ARIOSTO Lodovico
British Library, p. 38 - Manca all'Adams. Antica firma di apparten. ms. al frontesp.; qualche lieve alone ma certamente un buon esemplare.

An allegorical love poem that unfolds as a dream vision, the "Romance of the Rose" is the work of two authors, Guillaume de Lorris, who composed the first 4,000 or so lines around 1230, and Jean de Meun, who contributed an addtional 18,000 lines 40 years later. Our version was edited by the poet Clément Marot (1496-1544), to make the language more accessible to 16th century French readers, and his efforts contributed to a renewed popularity for the tale. A PAPAL BULL ON VELLUM IN LATIN, ISSUED BY PAUL III
Rome: , 3 October 1538. Rome, 3 October 1538. This highly desirable specimen from the papacy of Paul III survives with the original seal and cord intact, and with particularly attractive and dramatic calligraphic flourishes announcing the name of the pope at the top of the document. This Bull was written for Johannes de Valesco, archdeacon of the church of Virbiesca (i.e. Briviesca) in Northern Spain, and discusses the history of his position as well confirming its benefits and privileges. Paul III (r. 1534-49) came to power during a tumultuous period for Catholicism, convening the Council of Trent in 1545 and leading the Counter-Reformation against the spread of Protestantism, but he is also known for his patronage of the arts. It was during his reign that Michelangelo completed several masterpieces, including the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, the Crucifixion of St. Peter and the Conversion of St. Paul in the Pauline Chapel, and plans for St. Peter's Basilica. The Papal Bull takes its name from the lead seals called "bullae." Apart from the rare Solemn Privilege (like Innocent III's famous granting of England in 1214 to his involuntary vassal King John), there are three other categories of Papal Bulls: Simple Privileges (also called Solemn Letters), Mandates (which have seals attached by hemp, not silk), and Letters of Grace, which confirm privileges and rights--the present item being from the final type.. 460 x 300 mm. (18 1/8 x 11 3/4"). Single column, 28 lines in a papal chancery hand. In a custom-made cloth box. WITH THE ORIGINAL LEAD SEAL AND RED AND YELLOW … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHERUBINO CAPOFERRI da Spoleto (frate)
Venezia, Francesco Bindoni & Mapheo Pasini, [romane] 1538. [Colophon:] Stampata ne la inclita città di Vinegia per Francesco Bindoni, & Mapheo Pasini compagni, a San Moyse nelle case nove Iustiniane al segno de Lanzolo Raphaelo, 1538 del mese di settembre. In-8 (160x100 mm.), cc. 39 (3). Segnatura: A-E8. Titolo in carattere gotico; marca tipografica sul frontespizio (Arcangelo Raffaele conduce per mano Tobiolo; tra loro un cane) e altra in fine (Angelo Raffaele e Tobiolo che, accompagnato dal cane, porta un grosso pesce). Margine basso del frontespizio rimarginato professionalmente. Bella legatura retrospettiva in piena pelle con fregi a secco sui piatti e sul dorso. Manualetto ascetico indirizzato al laicato devoto, spesso unito non editorialmente ad altro testo del medesimo autore intorno alle regole della vita matrimoniale (quest'ultimo oggi più noto per la curiose definizioni che l'autore diede, in re uxoria, dei «disonesti toccamenti »). Una ristampa integrale di quest'opera, con il titolo di «Regole della Vita Spirituale», è stata data da F. Zambrini (Imola, 1878), dopo edizioni parziali fatte per nozze tra il 1852 e il 1861. L'autore, Cherubino Capoferri da Spoleto, erroneamente individuato ancora oggi in molte bibliografie come il beato Cherubino da Siena, fu il fondatore del Monte di Pietà di Prato. Bibliografia: Rusconi R., Cherubino da Spoleto, in DBI, XXIV, (Roma, 1980), pp. 446-453. L. Canonici L., Fra Cherubino da Spoleto predicatore del sec. XV, in "Studi Francescani", 92. "Cyri Paediae (Cyropaedia)" by Xenophontis [Xenophon]. The "Cyropaedia" (or Cyropedia) is a biography of Cyrus the Great, originally written in the early 4th century BC by the gentleman-soldier, and student of Socrates, Xenophon of Athens. The Latinized title "Cyropaedia" derives from the Greek "Kúrou paideía" (Κύρου παιδεία), meaning "The Education of Cyrus". Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as mirrors for princes. In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, Machiavelli's The Prince, which was an important influence in the rejection of medieval political thinking, and the development of modern politics.~ wikipedia Published in its original Greek text in 1538, this copy is quite rare. It contains two volumes (bound as one) and is comprised of "quatuor priores" (the first four parts) printed in 1538, and "quatuor posteriores" (the last four parts) printed in 1539. Bound in calf with embossed decoration on the covers. Restoration work to the spine and joints. Wear and soiling to the covers and edges. Moisture stains to the entirety of the gutters which spreads into the textblock and boards. The front endpaper is missing. Ink signatures and notations on the front paste-down, title page, leaf in between volumes, and rear endpaper. A rare copy of this important and influential work. "Cyri Paediae (Cyropaedia)" by Xenophontis [Xenophon]. The "Cyropaedia" (or Cyropedia) is a biography of Cyrus the Great, originally written in the early 4th century BC by the gentleman-soldier, and student of Socrates, Xenophon of Athens. The Latinized title "Cyropaedia" derives from the Greek "Kúrou paideía" (Κύρου παιδεία), meaning "The Education of Cyrus". Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as mirrors for princes. In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, Machiavelli's The Prince, which was an important influence in the rejection of medieval political thinking, and the development of modern politics.~ wikipedia Published in its original Greek text in 1538, this copy is quite rare. It contains two volumes (bound as one) and is comprised of "quatuor priores" (the first four parts) printed in 1538, and "quatuor posteriores" (the last four parts) printed in 1539. Bound in calf with embossed decoration on the covers. Restoration work to the spine and joints. Wear and soiling to the covers and edges. Moisture stains to the entirety of the gutters which spreads into the textblock and boards. The front endpaper is missing. DORÉ (Pierre);
Paris Pierre Vidoue 1538 In-8 gothique (145 x 90 mm) de (111) ff. (sign. [Click Below for Full Description]

GROPPER
1538. Title within an elaborate armorial woodcut border with some letters coloured, large woodcut of the Crucifixion on K2verso (partly coloured), small armorial woodcut on K4recto, woodcut initials, rubricated from f. I-LXXI. Folio (322 x 200mm.) ff. [10], I -XLVII, [2], XLVIII- CCCXIII, [7]pp. 17th-century French smooth calf, gilt panels on covers with armorial corner-pieces, spine with raised bands, compartments gilt with arms/monogram. From the library of Jean Boyer, archdeacon of Conques 1508-41. This is one of some 40 plus books known to have belonged to him, printed between 1501 and 1545, some of them (not many) surviving in contemporary bindings executed at Rodez, the books dispersed in a number of French libraries. No example from his library is known outside France. The books have his powerful ex-libris written on the title-page, and the idiosyncratic and late rubrication (at least in part) plus the colouring of letters etc. in headings. The volume is not annotated (although there are notes on the verso of title-page and on f.xxvi), but its appearance and decoration is clearly to be identified solely with one man, and one man alone. The author Johann Gropper (1503-59) of Soest in Westphalia studied at Cologne University from 1516 . In 1525 he was appointed an official of the provost of Cologne cathedral, and later, having taken orders, he was given various ecclesiastical preferments. Present at the diets of 1529 and 1530, it was the latter that prompted him to concentrate on theological studies, and this work which contains the decisions of a reforming synod of th … [Click Below for Full Description]
