FUSCH, Remaclus
1542. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Remaclus Fusch was a 16th-century natural scientist and physician known for his contributions to pharmacology through two books on medicine, which are exceedingly rare. This book, 'Nomenclaturae Plantarum, is a collection of articles on important herbs, the health benefits of water distillation, and medicinal properties of plants. One important concept of this book is that Fusch makes no mention of Aster Atticus or any Aster (a flowering plant) as medicinal use, something that was often used during this time period. Maestro I.F.
Molto rara. Engraving 1542, dated and monogrammed on plate at centre. Example in the second state of two, with the address of the editor Claudio Duchet. Beautiful proof, on laid paper, "Shield with letter M and star" watermark (Briquet 8390-91-92), trimmed at the platemark, in very good condition. Périon, Joachim ( Perionius, Joachimus )
Robert Winter, 1542. 8vo, (12), 447, (40), pp, Engraved head piece.Bound in full contemporary vellum, inked on spine. A rare copy in good condition. In the summer of 1540, a Latin translation of the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle by the French Benedictine, theologian and philologist Joachim Périon appeared in Paris (Cormery in Touraine 1499 - Abbey Cormery 1559), also intended as a model for translations of Greek philosophy into Latin, which is why Périon has given the work a lengthy essay on the best way of translating and translating Cicero and other Romans. The work is divided into four parts: the translation of the ten books of ethics, the comment Périon's with, preceded by a brief second dedication, the treatise on translation, the fragments of the Timaeus translation Cicero and, also "eregione", i. printed synoptically with the Greek text of the Sphaira, the fragments of the Aratübersetzungen Cicero, Vergils and Germanicus, again with a short comment Périon's. The work is immediately reprinted in Basel in 1542 by Robert Winter, whereby the title of the second part has been slightly misleadingly modified. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MARTÍNEZ, Pedro Luis.
, . . Cordier, Japonica, col. 108; Nuovo & Coppens, I Giolito e la stampa 186; Palau 154573; USTC 841214 (8 copies). Probably the second edition (following the edition published at Rome in the same year), in the original Italian, of an important eye-witness account of a voyage and spectacular shipwreck, written by the Jesuit Pedro Luis Martínez (1542-1598). On 10 April 1585 he set off from Lisbon for the East Indies in the ship Saint Jacques. It struck a rock in August 1585 near Cape of Good Hope, leading to a dramatic shipwreck. Martínez survived to write his account, most notably describing the shipwreck in detail, but also sites he visited and people he saw along the coasts of Africa, Arabia and India. When he reached Goa, he sent his account in the form of a letter dated 9 December 1586 to the Reverend Preposito General della Compagnia di Giesù, that is, the head of the Jesuit order in Rome, called the Superior General in English. Martínez was to become the first Bishop of Japan in 1596. With the corner of one leaf damaged and restored (at an early date), slightly affecting the last letters of a few lines on one page, and with some small smudges on the last text page. Otherwise in very good condition.

FUCHS, Leonhard.
FIRST EDITION of Fuchs's celebrated herbal. This work effected a revolution in the natural sciences comparable to that of Copernicus in astronomy and Vesalius in anatomy, both of which were published the following year, 1543. It was part of the pioneering effort of Fuchs, Brunfels and Bock that earned them the title of the "German fathers of botany". All three partook of a reforming zeal, partially religious in origin, to correct botanical knowledge, which had mostly been in the hands of itinerant and illiterate herbalists. To effect this reform accurate illustration and identification was the first requirement and it was to this task that Fuchs addressed himself. Fuchs employed the best artists then available in Basel: Albrecht Meyer did the drawings, Heinrich Füllmaurer transferred them to the woodblocks, and they were cut by Veit Rudolph Speckle. All three are depicted in the book, the first time that book illustrators are themselves portrayed and named. These illustrations set a new standard for botanical depiction and were some of the most influential in botanical history, being copied for innumerable works well into the 18th century. Some forty species are illustrated for the first time, including several American plants such as maize and the pumpkin. The herbals of Brunfels and Fuchs "have rightly been ascribed importance in the history of botany, and for two reasons. In the first place they established the requisites of botanical illustration -- verisimilitude in form and habit, and accuracy of significant detail... Secondly they provided a corpus of plant species wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

DENIS, the Carthusian
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The works of Denis the Carthusian were important contributions to Roman Catholic doctrine, most notably his commentary on the books of the Bible. He published some 900 sermons and began commenting on scripture in 1434, which became immensely popular after Pope Eugene IV promoted his works. In fact, he was so highly regarded, that he was considered an oracle and prophet by bishops and common-men alike. This 1542 printing of his commentary on the Gospel of Luke was published by Jacob Gazeau in Paris. [Attributes: First Edition]

Lavoro estremamente raro. Lyons: Guillaume Boullé, 1542. Very old leather religious bible or book in Latin Or Bulgarian I believe...at least I've been told. Very nice religious icon pinned to center of book. This is illustrated, may be incomplete. Sold as is. Please see pictures for condition as they are part of description. Unsure if this is a bible or other religious book. Unsure of dates as I don't read Latin. I've seen the number 1851 Ive seen 1546. Unsure of exact age but it's definitely older than 19th century. Pictures speak for themselves.
