MEIGRET, Louis.
1550. MEIGRET, Louis. Elyot, Thomas (1490?-1546)
Imprinted at London in fletestrete in the house of Thomas Berthelet. Cum priuilegio ad imprimendum solum. 1550 - Small octavo; [4](of 7), 73, 68-90 leaves (i.e.198pp). Bound in recent full vellum with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label and gilt-lettered date direct to foot of spine; endpapers contemporaneous with binding; lacks first three printed leaves (title-page and first 2 leaves of 'The Proheme'), with good period paper facsimile of title-page loosely inserted; contemporary inscription at foot of final page of 'The Proheme' obliterated with ink cross-hatching in an early hand, very small library stamp on front free endpaper, otherwise a clean copy with a few decorative capitals and very occasional early ink marginalia. Berthelet's colophon is undated in this edition, and though the date '1542' has been added to the colophon in an early hand, ESTC puts the date at 1550. Rare early example of Elyot's pocket manual to health and diet which despite its missing three leaves remains a delight. ESTC S121123, citing just 6xUS and 2xUK copies (British Library and Glasgow University Library). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bible. N.T. Greek. 1550.
Lutetiae: Ex Officina Roberti Stephani Tall folio (34 cm; 13.25"). [16] ff., 272, 202 pp., [1] f.. 1550 Robert Estienne's 1550 edition, his third edition of the New Testament in Greek, established the textus receptus for subsequent editors. His documentation of collations of fifteen manuscripts (including the Codex Bezae) resulted in the first critical apparatus for an edition of the Bible" (Pelikan). In addition to being a major scholarly achievement, Estienne's work is universally hailed for its typographic beauty: It is printed in the largest of the three fonts of Greek type that Claude Garamond designed, the famous Royal Greek type — the grecs du roi that Robert Estienne ordered on behalf of King Francis I of France. Their design was based on the handwriting of the Cretan copyist Angelo Vergecio. => This is the very first use of this largest size of the Garamond Royal Greek type. Adding to the visual beauty of the typography and aiding the reader in navigating the text is the printer's use of two sizes of foliated and grotesque Greek initials, headpieces of similar design, and a divisional title-page for the second section that begins with the Epistles of Paul. As previously mentioned, the volume offers critical apparatus: This is printed in the inner margin of the text and gives variant readings and additions from manuscripts that Estienne had consulted for collating against the printed text; and the outer margin contains references and the ordinary chapter-numbers and division-letters, A, B, etc. Two versions of => the Estienne printer's device are used in the work: … [Click Below for Full Description]

MACHIAVELLI, NICCOLO. ( Nicolo Machiavelli ).:
No place or printer, 1550.. 1550, small 4to, approximately 210 x 145 mm, 8¼ x 5¾ inches, vignette portrait of the author on title page, at the rear are 7 double page plans of battles and encampments, Italian text, pages: 1-185 plus [18] Figura unnumbered, collation: a-aa4, bb6, bound in modern quarter blue morocco over marbled sides, raised bands, gilt motif in compartments and gilt lettering to spine, marbled endpapers and silk marker. Corners very slightly worn, a few pages lightly age-browned, an occasional small pale damp stain to margins. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. The present work is Part IV of an edition of Machiavelli's writings entitled "Tutte le opere di Nicolo Machiauelli cittadino et secretario fiorentino, divise in 5. parti, et di nuouo con somma accuratezza ristampate", all the volumes of which are dated 1550 on the title page with no place or printer (see Adams M9). Although Adams accepts the date of 1550, others believe that this edition was printed circa 1620 and possibly in Geneva (see Copac, copy held by Warwick University with identical collation). The Art of War (1521), one of only a few works of Machiavelli to be published during his lifetime, is a dialogue set in the Orti Oricellari, a garden in Florence where humanists gathered to discuss philosophy and politics. The principal speaker is Fabrizio Colonna, a professional condottiere and Machiavelli?'s authority on the art of war. The basis for the book is the creation of a modern army. France 1550 - AN UNPUBLISHED AMERICANUM 8vo. 2 works in one volume. Ff. [2, the second blank], 104 (the last 3 blank), [17, blank]; 8, [2], [10, blank], one full-page and several smaller diagrams in the text, manuscript in ink on paper, entirely ruled in red, only towards the end very light traces of humidity, otherwise evenly a little toned and minimally spotted; early 17th-century calf, spine with raised bands and with gilt-stamped floral ornaments, covers with single gilt fillet, central gilt-stamped wraths and gilt-stamped owner’s name Iacobus Auberius (see below); a little worn and scratched. The volume opens with a diagram of the winds as an illustration to chapter 35. The first text is a cosmography in the broadest and still medieval sense, with chapters on astronomy, geometry, including planetary motion, climate zones and their inhabitants, the size of the earth, with a chapter on the armillary sphere, and a Biblical history of the peoples of the earth. The latest discoveries and voyages referred to are those of Magellan (with a chapter on the Terra Australis incognita) and Columbus’ discovery of the Americas. Chapter 45, entitled De America in Communi mentions the islands of Jamaica, Cuba and Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). The rest of the Americas is only referred to in a cursory way, which suggests that the text must have been written in the second half of the 1520s, just after news of Magellan’s epic voyage spread. The Commentatio de re nautica is mainly on the meteorological determinants of navigation, in particular winds, as w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Linacre, Robert Estienne, Georg Buchanan
Lutetieae [Paris]: Ex officina Roberti Stephani [Estienne], 1550 An extremely scarce sixteenth century printing of two grammatical works by Thomas Linacre (1460-1524), who was a noted and influential scholar, admired for his translations and writing in Latin. Emendata, first published in the 1520's went through numerous printings - this is circa the 13th printing. This version of Rudimenta was first published after his death in 1533. The printer - 'Roberti Stephani' was also known as Robert Estienne, and was a noted scholar as well as a printer. Bound in contemporary full leather binding with raised bands, title label and elaborate gilt tooling to spine; panelled gilt tooled design to boards. The binding has wear and some loss to joints and some loss to the top and bottom of the spine. Boards have lost a little leather at the corners. Overall this would be an easy leather repair. Page edges marbled. The front pastedown has a bookplate of Charles C Handford and there is a signature of H White to the fep. The fep and initial blank have a little worm damage and loss to outer edge. There is a note about Linacre written on the verso of the initial blank. Contents: title page with small signature to top and signature of Tho Crashawe to either side of the printer's device; text 404pp; index 37pp with errata note at end; blank 4pp; note; title page Rudimenta 1550 with printer's device; text 116pp; note; blank; ep.
