[PAULI, Johann, and others]
Frankfurt: 1550. Folio (281 x 188 mm). [4], 80 leaves. Large woodcut on title, full-page woodcut of richly attired ladies and lords in a walled garden on verso of title, and 59 woodcut illustrations of various sizes in the text. Some light browning, small stain to last few leaves. 19th-century parchment over pasteboards, red edges. Provenance: Paul Schmidt (1834-1907), bookplate.*** first edition of an illustrated Schwänke Sammlung, or vernacular collection of comical stories; only edition thus illustrated; no copies in American libraries. The edition may have been compiled by its printer/publisher Christian Egenolff the elder, a native of Strassburg, who moved his press and materiel to Frankfurt in 1532, producing hundreds of books until his death in 1555. The four-page Register lists 223 story titles. A number come from Johann Pauli?'s popular collection of over 600 short comic tales or anecdotes in prose, Schimpf und Ernst (Satire and Seriousness). Pauli?'s Schwänke, which he claimed to have written for the diversion of nuns, also served as a pithy source book of stories to enliven sermons; he may in fact have gleaned many of the tales from the great Alsatian preacher Geiler von Kaisersberg, whose sermons Pauli recorded. First published in Strassburg in 1522, Pauli?'s collection of half-didactic half-comical stories became the biggest best-seller in sixteenth-century Germany after Luther?'s Bible and translations of the Decameron (Verfasserlexikon 2 7:371). But the present anonymous collection contains many stories that did not appear in Pauli?'s collection. These are … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAUSANIAS
First edition of the famous translation of Abraham Loesher, the best edition and the most faithful according Keyboard. The Princeps of this text dates from 1516 edition, printed by Aldus in Venice, but according to Brunet (Iv, 454), although rare, it was made on a bad script and was performed negligently, giving all its importance to the edition we present .. Published in Colophon. Thumbnail of the printer on the back of the last leaf, with the inscription Arion. Historiated initials. Full contemporary calf. Nerves back again at the end of the nineteenth century, with jewels and casters on the nerves, part of title in red morocco. Corners redone. On upper cover, gilt G. Harrosset. Many scratches on boards. To work on the lower flat. The bottom of the title page has been strengthened 1cm. Light traffic accidents: A pale wetness in low margin (another high margin on a few pages) ranging in fading to page 48, taking over the last 20 pages and index. Work worm between page 26 and 46 in the lower right corner. A second of 349-413 in right page margin at the very bottom. Pausanias was a geographer and writer of the second century AD. JC's description of Greece is a testimony of the first importance on Greece to Roman times, particularly in the second century of the Christian era, although Pausanias often delights to mix history and mythology. In the manner of a modern travel guide, it provides, as and when its route, a detailed list of sites they visit and legends related to it. Numerous archaeological excavations have repeatedly confirmed the truth of his information, especially … [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]

Appresso di Agostino Bindoni 1550 Dedicatoria di Lodovico Domenichi a Don Diego Hurtado di Mendoza. Cm.14,7x9,5. Pg.88, numerate solo al recto. Legatura in piena pergamena rigida. Tagli spruzzati. [Click Below for Full Description]

VASARI, GIORGIO
Florence: Giunti. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST COMPLETE, FIRST ILLUSTRATED, AND MOST SOUGHT AFTER EDITION OF THE FIRST MODERN HISTORY OF ART. [The Second Edition overall.] An exceptional copy, very handsomely bound. Vasari's "book contains the biographies of Italian painters, etc. from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. They are based on earlier written and printed sources, on oral accounts, on his knowledge of works of art and his own collection of large drawings. Vasari traveled extensively to collect personal information, meeting most of the artists of his time… Michelangelo was his great hero. The Lives are freely laced with stories and anecdotes, some of which are certainly apocryphal… Vasari's excellent sense of narrative, however, and lively style combined with his wide personal acquaintance makes his 'Lives' a vital contribution to our understanding of the character and psychology of the great artists of the Renaissance, a term ('rinascita') which he was the first writer to use… It also contains an autobiography and a valuable treatise on the technical methods employed in the arts. It became a model for subsequent writings on the history of art… For its period it has remained the chief authority and new editions are published regularly" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 88). This second edition-the first illustrated and the preferred edition-comprises 161 lives, 28 more than the first edition of 1550 and it brings the biographies up to date from 1550 to 1568. The portraits were designed by the author himself (to his contem … [Click Below for Full Description]

The last complete copy at auctions, sold for $ 37 500 (New-York, Avril 2013). Fine copy, very clean for this sort of book. [Click Below for Full Description]

Mattei Mauro
Riccardi, II, 138: Bella edizione . First edition of Mauro s new translation of the Sphaera and of his annotations and commentaries which include theological and Neo-Platonic interpretations. It reveals Mauro s compliance with the Church s opposition to Copernivus which induced him to suppress the remarks on the new discoveries which were in his 1537 Italian version. The theme of the commentary is a compromise and is succintly expressed in the maxim printed on p. 160 (trans.): God is sphere whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere (Kraus 104/126). 4to (cm. 21,2), 219(1) pp. con capilettera, num.se ill.ni e diagrammi xilografici. CHRISTIAN III'S BIBEL -
gantske Hellige Scrifft, udsæt paa Danske. Kbhvn.: Ludowich Dietz 1550. Fol. (552) blade. [Click Below for Full Description]

BLUM (BLOEM), Hans.
Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXXVIII, pp. 159-160, 392-413 note; De Long & De Groot I, 319, c. 1-5; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (2 copies of French issue); cf. BAL 311-313 and 881; Harris & Savage, British architectural books, p. 121. Extremely rare second bilingual (Dutch and French) edition of a classic architectural work on the five orders of classical columns, here with all texts and materials from the two different issues. The book first appeared in Latin at Zürich in 1550 and was translated into numerous languages, including Dutch in 1592. Visscher published a Dutch edition in 1617 and the first bilingual (Dutch & French) edition in 1623. The book was originally illustrated with large-scale diagrammatic woodcuts (here, as in most 17th-century editions, with copperplates) that could easily be understood and that certainly helped to assure the books popularity throughout Europe for over a century. The present copy may be called the Dutch issue, for the illustrations are printed next to the Dutch text and the book begins with the Dutch preliminaries, but the French preliminaries have been included between the Dutch preliminaries and the main text. Although both title-pages say printed by Visscher, this refers to the printing of the copperplates. He must have farmed out the letterpress printing, for its type, initials and ornaments clearly identify the printer as Paulus van Ravesteyn. Rather worn, with a tear across the title-page repaired at an early date (using a strip of paper from a 17th or 18th century drawing of children or putti, pasted to the blank back of the leaf), s … [Click Below for Full Description]
