to imagine how they would have been purchased--no doubt in original sheets--from a stationer handling the products of presses from Switzerland, Germany, and France and then assembled, perhaps by a university scholar, to provide an anthology of works likely meant for language study. Wallet-style bindings were used in the 16th century on books that were either very luxurious or put to hard use. Elaborately decorated wallet bindings might be used to protect precious manuscripts, while plainer versions were commonly used to protect ledger or account books, which were frequently used in open-air settings and which could encounter very hard wear. Few of these bindings have survived, and the present example is the first 16th century wallet binding we've had in our invento … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARETAEUS of Cappadocia
Venice: Giunta Press, 1552 ARETAEUS of Cappadocia (fl. ca A.D. 50). Libri septem - RUFUS of Ephesus (fl. 1st century A.D.) De corporis humani partium appellationbus libri tres. Both texts translated from Greek into Latin by Junius Paulus Crassus (ca 1500-75). Venice: Giunta Press, 1552. 4o (243 x 170 mm). 112 leaves. Roman and italic types. Printer's woodcut device on title-page and verso of last leaf, woodcut ornamental initials. (Waterstain at inner corner of upper margins.) Contemporary limp vellum (stained at top). Provenance: Princes of Liechtenstein (bookplate); Haskell F. Norman (bookplate, his sale part I, Christie's New York, 18 March, 1988, lot 16). FIRST EDITIONS. Born Cappadocia, an ancient name of a region in central Turkey, Aretaeus probably was schooled in Caesarea, after which he went to Alexandria and Rome. His writings on the causes, symptoms and cures of acute and chronic diseases are the only works of the Pneumatic school of physicians that survived. The Pneumatic School reflected Stoic influence and emphasized the physician's compassion for the patient. Aretaeus gave the first accurate account of diabetes, which he named, the first clear account of diphtheria, and the classic description of nodous leprosy. Like Aretaeus, Rufus was born in Turkey, in Ephesus. At the time Ephesus was an important medical center with a museum and an association of physicians. Rufus, who lived under the Emperor Trajan (98-117 C. E.) seems to have spent his entire active life in Ephesus, after he completed his medical studies, probably at Alexandria. Among Rufus' prolific wr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alden & Landis 587/19; Leclec 648; Palau 141161; Parry & Keith, New Iberian World III, pp. 213ff; Sabin 27747. Rare early edition of a French translation of López de Gómara's chronicle, one of the most important historical works on the discovery of the New World, first published in Spanish in 1552: "of outstanding merit and exceptionally well informed" (Parry).López de Gómara (ca.1511-ca. 1566), historian at Seville, is particularly famous for his descriptions of Hernán Cortés. Although he visited the Americas only after Cortés's death, he had direct access to Cortés (as his chaplain) and other "conquistadores" on their return to Spain and related their stories. He also had access to many documents that have since disappeared. Gómara's tale is superbly told, with sustained dramatic tension and telling irony and most of his information appears to be accurate.Washed copy, slightly browned, with faded owner's inscription on title-page and the lithographed bookplate of J. [DEMETRIUS PHALEREUS]
Florentiæ [Florence]: Apud Iuntas [Giunta], 1552. First separate edition. 8vo. (12), 96, (2) pp, bound without the final blank as often. Later, probably 18th century full calf, spine with raised bands, blindstamped decoration to the boards, the early ownership inscription of a Danto Maria di Franco del Besso to the head of the title page, a later ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Publisher's engraved device to the title page, repeated in a slightly different style to the verso of the final leaf. The first quire of the main part of the text has been supplied from another smaller copy and has been mounted onto wider margined leaves so they are flush with the rest of the text block, evidently done prior to the book being bound, a little marginal worming to the first quarter of the book, the occasional slight staining does not affect the printing either, neat repairs to the spine ends and joints. An important work on classical rhetoric by Demetrius of Phalerium (c.350-280 B.C.), this edition edited by Pietro Vettori. The work had only previously appeared in print in a collected edition of Greek oratory and rhetoric published by Aldus in 1508-9.

Las Casas, Bartolom de
Seville: Sebastian Trugillo, 1552. [61] leaves, lacking final blank. Titlepage printed in red and black, with text surrounded by a four-panel woodcut border; text printed in black letter. Small quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt tooled, edges sprinkled red. Front hinge rubbed, head of spine slightly chipped. Scattered contemporary manuscript annotations, occasionally trimmed. Faint dampstaining along lower edge, light tanning. Very good. During the 16th century the question of the legitimacy of enslaving American Indians and black Africans occupied several Spanish writers, the most famous of whom was Bartolom de las Casas. His disputations with Gins de Seplveda on the subject were sponsored by the Crown and were more than just show, for in the end, the king adopted the drastic change in policy that Las Casas advocated. Las Casas, the first great historian of the New World, arrived in Cuba in 1502 and spent most of the ensuing years in the Caribbean and Mexico until his return to Spain in 1547, so his arguments are based on personal observation and not on Aristotelian theory, as were Seplveda's. He had witnessed firsthand the destruction of the American Indian population via the diseases the Spaniards brought with them and through mistreatment and war, things he continually fought against as a priest. After his return to Spain and throughout his old age, he launched a series of attacks on Spanish policy. He engineered the publication of his arguments against Seplveda in a series of nine tracts printed in Seville in 1552 and 1553. The first and most famou … [Click Below for Full Description]

TERENCE
Parisiis: Apud Ioannem de Roigny, 1552. This is a large-format illustrated printing of the "Comedies," bound in a more restrained version of the painted entrelac bindings in vogue in 16th century, a binding tall and dignified enough to suit its contents. Dibdin describes this as "a most excellent edition" that contains "almost all the valuable treatises upon the author up to the period of its publication" and notes that "it is of rare occurrence." (There were two issues of this 1552 edition; our colophon, dated to 17 Calendas Decembris, Anno 1551, indicates that we have the first.) Terence's six extant plays, the ancestors of drawing room and modern situation comedies, feature crusty fathers, rebellious sons, and impertinent slaves whose machinations solve the playwright's intricate complications of plot. The plays were popular throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and still retain their appeal. The text of the plays, in large and attractive italic type, is surrounded here by the commentary (in smaller italic) of Donatus (fourth century A.D.) and others. Each scene is preceded by a woodcut depicting the actors on a curtained stage. While very simple in composition, these are animated and frequently amusing. According to Mortimer, our text and scholarly apparatus are mostly reprinted from Girolamo Scoto's Venice edition of 1545, and the scene cuts "are extremely close copies of the Italian blocks used by Scoto.. 325 x 210 mm. (12 3/4 x 8 1/4"). 1 p.l. (title), 776 pp., [20] leaves (last blank). [Collates as in Adams and Schweiger]. Excellent contemporary calf ove … [Click Below for Full Description]

EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY CALF over thick pasteboards, covers with painted black and gilt rule frame, center of both boards with large, elaborate rectangular strapwork ornament in black and gilt, flat spine divided into panels by gilt rules and cresting roll, three spine panels with black and gilt ornament (similar to those on the covers), one panel with gilt titling inside an escutcheon, all edges gilt (the joints, edges, and portions of the spine at top and bottom very expertly renewed). Numerous fine "criblé" and other decorative initials and 145 woodcut scenes measuring approximately 2 x 3" (some of the cuts repeated). Front pastedown with "HB" book label of Heribert Boeder; title page with ink inscription of Johann Adolph Freitag dated 1653 and with library stamp of the College of Notre Dame, Villefranche sur Saone. Adams E-1033; Dibdin II, 470; Hoffman II, 68-69; Mortimer 512; Schweiger II, 1060. Spine a bit faded and discolored in spots, color of the cover leather a bit uneven, two pages with ink stain touching (but not obscuring) a word of text, isolated rust spots, but a very pleasing copy, the text unusually fresh, clean, and bright, and the carefully restored binding completely solid and certainly pleasing, despite its faults.
