AGRICOLA, George.
Basel, Froben, 1538.4to. Modern boards. With 2 woodcut printer’s devices. 18 lvs. First Latin translation of "Oration, Anred und Vermanung Herrn Ferdinandum zu Ungern" (Nuremberg, Peypus, 1531), an pamphlet on the Turkish wars in Hungary which began with the siege of Vienna in 1529. "Agricola gives a long-winded account of the Turks' cruelties and warns that Germany is now threatened by the Turkish forces. Hungary must be given every assistance." No writer has so praised the superiority of the Imperial armaments over the apparently weak Turkish weaponry. He stressed the superior arms of the German mercenaries, while the Turks had but flimsy pikes. Victory over a so poorly equipped enemy is nothing less than certain. His oration was written a few months after the siege of Vienna, which may explain his excessive optimism" (Kertbeny, p. 89 etc.). With preface by Georg Fabricius dedicated to Chemnitz and at the end a letter of Laurentius Bermannus to king Ferdinand, ex valle Joachimi April, 1530. A catholic with a broad humanistic education, George Agricola spent most of his life in Saxony as an educator, physician, scientist, and expert on mining and metallurgy. His outlook was more secular than that of the other pamphleteers. He viewed the Turkish question primarily as a militair and economic problem rather than as a divine visitation. In one respect his views resembled those of the other Catholic writers: he envisaged the eventual extirpation of the Islamic religion at the point of the sword. With full-page woodcut of the Duke Friedrich in full armour on horseback (by Michael Ostendorfer?) and 6 large woodcut initials. (71) lvs. (old manuscript numbering on upper outer corner ). First edition; with the bookplate of Sefik E. Atabey. - Melchior Soiter was a lawyer born in Windau (Curland), who covered several dignities in the organization of the Holy Roman Empire and participated personally to the campaign he describes in this book. The first section gives an account of the Turkish invasion into Hungary in 1529-30, and the unsuccessful siege of Vienna. The second section, written by the jurist Johannes Schnotenbeck, is an accurate explanation of the Ottoman military functionaries with several details on the tasks of every officer and a final economical statistics of the Turkish Empire, considering both its European and Asiatic territories. Hegendorff, Christoph.
Ex officina Christiani Wecheli, 1538. Rare Parisian edition of this popular letter writing guide first published in 1526 and presented in numerous editions in the 16th century. Hegendorff, a Protestant scholar and "travelling salesman of humanism and reform," was inspired by Erasmus' De conscribendis epistolis to produce it, incorporating examples from classical authors as well as his own correspondence, following his earlier work Ratio epistolarum conscribendarum compendiaria. Though the text is mostly of a secular nature, Hegendorff does show his Protestant leanings by choosing to omit a list of positive Catholic clergy epithets found in the earlier guides that he used as his template (Letter-writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present, p. 155). This edition appears to be previously unrecorded, with searches of WorldCat, COPAC, and the NUC Pre-1956 revealing no copies held by any institution. The text is printed in single columns using mostly italic and some roman with a handful of passages in Greek; it is enhanced by one decorative woodcut initial and curly brackets spanning several lines, with Wechel's printer's device appearing on the title-page and final page. A select few pages are paginated. Evidence of Readership: An early reader has added one word to the text and filled the page bearing the printer's device with two poems and penmanship practice, which makes sense given the content. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

[First printed Statutes of a Hispanic University]
First edition, the first printed statutes of any Hispanic University, to-date the oldest standing Spanish University. A fascinating insight to the first rules ever printed about the governing of a Spanish University, which at the same time is the oldest-standing University of Spain -and the Hispanic World; the contents are varied in nature, they include both the administration of the institute and instructions to the members of the academia, with specifics notes on the faculty (some peculiarities being the teacher could not make use of any aids, the students couldn't turn their backs on the teacher, and on the case when they had butlers, they were still required to carry their own books, without help). The University of Salamanca was founded in 1134 after being given the Royal Charter by King Alfonso IX in 1218, besides being the oldest such institution in Spain, it is also the third oldest in the World in continuous operations. The reputation of the University grew rapidly, and became a symbol of excellency and academia across Europe, throughout the centuries, people as Miguel de Cervantes, Hernan Cortes, Antonio de Nebrija, Miguel de Unamuno, Adolfo Suarez, Simon de Rojas, and Francisco de Vitoria, amongst many others, studied there. An extremely rare book, we find copies at: Universidad de Salamanca calling for 30 ff. and 2 blanks (making it incomplete against this copy), Biblioteca Nacional de Espana and BNF, both collating 32 ff. of which E5v and E6 are blank. Andrea Divo di Capodistria, Koper, Slovenia - Homer
Lyon, Vincentius de Portonariis, 1538. 8°, circa 15,8 x 10,8 cm., 32 ff., 277 (recte 275) num. ff., with large woodcut device on the title, leaf 26 blank, last blank missing. 19th cent. half-calf Schweiger I, 163; Hoffmann II, 478f.; not in Adams and BMC; Baudrier V, 467: "la foliation commence avec la cote 3". Rare and early Lyonese edition of this influential Latin translation of the Ilias, published for the first time the year before in Venice. The humanist Andreas Divus came from Capodistria (today Koper in Istria / Slovenia) as his friend Pier Paolo Vergerio to whom his introduction here is dedicated. In this preface he describes a dream that urged him to translate important Greek authors and promises to supply more texts by Aristophanes, Hesiodus and Theocritus. He also adds a poem (two pages) to the scholars of ancient Greek. "His Latin translations of Homer published in 1537 (Venice) were extremely literal and ad verbum (i.e. word for word). While this was the first published version of the Iliad and Odyssey in Latin, the originality of the translation of Divus has been questioned: there are very close parallels with a much earlier translation by Leontius Pilatus... They were used by George Chapman in his translations of the Iliad and Odyssey... It has been said that Chapman's knowledge of Greek was not strong enough to resist entirely the Latin of Divus, with infelicitous results... Divus was also used more directly by Ezra Pound in his long poem The Cantos, in particular for the opening Canto I" (Wikipedia). - As always the first text leaf is numbered 3 (see Baudr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Caviceo, Jacopo.
Pietro di Nicolini da Sabbio, 1538. "Nuovamente ristampato, e con somma diligenza corretto, et alla sua pristina integrita ridotto": an uncommon early edition of Caviceo's best-selling, often translated, and widely influential romance. The author had a complicated life which included dropping out of law school shortly before he could be expelled, becoming a court historian and diplomat in Parma, being banished from that city for seducing a nun (and possibly more than one), voyaging in the Middle East and India, and embroiling himself in various political intrigues before working his way to the post of Vicar General in cities including Rimini, Ravenna, and Florence. His classically inspired novel, first published in 1508 and dedicated to Lucrezia Borgia, is a romance in which Peregrino tells the ghost of Boccaccio all about his globe-spanning quest to satisfy his passion for the fair Genevera -- with the plot incorporating the author's own travel experiences. In addition to the woodcut architectural border on the title-page (previously used in the printer's 1536 edition of Boccaccio's Laberinto), the text is decorated with one large and two small woodcut illustrations, the large cut showing our lovelorn hero tormented by two satyrs playing fantastical string and wind instruments, under the banner "Ancora spero solver me." WorldCat locates => only three U.S. institutional holdings of this edition. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

CORTI (Matteo)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Contemp. ex libris Antonius Dachselhof of Berne to Lly. Very minor damp stain and spot to t.p, woodcut circle on b5 just shaved at outer margin. A very good, clean and well-margined copy in contemporary limp vellum with 14 original blank unnumbered ll in front and 31 at end, contemp ink title to upper cover and spine, original kid ties. Second edition of Agrippa's (1486 - 1535) commentary on Raymond Lull's (1232-1316) Ars Magna or ‘Ultimate General Art', a system of logic blending in4luences from Arabic mysticism, Egyptian hermeticism, and Lull's missions to Jews and Muslims. In his preface Agrippa praises Lull's art 'as easy to learn for students young and old': in fact it is based on a confusing series of paper 'machines' Lull had developed to do his reasoning for him, comprising of circles with symbols representing key topics. When rotated together in any combination they yield only theologically ‘true' statements, such as 'Angels are Wise', and 'God is Eternal'. These so-called 'Lullian Circles' were intended as tools for debating faith with Muslims: ironically they were based from an Arabic astrological tool used to cast horoscopes known as the zairja. Agrippa breaks down each circle and its function: there are nine main subjects including God, Angels, and Man, each assigned a letter B-K. The same letters are assigned to characteristics: Goodness, Greatness, Duration, Power, Wisdom, Wil … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cochlaeus, Johannes.
Gedruckt zu Leipzig: Durch Nicolaum Wolrab, 1538. Small 4to (20.8 cm, 8.125"). [96] pp. First edition of Cochlaeus' detailed response to Luther's Schmalkald Articles, a summary of Lutheran doctrine written at the request of Luther's patron, Elector John Frederick of Saxony, for presentation at the Schmalkaldic League's meeting in 1537. The league was organized in 1531 as a union of the Lutheran territories and cities to provide a united military and political front against the Roman Catholic politicians and armies led by Emperor Charles V.    Luther was unable to attend the 1537 meeting; consequently, the League ended up being largely influenced by Melanchthon and decided not to adopt the Articles chiefly because of their stand on the doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. The Articles did, however, circulate widely and were incorporated in the 1580 Book of Concord.    Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate => only one U.S. library reporting ownership (UPenn).    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.         VD16 C4347; Index Aurel. 142.161; Claus 187, 28; Spahn 132. Removed from a sammelband. Very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

This edition of the Bible is completed in 1538; the same year the Treschsel brothers also publish the Icons , following constituting of the only woods of the Holbein Bible. Long debated by bibliographers, the anteriority of the publication of the Bible was highlighted by Jean Vial, which reinforces the thesis of his colleague Henri Baudrier: the figures appeared for the first time in the edition that we propose. Largely counterfeited, these unpublished vignettes will be reprinted in 1539 in Paris and Antwerp in 1540.The great expressiveness of the illustrations is translated with talent by the engraver Hans … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARIOSTO LUDOVICO
per Nicolo d'Aristotile detto Zoppino, 1538. Cm. 14,5, cc. (36). Splendido ritratto xil. di Ariosto al frontespizio. Graziosa legatura (primi Novecento?) in pieno marocchino rosso con dorso a 5 nervi e titoli finemente incisi in oro; tagli dorati e splendida cornice floreale (sempre dorata) all'interno dei piatti. Lievi macchiette sparse, peraltro esemplare fresco e ben conservato. Edizione assai rara. Cfr. Iccu e, per altre edizioni, Gamba, 70..
