[Click Below for Full Description]

Bust portrait of Antonio Albizzi in an oval. Antonio Albizzi (lat : Antonius Albicius) was an Italian jurist and genealogist, born in Florence in 1547. In 1576 he was in the service of Cardinal-Archduke Andreas of Austria. In 1585 he converted to Lutheranism and spent the rest of his life in the Protestant Imperial City of Kempten, where he died in 1626. His most famous work was Principum Christianorum Stemmata (Augsburg 1612), an unusual collection of engravings showing the family trees of the leading royal and noble houses of Europe of that time (and unusually also including the genealogy of the Turkish Emperors). The fine decorative engravings include family trees, portraits and coats of arms and are set against the backdrop of City views and panoramas closely copied from the Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg (1572-1618). Lettered on the oval frame: 'ANTONIVS ALBICIVS NOBILIS FLORENTINVS'; on the bottom: 'Haec est ALBITII, Regum qui Stemmata scripsit. / Atque Ducum, artificis prodita imago manu. / Nobilitatis uti scriptor quoq[ue] Nobilis esset; / Nobilis hic genere est, Scriptore, et ingenio'. Engraving on laid paper; on the verso text in letterpress; total: 193 x 127 mm

[Click Below for Full Description]

VISSCHER, Roemer.
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 874; De Vries, Emblemata 56; cf. Praz 530 (first edition). Third edition of a popular and witty Dutch emblem book written by Roemer Visscher (1547-1620). The work consists of three series of 60 emblems, each with a motto in Latin or Dutch, a two-line verse below, and a short explanation on the facing page. The emblems are typical for the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher (1586-1652): instead of the usual mythological iconography of traditional emblems, Visscher takes simple objects or subjects from daily life and sets them in their natural environment, in a city house or in the country, and with a perfectly chosen arrangement or action he directly comes to his point in a clear, yet entertaining way. Visscher's work was epoch-making: he was one of the first artists to depict the typical, natural Dutch landscape, breaking with older conventional images. With armorial bookplate on paste-down. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding also very good, ties only slightly frayed.

LIVY
Col priuilegio dello Illustriss, Senato Veneto, per anni xv. In Venetia M D XLVII. [From Colophon: In Venetia nella stamperia degli heredidi Luc'Antonio Giunti Fiorentino, Nell anno del MDXLVII. Nel mese di Marzo.] 1547. Large, thick folio, 309 x 212 mms., [21 leaves, including final blank], 485 leaves printed recto and verso, with engraved vignette on title-page and a Giunti engraved vignette on colophon, later 18th century quarter vellum, marbled boards, black morocco; upper inner margin and lower portion of title-page neatly repaired, lower front hinge slightly cracked, margins of last leaf very slightly frayed, corners worn, but a very good copy of this popular imprint. This edition was prepared by the Italian historian and classicist, Jacopo Nardi (1476 - 1563). Titus Livius, as the historian is formally known, composed his Ab urbe condita in the years 27 to 15 B. C., though only about 25% of the original is thought to survive. There was some dispute in the early 19th century about the editio princeps, which is the edition printed in Rome by Sweynheym and Pannartz in two volumes in 1469. Nardi's edition was first published in 1540.
