Dioscorides Pedanius, of Anazarbos.
Lugduni: Sub scuto Coloniensi [colophon: excudebant Ioannes & Franciscum Frellonii, fratres] 16mo (13.2 cm, 5.25"). [32], 617, [49] pp.. 1543 Attractive, pocket-sized edition of this enduringly influential classical work on herbalism and pharmacology, listing the medicinal effects of hundreds of different plants known to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The text, which was translated into Latin by Jean Ruel and first printed in that translation in 1516, appears here almost entirely in italic with the index and some headers in roman; some shouldernotes are in Greek. Printing and the Mind of Man notes that "it is no exaggeration to say that from its publication until well into the seventeenth century . . . all botanical studies were based on this book, and the greater part of any new botanical matter published during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was in the form of a commentary on Dioscorides. Contemporary vellum, spine with hand-inked title and publication information; vellum darkened and creased with small chips to spine, ties now lacking. Front hinge (inside) neatly reinforced; front free endpaper with shadows of erased pencilled annotations; title-page with "No. ii" inked in an early hand above the title. Pages age-toned, with a few corners chipped or dog-eared. => A nice little 16th-century example of this important text.
