In Venezia [Venise], 1757. Presso Angiolo Geremia. [Click Below for Full Description]

Template | Trixum Beschreibung (Lando, Ortensio). Venezia, Giolito de´Ferrari, 1552. 8°. 318 pp., 1 f., with two woodcut printer s devices - with one extra leaf bound in Newer full vellum in the style of the 16th cent. - Bongi, Giolito I, 370; Grendler, Critics 227, 29. Rare first edition of this catalogue of "dubious" problems or uncertainties containing in contrast to the announcement on the title only three books, as the printer Giolito did not get a permission to print the fourth part on erotic questions, that was later published as "Quesiti amorosi" in another collection. Here presented are three chapters with "doubts" and their answers divided into the fields: natural history, moral philosophy and religious issues. The last part and its unorthodox treatment led to the title being put on the index of forbidden books. The whole work seems in parts like a parody of traditional collections of philosophical or medical "problemata", like for instance the handbook "Il perche" by Manfredi. Every topic is introduced with the question "why is..." and answered in a way that is sometimes satirical. Compared with his sources, Lando has often boiled down a lengthy and finical discussion to a witty aphorism that in some places borders on the absurd (cf. Cherchi, Polimatia di riuso, 1998, p. 123f.). - This copy has an extra leaf of dedication bound in, so that there are two leaves "Aii" (pages 3-4), one with a dedication to J. J. Fugger, the other to Christoph Mielich. - Extra white papers bound in later, one … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Speed John ( - 1629 ) London; issued in: London; date: ca 1676, 1552. technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 40 x 51; - description: Map shows the Ukraine with the European part of Russia and the black sea with the perninsula Krim. Decorative city map of Moscow and 5 views of the cities Archangel, Narva in Estland.; - vita of the artist: John Speed was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. It was with the encouragement of William Camden that Speed began his Historie of Great Britaine, which was published in 1611. Although he probably had access to historical sources that are now lost to us, his work as a historian is considered mediocre and secondary in importance to his map-making, of which his most important contribution is probably his town plans, many of which provide the first visual record of the British towns they depict. Much of the engraving was done in Amsterdam at the workshop of Jodocus Hondius. His maps of English counties are often found framed in homes throughout the United Kingdom.

Lando, Ortensio):
Venezia, Giolito de'Ferrari, 1552. 8°., 318 pp., 1 f., with two woodcut printer s devices - with one extra leaf bound in. Newer full vellum in the style of the 16th cent. Bongi, Giolito I, 370; Grendler, Critics 227, 29. - Extra white papers bound in later, one with extensive bibliographical information, page 5 with old annotation, only first and last leaf browned or a little soiled, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adams B 1047. BM STC FRench, S. 52 … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAIA Nonnio Marcello
1552. Woodcut title vignette of armillary sphere, 45 woodcuts in the text, two full-page; fine initials, 8vo (160 x 100mm. ) ff. [68]. Modern vellum. Paris: François Bartholomé (exc. R. Masselin 4 Nonas Octobris), 1552 First edition of this work dedicated to, and clearly written for, Marguerite De Valois, generally called Marguerite de France (1523-74) to whom a number of poetical works by members of the Pléiade were addressed; Ronsard refers to her as 'la sainte divine et chaste Marguerite'. On December 21 1549 she received the title of 'duchesse de Berry' (as here). In 1559 she married the Duke of Savoy in early July more or less on the eve of her brother's death; Henri II has been mortally wounded when taking part in a tournament. Marguerite whilst not herself a convert to the reformed religion, certainly helped those of the Protestant persuasion; her personal doctor was one such, Jacques Grévin (1538-70) poet and writer on medicine. The author of this work on the celestial sphere based on the Ptolemaic system came from the small town of Roccagloriosa in the province of Salerno in southern Italy. He published astrological prognostications, one in Italian addressed to Pope Julius III in Rome in 1551 (known in an unique copy), and the other a longer work in Latin Prognosticum in annum 1553 et partes 1554 (recorded in an unique copy at UCL which belonged to the doctor François Rasse des Noeux). He seems to have become established in Paris in the later 1550s, and there he published his paraphrases of the seven penitential psalms (Paris, 1558) which he dedicated to his patron … [Click Below for Full Description]

Corners bumped and edges worn. Light browning of interior pages, handwritten notes and underlining throughout. Some damage from liquid at bottom center margin of pages near end of book. Notes: I am not familiar enough with binding techniques used in the 1500s so I can't comment on the state of the binding. To me, it looks like a later binding, and I'd be truly surprised if they were using marbled paper over velum in the mid 1500's. But purchase it for what you believe it to be: I make no warranty on the state or age of the binding. The following quotation comes from a typed page that accompanied this book when I collected it (I have no way of authenticating this inforamtion, especially the last bit about the penned margin notes): "Selsus is the oldest medical document after Hipocrites; written in 30 a.d. After the invention of printing this Selsus document was one of the very first medical books to be set in type. Selsus left the best account of Roman medicine; he was the first important medical historian. His manuscript was lost during the Middle Ages and rediscovered in Milan in 1443. Later printed with this being an original 16th century imprint. MUNSTER, Sebastian.
Basle: Henri Petri, 1552, Latin edition. Woodcut, sheet 300 x 385mm. Minor repairs at centre fold, otherwise an excellent example. Munster's landmark map, the first to attempt to show America as a continent, yet demonstrating how little was known. On the map a narrow isthmus divides the Atlantic and Pacific in the region of the Carolinas, based on Verrazzano, and Yucatan is an island. The large island of Zipangri off the west coast is not California but Japan, based on the narrative of Marco Polo but a few years before any recorded visit to the islands by Europeans. The large vignette ship is the 'Victoria', the only survivor of Magellan's fleet of four. This is an example of the 6th state of 13, published in Munster's 'Geographia', the only printing with the longitude and latitude grid and the only dated edition (underneath Petri's colophon on the reverse), sixty years after Columbus's discovery of the New World. BURDEN: 12.

[Cid] Don Rodrigo de Vivar.
Amongst the most significant pieces of Spanish literature ever printed, an early edition, second edition of this text -arguably the best-, extremely rare as most of the early ones; the first edition of the legend of the Cid was printed in 1498 and is known in only one copy, a second edition was printed in 1509, but no copy is known today; in 1512 an edition is printed in Burgos after a manuscript found in San Pedro de Cardeña, a Benedictine monastery and the Cid´s resting place, allegedly contemporary to the Kinght: the text was edited by abbot Juan López de Velorado, and is the text which is here printed, which includes the genealogy of the Cid in the last 13 leaves, not present in earlier editions. All of the editions of the first half of the 16thcentury follow the text of 1498, rather than the text edited by Lopez de Velorado, in a way making this the second edition of this text (the 1516 edition mentioned by Palau could be a ghost, and is not known in any copies to our knowledge), and the Burgos edition of 1512 being virtually impossible to acquire. In all, this is a more complete version than that of 1498. Title printed in red and black within 4-piece woodcut border surroundings woodcut of the Cid on horseback; round gothic letter in double columns. The work narrates the life and deeds of the 11th century Castilian Knight and soldier "Cid" Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c.1040 - 1099), an important figure during the Reconquista -the Spanish effort to push the Moors out of occupied Spain- in medieval Spain and the undisputed hero of Castille; he gained fame and pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUNSTER, Sebastian.
Basle, Henri Petri, 1552, Latin text edition. Woodcut, sheet 300 x 375mm. Munster's famous map of Africa, the first atlas map to show the whole continent, apart from the tip of the Horn. A one-eyed giant is seated over Nigeria, representing the mythical tribe of the 'Monoculi', and an elephant fills southern Africa. Also marked are several kingdoms, including that of Prester John, and 'Meroë', capital of Kush in Nubia. The large text box contains a guide for sailing from Cadiz to Calecut in India. This example comes from the last edition of the 'Geographia', the only printing with the longitude and latitude bars. The map continued to appear in the 'Cosmographia' until 1578. A new map based on Ortelius appeared in 1588. BETZ: 3, variant 9.

Tarentino Secondo
Venice, Giovanno Andrea Valvassori called Guadagnino, 1552. no copies in America 8vo (155x99 mm). 76 leaves. Signatures: A-I8 K4. Italic type. Printer's device on title page. With 5 half-page woodcut illustrations and 5 historiated initials at the beginning of each canto. Green morocco binding signed by Bauzonnet-Trautz, panels within triple gilt fillets, spine with five raised bands and gilt title, inside gilt dentelles, marbled endleaves, gilt edges (corners and joints slightly worn). Small stain in the outer margin of the first and last leaf. On the title page the ownership entry "Bibliotheca Sedanensis" (the library of the Protestant Academy of Sedan was founded in 1607 under the leadership of Prince Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne and was dispersed in 1642 after the French annexation of Sedan). A very good copy from the library of Guglielmo Libri (Cat. 1847, no. 1096: "édition originale et très rare, que Melzi n'a jamais pu voir"). EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION (the work was reprinted by Guadagnino in 1562 and again by Domenico Imberti in 1619 and 1623). Little is known about the life and figure of Secondo Tarentino. The poem, composed in ottava rima, is dedicated to Francesco Colonna, who was archbishop of Taranto between 1544 and 1560. Tarentino was probably at the service of Colonna, whose family is celebrated in a poem printed on the title-page verso as well as throughout the work. The Bradamante gelosa, in its elaborated plot full of action and adventure, is a celebration of human folly which overturns traditional chivalric values. Beside the narration of the love of B … [Click Below for Full Description]
