Roman Law.) RUTILIO (Bernardino)
Antonio Blado April, 1536. FIRST EDITION, the lettering of the title, initials of the dedication and at the start of the text sometime coloured in, and one further chapter so treated (that on Cocceius Nerva), closed tear at foot of first leaf passing through 2 letters on the verso, small hole at top of third leaf with the loss of a couple of letters, pp. [xvi], ccclxvii, small 8vo, loose in contemporary limp vellum, spine darkened and torn at top, three early and successive ownership inscriptions on title, a few marginal annotations, preserved in a cloth folding box, good. The very scarce first edition of this biographical dictionary of the Consuls and lawmakers of Rome, down to Tribonianus, a work which was several times reprinted and added to. 'Rutilio (1504-1538) was one of the first humanists to compile biographies of earleir jurists, initiating a genre of legal history that extended through the eighteenth century. He was the only historian of his period to describe the process of composition of the edictum perpetuum, while others were concerned only with reconstructing it 'without any attempt at source criticism' (Tuori, Ancient Roman Lawyers, p. 145), and his account of Labeo and Capito 'is not unlike the ones presented in modern historiography' (ibid, p. 114). The vellum used for the binding of this copy is an almost complete papal document of Julius II, 'Il Papa Terribile', issuer of the dispensation allowing Henry VIII to marry Katharine of Aragon and patron of Raphael and Michelangelo. Catalunya, Figueres
[Click Below for Full Description]

RODRÍGUEZ DE ALMELA, Diego
Sevilla, por Juan de Cromberger, 1536. Fol.

ROESSLIN, Eucharius.
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of the first printed textbook for midwives, and one of the first printed books devoted to obstetrics, preceded only by the 13-page Büchlein of Ortolff von Bayrlant, and by the Secreta mulierum of Albertus Magnus. See G&M 6138 (first edition, in German, of 1513). Roesslin's book had an enormous influence, running to over a hundred editions and translations. The striking woodcuts of the early editions not only mark it out as an outstanding medical book of the period, but revive in the printed book a tradition of obstetrical illustration begun in the manuscripts of antiquity. "Roesslin established the necessity for thorough instruction of midwives. In his versified preface he censured the wretched condition of obstetrics, and the ignorance, carelessness and superstition of the midwives, who brought about unnecessary deaths of numberless newborn. The infant mortality Roesslin bluntly labelled murder... In his book...he attempted to eliminate, or at least mitigate, these evils... From the practical obstetrical standpoint, the significance of the Rosengarten lies also in the fact that Roesslin again brought to the fore the knowledge of podalic version which had been almost forgotten since the time of Soranus and Mustio. He thus limited cephalic version, which has more theoretical merit but is less practical in execution" (Hellman). This first French edition is of particular rarity. It was not in the collection of Dr. Alfred Hellman, who possessed all three 1513 editions and the rare first English edition of 1540; his earliest French edition was 1539. … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVONAROLA, Girolamo
Bernardino Stagnino, Venise, 1536. This book is from the library of J. Alden Weir and was catalogued "The Herculean Labours of Erasmus" with a publication date of 1536 and attributed to Dasipodius. There is no title page per se. The preface (colophon) indicates that this is biography of Erasmus and the titles of the chapters range from childhood through his letters. On a page headed Author, the three prominent names are Hieronymo Frobenius (there are other works on Erasmus attributed to Frobenius), Nicolao Episcopio and Boniface Amberbach. These people were in Basel at about this time (as was Dasipodius). The latest date found is 1536, but this is also the date of the death of Erasmus. The spine has a date of 1550 inked on it. This book is clean, tight, square and essentially unmarked (a few notes). It is rubbed. It has 775 amazingly clear, lightly toned pages written in Latin and Greek bound in boards covered in pigskin. The spine has three raised bands with an inked titles (Erasmus) and date (1550). There's a small split at the base of the spine, some notes (dated 1720) on the front paste down, and the remains of brass clasps on the fore edge. There is an index and a catalog of Erasmus' Colloquies including: The art of magic - The frustration of the art of remembering. Gains from the road to the attainment of learning and teaching; Friendship - natural attractions and repulsions among the animals; Poetic Entertainment; Fabulous Entertainment various histories and myths; Profane ENtertainment - food & fasting, superstition & cruelty; Charon - detests war among Christians; and more. Parisiis: Ex officina Rob. Charles Estienne compiled the series using Baïf's earlier scholarly works while tutoring Jean Antione, the humanist's son. The texts are neatly printed in single columns using roman type with the occasional phrase in italic or Greek; printer's device Schreiber no. 4 appears on both title-pages. Almost certainly first printed by Robert Estienne in 1535 (another edition of De Re vestiaria was also printed by Girault that year), both works proved popular and went through several editions in the 16th century.    Provenance: Ink signature of Hannah Hall on front free endpaper above an inked ownership inscription reading "Duke of Marlborough's White Knights Library 1819"; Duke George Spencer-Churchill (1766–1840) was a noted book collector. Dionysius Areopagita (Dionysii):
Köln, Peter Quentel, 1536. Fachgerechte Buchbinderarbeit - Neuer zeitgenössischer Halbleder-Bucheinband mit 4 Bünden, Buchholzdeckeln und zwei Original-Schließen des XVI. Jahrhunderts. Titelblatt mit Holzschnitten von anton Woensam (Anton von Worms) mit dem Monogramm "AW" im Stock, (12) Bl., CCCCXIX Bl., 1 Bl. (420), 53 Bl., (1) Bl.. [Click Below for Full Description]

ESTIENNE, Charles]
Lyon, S?bastien Gryphe. [Click Below for Full Description]
