Pierre DORE
[Click Below for Full Description]

Woodcut printer's device on the verso of the last leaf. Woodcut decorated initials. Dark blue morocco signed by Masson De Bonnel. Spine with five raised bands, title in gilt lettering. Marbled pastedowns and flyleaves, inside dentelles. Gilt edges. A very good copy, loss to the outer lower corner of the title-page and fol. G3, in both cases not affecting text; few lightly browned stains.Provenance: early illegible ownership inscription in brown ink on recto of fol. A2. A copy exceptionally printed on blue paper of the first appearance in print of the famous Della nobilissima pittura, an edition rarely seen on the market: there exists only one auction record of an ordinary copy in the last sixty years. The treatise was written by the Venetian physician Michelangelo Biondo, who lived mainly in Naples and Rome. Della nobilissima pittura is dedicated to the 'Eccellentissimi Pittori di tutta l'Europa', and represents one of the most interesting works on art theory produced during the Italian Renaissance; in it, Biondo avers the dignity of painting, arguing for its worthy consideration as a liberal art. Along with Lancilotti's Trattato di pittura, Biondo's work represents one of the first sixteenth-century attempts to adopt the literary form of the dream-narrative: in Della nobilissima pittura the personification of painting appears to the author in a dream and laments her low stature among the liberal arts. "If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it!" - Julius Caesar A rare collection of civil war histories and Julius Caesar war commentaries! Julius Caesar's war commentaries are some of the most prolific military writings! While not specifically known for his writing, Julius Caesar wrote this book which would become a mainstay in the Latin literature canon. It focuses on first-hand account of Julius Caesar in the Callic wars, but it was written as though from a third-person view. This 1549 edition was published in Lyon by Gryphius and edited by Giovanni Giocondo. It should be noted that included in this edition are the anonymous Bellum Africum and Bellum Hispaniense, and Aulus Hirtius' Bellum Alexandrinum and his continuation of Caesar's De bello Gallico. DORE (Pierre).
155ff. chiffrés (i.e. 156). [Click Below for Full Description]

Mottled sheepskin, spine gilt, with five raised bands and red morocco label in second compartment (joints cracked with some loss, headcaps chipped, covers scuffed and damaged, extremities worn). Florence, Appresso Bernardo Giunti, First edition of the poetry of churchman and writer Agnolo Firenzuola (1493-1543), one of several first editions of Firenzuola's works to be published by the Giunta press in the 1540s after the poet's death. Writing exclusively in the vernacular, Firenzuola favoured a simplistic model for the Italian language that incorporated its spoken characteristics, and not just the high literary style of the fourteenth century. Alongside his poetry, Firenzuola is best known for his licentious Ragionamenti, a dialogue between prostitutes; his contribution to the questione della lingua debates; and a translation of Apuleius' Asino d'Oro. Particularly enjoyable amongst Firenzuola's Rime is his Bernesque Canzone in Lode della Salsiccia, or 'Song in Praise of Sausage', in which sausages, particularly those from Bologna, are the 'food of poets' and 'more perfect than any other food.' In writing such verse Firenzuola was participating in a growing genre of satirical, food-related writing in Italy at the time (see, for example, Francesco Berni's tribute to peaches). Some have attributed it to Lasca, rather than Firenzuola; however, it was this verse in particular that prompted the New Monthly Magazine in 1832 to give the poet … [Click Below for Full Description]

About the Author & Literature - Herodian or Herodianus of Syria, sometimes referred to as "Herodian of Antioch" (c. 170 - c. 240), was a minor Roman civil servant who wrote a colourful history in Greek titled History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus in eight books covering the years 180 to 238. DAZZI, Andrea (1473-1548)
In 8vo (cm 14,5); legatura del XVIII secolo in mezza pelle con fregi e titolo in oro al dorso, taglio rosso; pp. 320. Carattere corsivo latino e greco. [Click Below for Full Description]

STYMMELIUS, Christoph (Stummel, 1525-1588)
Peter Horst, 1549. 8vo. (48) leaves. With the printer's device on the title-page. Boards, some very light browning, but a fine, nearly uncut copy.VERY RARE EDITION of Stymmelius' morality play on the university life. It became a great success right from its first appearance in 1549 and was reprinted twenty-one times until the end of the century (cf. G. Voss, Christoph Stummel: "Studentes, comoedia de vita studiosorum', in: "Jahresbericht über das Königliche Kaiser-Wilhelms-Gymnasium zu Aachen für das Schuljahr 1898/99", Aachen, 1899, p. 1-12). At the end of the volume is printed a long poem by Stymmelius Iudicium Paridis. In his comedy Stymmelius introduces three young students on the stage: the assiduous Philomates, and two of his idle fellows, Acolastus and Acrates, who are going to spent their time and money with girls and gambling. Though the plot is not really original and Stymmelius sporadically borrowed from Gulielmus Gnaphaeus' Acolastus (1526), nevertheless Stymmelius' comedy is very im-portant for giving a vivid and faithful picture of the students' life in a German university of the six-teenth century, and furthermore expressing the educational intention of its author (cf. K.G. Konrad, Die deutsche Studentenschaft in ihrem Verhältnis zu Bühne und Drama, Berlin, 1912, pp. 74-77; see also W.F. [Click Below for Full Description]
