KENTMANN Johann
Tiguri [Zurich]: KENTMANN Johann, 1518. First and only edition of this rare treatise. Printer's device to title and 11 illustrations to text of various stones found in the human body. Small historiated capitals.19th century paper binding, shagreen title piece, faint yellow dampstain from leaf 15 to end. This was the first treatise to describe stones or gallstones, each of the 12 chapters exploring a part of the human body where such stones are found (intestines, kidneys, vesicle, and so on). Additionally, the work discusses various non-digestible objects ingested by people. Kentmann (1518-1574) was both a mineralogist and doctor, and thus particularly well placed to write on this subject. [Attributes: First Edition]

Crinito (Pietro)
Nicolas De la Barre, 1518. title-page within woodcut border, printer's device at centre, frequent woodcut capitals, small blank corner of title-page repaired, some light staining in places, early manuscript notes to title and margins of perhaps 50 leaves, possibly all in the same hand as the ownership inscription dated 1599, another inscription (dated 1642?) cropped at head of title-page, ff. [viii], CCXXII, 4to, late seventeenth-century mottled calf, spine with five raised bands, red and green morocco lettering pieces, other compartments gilt-bordered with central gilt flower tools, rubbed, a little splitting to ends of front joint, marbled endpapers, all edges red, good. One of several early reprints of Badius's 1508 edition of the works of Pietro Crinito (or Crinitus, 1475-1507), a pupil of Poliziano, including his most famous work, a commonplace collection entitled 'De honesta disciplina' (first published 1504). Written in the tradition of - and in ways directly imitating - the Attic Nights of Aulus Gellius (and therefore the Miscellanea of Poliziano as well), it contains an unclassifiable mix of stories, information, and conversation. One section of the book (VII.4), on necromancy, was plagiarised by Nostradamus. The second major work is De poetis Latinis, which 'constitutes.the first genuinely "modern" textbook of the history of ancient Latin poetry, inspired by the De grammaticus et rhetoribus Latinis of Suetonius' (Galand-Hallyn in Latinitatis perennis I, p. 192). Lucas Van LEYDEN
Engraving, dated 1518 at bottom right and signed with monogram L on rock in lower left. Example of the first state before part of outlines reworked. Lucas' version of the temptation of Christ in the wilderness makes a striking comparison with that of the Master LCz (see No.14). The German print from the Schongauer circle is more typical of the representations of this subject of c. 1500-1505, in depicting Satan as a monster. Lucas' Satan takes on a human form, revealing his true identity only by his clawed feet and the snake head at the end of his hood. New Hollstein n. 69.II; Bartsch VII.361.41; J. P. "Servitude of any sort is distasteful to all men." - Ulrich von Hutten Ulrich von Hutten was a 16th-century German Protestant reformer known for his dedication to the teachings and leadership of Martin Luther. His collection of writings begins with a period of Latin poetry and letters and, as his writing and devotion grew, he published a number of dialogues and lectures on humanism and Protestant reforms. This 1518 first Basel edition of Hutten's 'Dialogues' features important, yet curious inclusions by Froben. It includes Froben's letter to Thomas More and Hutten's dedicatory letter to Heinrich Stromer. (Sebastiani, p.337). It should be noted that this edition was published in Latin, not German like many of Hutten's previous works. [Attributes: First Edition]

CORNAZANO, Antonio
Orthona: Hieronymo Soncino, 1518. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Antonio Cornazzano was a 15th-century Italian writer known for his poetry and biographical works. However, his most important works were government and political treatises including one of the art of military and war. 'De Re Militaria', first written in 1476, was a piece of prose covering Greek and Roman military conquests and politicians - Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Brutus, Spartan wars, and accounts from Ptolemy. This incredibly rare and valuable work was published by the Soncino family - a Jewish family of printers living near Milan. While other European printers such as Aldine are more remembered today, Soncino is responsible for setting the print types that Aldus employed!

Artist: Ruscelli Girolamo ( - 1566 ) Venedig; issued in: Venice; date: ca 1564. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 18,5 x 25,5; - description : Map shows total Great Britain; - vita of the artist: Girolamo Ruscelli (1518-1566) was an Italian polymath, humanist, editor, and cartographer active in Venice during the early 16th century. Ruscelli is best known for his important revision of Ptolemy's Geographia, which was published post humously in 1574. It is generally assumed that Alexius Pedemontanus was a pseudonym of Girolamo Ruscelli. In a later work, Ruscelli reported that the Secreti contained the experimental results of an ëAcademy of Secretsí that he and a group of humanists and noblemen founded in Naples in the 1540s. Ruscelliís academy is the first recorded example of an experimental scientific society. The academy was later imitated by Giambattista Della Porta, who founded an ëAccademia dei Secretií in Naples in the 1560s.

"(He) analysed the status and power of the church and its relations with civil society, with particular reference to the definition and limitations of papal authority in relation to councils, bishops and the secular authorities" (The Cambridge History of Renaissance Philosophy). Marcantonio RAIMONDI

BINDINGS - MOSAIC). (ALDINE IMPRINT). AESCHYLUS
Venetiis [Venice]: In aedibus Aldi et Andreae Soceri, February 1518. EDITIO PRINCEPS. This is the first printing of the extant tragedies of the Greek playwright Aeschylus in a splendid mosaic binding and with illustrious provenance. Surprisingly, the binding here is unsigned, but the quality of the workmanship and the materials confirm this as the work of a master artisan. Similar bindings have been produced by Trautz-Bauzonnet, Emile Mercier, and the Club Bindery. Our previous owner Robert Hoe was one of the founders of this last workshop, and a mosaic "répétition" binding created for him by the Club Bindery, and with his monogram on the doublure (as here), was shown in the Grolier Club's exhibit of mosaic bindings in 1902 and again in its exhibition in 1906 of books bound at the Club Bindery. It appears in "Bound to Be the Best" as #11. The perfection of the finishing would be typical of the work of Léon Maillard, one of the best finishers of his generation, who was lured to America by Hoe in 1897 to join the team at the Club Bindery. Scholars of the Greek Classics will note that our Aldine editio princeps contains six plays--"The Persians," "Seven against Thebes," "The Suppliants," "Agamemnon," "The Eumenides," and "Prometheus Bound"--rather than the seven known to survive from the estimated 70 to 90 dramas Aeschylus (ca. 525-455 B.C.) produced. The explanation includes one of the few failures of the Aldine editors: when Aldus' brother-in-law Francesco d'Asola was preparing the text, he did not catch an imperfection in his source manuscript: it was lacking several pages … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

"Peter Barbo (Paul II) could feign good nature, when occasion served, but he was so mean-spirited that when could not obtain what he aimed at by praying, entreating, and requesting, he would join tears to make them sooner believed. Therefore, Pope Pius sued to call him 'the godly Mary.' - Platina, Lives. Originally printed in 1479, Bartolomeo Sacchi's Lives of the Popes, was one of the first works published on the history of the popes of the Catholic Church. However, Sacchi (more commonly called Platina) used the opportunity to offer extensive discussion on the history of Rome and the pagan life that was prevalent throughout Roman history, as well as make poignant attacks on Pope Paul II. It quickly became the standard reference work on papal history. This 1518 post-incunable printing includes a number of Platina titles including Lives, Contra Amores, and Falso et vero bono as well as a text by Raffaelo Maffei, De vita quatuor Maximi Pontifici (Life of the Four Greatest Popes).
