Major, Georg
VVitembergae: (per Petrum Seitz), 1544 First edition of Major's work on the Church fathers, with a fifteen-page preface by Martin Luther. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards. Both covers elaborately stamped in blind, using roll tools. Metal clasps and catches lacking. . Octavo. Title-page within a woodcut architectural border, two large decorative woodcut initial letters. Binding extremities lightly worn, minor worming to front board, last leaf, and both pastedowns. Lacking front free endpaper. Light dampstain at fore-margin of first several gatherings. Marginal chips to last leaf, one cropping part of a running title. Short old Latin inscription on front pastedown, twentieth century owner's signature and small book label also on front pastedown. Early ink underscoring in several places, early ink annotation at the end of the Martin Luther preface. A good copy. Georg Major (1501-1574) was a Lutheran theologian and one of leading disciples of Martin Luther, by whom he was ordained. He was appointed rector of the Johannischule in Magdeburg and in 1537 became a court preacher at Wittenberg. He served a long tenure as dean of the Theological School at Wittenberg, was a partner of religion and church policy of the Saxon Electorate, and was translator and editor of the Wittenberg Luther edition. He is known for his part in the "Majoristic controversy," which forced Luther's heirs to refine their definition of the relationship between faith and works, a controversy he felt reluctant to be drawn into.

Josephus, Flavius (Arlenius, Arnoldus & Gelen, Sigismund, eds.)
Basileae [Basel]: Froben. Cum Imp. Maiestatis Privilegio ad annos v., 1544. Editio Princeps. Folio, pp. [xii], 967, [i]. Title-page in red and black with woodcut printer's device (repeated on MM6, the final page), a few woodcut initials and a few spaces for initals with only guide letters printed, woodcut headpieces. A small number of underlinings and marginal annotations in an old hand, mostly towards the front. Title-page a little grubby at fore-edge, occasional old marginal repairs, a little faint dampstaining to margins near the rear. Contemporary German blind-tooled panelled calf over bevel-edged wooden boards, with as-yet unidentified armorial tools to centre, raised bands to spine. Sympathetically rebacked, some chips and surface loss to corners, clasps lost, upper hinge separated a little but entirely sound. Some pencilled bibliographical notes to front paste-down, together with a small but colourful recent bookplate with the initials L A. To rfep recto, 'Editio Princeps' noted in a 19th-century hand. Also at the rear, small armorial bookplate of the Dominican Monastery of Woodchester (est.1851) tipped in. The first printing of the original Greek text of the works of Josephus, which remained the standard text for over three hundred years. A Latin translation had been printed and reprinted beginning in the incunable period. This Greek text was edited by Arnoldus Arlenius (1510-1582) together with Froben's in-house scholar Sigismund Gelen, working from a manuscript discovered by Arlenius in his cataloguing of the library of the Spanish ambassador to Venice, Diego H … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Parisiis Ex officina Rob. Stephani 1544 1Parisiis, Ex officina Rob. Stephani, 1544.

VALLA (Lorenzo)
Parisiis. Apud Simonem Colinaeum, 1544. 4to, 215 X 145 mms., pp. [xxii], 331 [332 text, 333 Errata, 334 blank], title-page within ornamental border, handsomely bound in fine 18th century red morocco, with ornate gilt borders on covers, double cone shape within gilt oval border on each cover as well, spine ornately gilt in compartments to a floral motif, all edges gilt; title-page mounted, spine very slightly creased, other slight wear to binding, but generally a fine and attractive copy, with the Kinnaird bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper - possibly that of Charles Kinnaird Eighth Lord Kinnaird of Inchture (1780–1826). Valla (1407 - 1457) published this volume in 1471, as the first textbook on the "elegances of the Latin language" since late antiquity, and it was used in schools all over Europe, though I somehow doubt that this sumptuous binding was the property of an 18th century British school boy. He was an enthusiastic polemicist, and his tart assessments of classical authors, particularly Cicero, did not win friends and influence people. He never married, but had three children by his Roman mistress. Ulick Peter Burke makes this assessment of him: "An aggressive man, even for that age of intellectual gladiators, Valla made enemies easily. A professional heretic, he was well suited for his role as a critic of authority and orthodoxy. As one colleague observed about his notorious comparison of Cicero and Quintilian: Valla wrote simply to disturb people. There is no doubt about his success in this respect. More than 50 years later, in the age of Luther and of th … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

SFORTUNATI Giovanni
Bindoni, 1544. in-4, ff. 129, (1 bianco), bel caratt. tondo. Leg. posteriore p.perg. rigida. Buon esemplare.

Münster, Sebastian.
1544. Folio (197 x 302 mm). (8), CLXVI, (2) pp. With title woodcut (sundial), 72 mathematical woodcuts, and printer's device on final page. Appealing contemporary binding using a 15th century vellum manuscript with red and blue Lombardic initials. Modern ties. In custom-made cloth case. Second German edition of Münster's manual on the construction of sundials. In contrast to most of his other mathematical and astronomical works, Münster's writings on sundials (gnomonics) "did indeed exert some influence [...] Zinner views Münster mainly as a successor to Regiomontanus, Stöffler, and Georg Hartmann [...] Münster turned his attentions to a large number of different sundials, and his importance as a mathematician, if indeed he had any, must be seen in terms of his importance as a theorist of sundials - which is to say, as a craftsman, for the science of sundials is not fully distinguishable from craftsmanship. It is impossible today to estimate how many sundials Münster built or how many were built based on his designs. There is no doubt, however, that his writings wide widely read" (cf. Burmeister, Biogr. Gesamtbild, p. 188). - Somewhat browned and fingerstained throughout; some waterstaining near beginning; gutter professionally repaired near end. Provenance: from the collection of the civil servant and amateur astronomer Carl Lichtenberger (1796-1883), then by inheritance to his son-in-law, the chemist Hermann Finzelberg (1842-1922), director of Schering AG, with his ownership and notes on pastedown and title page. Giovio, Paolo.
1544. 8vo. 50, (2) ff. With small woodcut on final page. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title ("Vita Di Scanderbec"). Extremely rare account of the military resistance to Ottoman rule in Albania, led by the Albanian noble George Kastrioti (1405-68), widely known as "Skanderbeg" (from Turkish 'Iskender Bey', 'Lord Alexander'). "A synopsis of Paolo Giovio's 'Commentario delle cose de Turchi' and Marinus Barleti's 'Historia de vita et gestis Scanderbegi'" (cf. Göllner), two of the principal 16th-century works on the man who, as most of the Balkans came under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, increasingly was perceived as the late hero of the western world. "Skanderbeg's military skills presented a major obstacle to Ottoman expansion, and he was considered by many in western Europe to be a model of Christian resistance against the Ottoman Muslims. Skanderbeg is Albania's most important national hero and a key figure of the Albanian National Awakening" (Wikipedia). - Some brownstaining throughout. Formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Edit 16, CNCE 21160. Pétrovitch 20. Göllner 827. Cf. Brunet III, 586.

1544. (8), 290, (2 [statt 30]) SS. Mit großer Holzschnittdruckermarke am letzten Bl. verso. Neurer brauner Pappband. 4to. In maßgefertigter Leinenkassette. VITRUVIUS MARCUS (I secolo a.C.). PHILANDRIER GUILLAUME (1505-1565).
Roma, Andrea Dossena, 1544. "Annotationes was the third commentary on Vitruvius to be published and the first to appear unaccompanied by the full Vitruvius text. Philander's commentary is composed of sections of the text followed by practical explanations and definitions, each passage heavily reinforced with scolarly and classical examples? Philander's work is at once a learned study and a practical manual of architecture, incorporating the methods of both the humanists and architects. It is the first synthesis of academic and practical interpretations of Vitruvius' treatise to appear in published form. The contribution of Philander and of the Accademia delle Virt-- to mid - sixteenth - century architectural theory is of the greatest importance." (Millard). Fowler 403. Cicognara 708. Millard, French books nø 165. Schlosser Magnino, pp. 252 - 253.

Ruland, “A survey of the double-page maps in thirty-five editions of the Cosmographia Universalis 1544-1628 of Sebastian Münster ...” in: Imago Mundi XVI (1962), pp. 84-97; for Münster: DSB IX, pp. 580-581. Most extensive edition of Münster's monumental, extensively illustrated description of the world, which set a new standard in the field, following both a regional and encyclopaedic approach. The first edition appeared in 1544, but it was greatly expanded over the years, the present edition adding many new maps. The most highly valued of all cosmographies, it passed through dozens of editions in 100 years and was of paramount importance for the revival of geography in 16th-century Europe. The book was printed by the heirs of Sebastian Henricpetri (1546-1627), the son of Heinrich Petri, stepson of the author Sebastian Münster. The 1588 edition (and the two following editions) contained a total of ca. 1280 woodcuts, which number was increased in the present edition with about 200. From the library of Ericsberg Castle near Katrineholm, Sweden, built for the Swedish statesman Erik Karlsson Gyllenstierna (1602-1657) in the 1650s (two engraved views of the castle, from Dahlberg's Suecia antiqua et hodierna, are loosely inserted); several annotations in Swedish on the pastedowns. One leaf of the register restored affecting part of the text (replacement from a smaller copy of the 1614 edition), frontispiece reinforced in the gutter margin, some occasional thumbing and a few dog-eared leaves, otherwise a very good and clean copy, wi …

appresso Michele Tramezino, 1544. In-8° antico (155x100mm), ff. (9), 178, (2), legatura settecentesca p. pergamena rigida con titolo in oro su tassello in pelle rossa al dorso. Tagli azzurri. STC Italian Books, p. 57. Brunet, I, co … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]
