Klaus Dobat (Autor) Leonhart Fuchs
Taschen. Yuhanna ibn Sarabiyun (Serapio maior).
Basel, Heinrich Petri, (March 1543). Folio (205 x 290 mm). (24), 491, (1) pp. 17th century black-tinted vellum binding using an earlier liturgic musical manuscript. Important Latin edition of this Arabic medical compendium (first printed, also in Latin, in 1479), with additions by Gerard de Cremona. It provides a collection of opinions voiced by Greek and Arabic physicians on pathology and therapeutics. "No Arabic printed edition exists so far" (cf. Choulant). The third-century doctor Yahya bin Sarabiyun, son of a Bagarma physician, wrote his great medical work "Al-Kunnas" in Syriac, but it was soon translated into Arabic by scholars such as Musa Ibrahim al-Haditi and ibn Bahlul. There exist manuscripts in twelve and in seven books. "The seven-book edition was frequently printed in Latin translations as 'Breviarium' and 'Practica therapeuticae methodus'. Albanus Torinus, the editor of the Basel 1543 edition, called him Janus Damascenus, for which reason he has been confused with the well-known theologian of that name. He is also often mistaken for his younger namesake, Serapio junior" (cf. GAL I, 233). Some catalogues even ascribe this work to the Baghdad physician Abu-Zakariya Yuanna Ibn-Masawaih. - Slight waterstaining; some unobtrusive worming to upper cover and flyleaves. Binding rubbed; extremeties bumped with chipping to spine-ends. A wide-margined copy. Provenance: 1677 ownership of the pharmacist and medical student Joseph Franz König on front pastedown; later in the library of Bonifacius Brix von Wahlberg, court physician to the Princes of Fürstenberg, in the later … [Click Below for Full Description]

MERCADANTE, Saverio 1795-1870
Milano: Gio Ricordi [PNs 1098-99, 1118, 1121, 1175-77, 1248, 1543, 1806-10, 1864-66, 1868], 1825. Probable First Edition of the complete opera (without secco recitatives). Scarce. Grove Online. Catalogo Ricordi online. OCLC no. 46545379. Elisa e Claudio, to a libretto by Luigi Romanelli after Filippo Casari's play Rosella, was first performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on October 30, 1821. "Elisa e Claudio was Mercadante's first great success, and his only comedy to maintain its place alongside the serious works of his later years. 'A Rossinian structure with Cimarosa looking out from one of the windows' said a critic of the first London performance, not without perception; but there is much in the harmonic resourcefulness, inventive part-writing and characteristic use of imitation which reveals Mercadante's hand. The recitativo secco originally written for this opera is not printed in any of the surviving editions of the score and modern revivals have used spoken dialogue with satisfactory effect. It is good to have one work by this estimable composer in which spontaneity has not been overlaid by too much thought." Michael Rose in Grove Music Online. "On the surface the opera is an innocuous reworking of Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto, and describes the peasant girl Elisa's successful struggle with Count Arnoldo to preserve her marriage with his son Claudio and ensure the welfare of their children. However, it subtly illustrates the precedence of natural rights over the privileges of nobility, and thus represents the ordinary citizen's desire for self-assertion … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alunno, Francesco
Venice: Aldus, 1543. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Vellum, backed in morocco with gilt-stamped lettering in brown and black leather spine labels; folio; 225, [1] ff; with Aldine anchor and dolphin device on title-page and last leaf. Some light scuffing along joints; upper board flaring slightly; hinge of last leaf strengthened. A remarkably bright, crisp text block. A rare dictionary of words and elegant phrases used in Boccaccio in the Decameron, and Dante -- still useful. Alunno, 15th century Italian mathematician and philosopher, is still held in high esteem for his two principal works: careful study of Petrarch, which is included in a volume of his poetry, and this work on the beauties of the Italian language. The author's study of Italian poets resulted in this alphabetical compendium of instructive and elegant phrases from the writings of Boccaccio and Dance. Renouard says the work was held in great esteem and had a great number of readers. Dedicated to cardinal Farnese, it is also the first use of the redesigned (the fifth) Aldine device, with a new border of botanical tendrils and four grotesque faces. Plimpton (15) cites only the reprint. Adams I, 842. Renouard 127.

RUTILIUS LUPUS, Publius and 15 others (François PITHOU, ed.).
Adams R448; BMC STC French, p. 256; for Pithou: NBG XL, cols. 345-346. First edition of a collection of 15 classical and mediaeval school texts on the art of rhetoric, in a rare 16th-century French prize binding from Aire-sur- la-Lys, in the French department Pas-de Calais, on the border of French Flanders and Artois. Although most of these works had been published before in some form, the present collection was based on an unpublished manuscript. It therefore provided an independent source for these works as well as bringing them together in one convenient volume for students. The manuscripts edited here came from the library of the celebrated French lawyer, humanist and scholar François Pithou (1543-1621), a pupil of Cujas and later attorney-general at Troyes. He is believed to have edited the texts himself for the present publication. With 2 owners' names and 2 bookplates. In very good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving generous margins, with marginal water stains in a few leaves, reaching the text in 1 quire. Binding rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down, slightly rubbed and with superficial cracks, traces of 2 pair of leather ties. A 1599 collection of works on rhetoric, taken from a previously unpublished manuscript.

SUETONIUS TRANQUILLUS, Caius; (Edited by Erasmus)
Paris Simon de Colines, 1543. Handsome Erasmus edition. 8vo. 160 x 100mm. Early calf boards recently rebacked in tan calf, gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. Engraved title page vignette and numerous decorative woodcut initials. Private secretary to Hadrian, Suetonius's account of the life of twelve Caesars is racy and gossip filled, but has become a primary source for scholars of the Roman period. Caesars are Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Calligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, Domitian. Suetonius's "Lives of the Caesars" was held in such high esteem, that, shortly after 1500AD, as printing became more commonplace, no fewer than eighteen editions had been published. Erasmus, a noted scholar, particularly of classic Latin texts, published his edition of Suetonius with the purpose, he stated in his original preface, of encouraging rulers "to order their lives and habits as if in a mirror" (1518). Simon de Colines, credited with creating the italic font, first published Erasmas's Suetonius in 1527 with his rabbit pressmark - this edition has his later satyr pressmark. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1543. Lettera autografo di (Pier) Luigi Farnese - Ronciglione 8/7/1543. In-4°, 4 pp. 12 righe, datata e firmata. Pacco 2

Curtius Rufus, Quintus.
Apuvd Simonem Colinaeum, 1543. Edited by Erasmus and first published by Colines in 1533, this second Colines edition of the Historia Alexandri Magni appeared just three years before Simon's death. Curtius being one of those ancient authors whose work survives only in fragments, the text opens as is to be expected with "Liber III" and, as is to be expected, the edition is a handsome one: It bears Colines' printer's device on the title-page (Marque de temps, no. 3), is printed in roman, and has criblé initials. The "Clarissimo principi Hernesto Bavariae Duci Erasmus Roter. S.P.D." is found on preliminary leaves [2-3]. Binding: Full crushed brown morocco by Lortic (signed on front lower turn-in). Boards and spine plain, five raised bands, all edges gilt. Single gilt rule on board edges; gilt inner dentelles and marbled endpapers. Green silk place marker. Provenance: Bookplate of R. Percy Alden (late 19th- and early 20th-century collector). Later manuscript ownership note of Antatole Delornow. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only seven copies in U.S. libraries.
