The individual works are all first editions with the exception of Lefèvre's Epitome of Boethius' De arithmetica (first, 1496) and an unattributed Opusculum de p[r]axi numerorum quod Algorismum vovant, actually the Algorismus of Sacrobosco (no earlier printing than this one in auction records). This latter text was the first to introduce Hindu-Arabic numerals into the European university curriculum, thereby greatly simplifying the procedures of practical calculation. The geometrical part of the volume comprises several works of Bovelles (ca. 1479-1567), which deal with the classical problems of the quadrature of the circle and duplication of the cube, and contain a highly original study of stellated polygons. Bovelles also gives here the first published account of the cycloid, a curve that was to be of great significance in the seventeenth century development of mathematics leading up to the invention of calculus and for Huygens' isochronous pendulum clock. The volume concludes with Lefèvre's treatise on astronomy. This is a very rare book on the market, with no other copies located in auction records.Provenance: Fol. Fourth and last edition of a practical handbook for international merchants, giving information for the conversion of monetary units, weights and measures from various countries. It covers not only units from cities in the Italian states but also from Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Damascus, Cyprus, Corfu, Rhodes and Crete. Venice was at this time the centre of European trade with the Near and Middle East. Little is known about the author and this is his only published work. With the armorial owner's stamp of Count Ercole Silva (1756-1840) in Milan on the back of the title-page. In good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal spot or stain. The binding is somewhat tattered and if the marbled paper sides ever included bright colours, they have faded to shades of brown. A good copy.

Legatura in piena pergamena coeva (un po' iscurita e macchiata, piccola mancanza alla cuffia superiore) con titolo manoscritto al dorso e al taglio inferiore. Firma di appartenenza al frontespizio, note manoscritte su diverse pagine. Cerniere un po' allentate, fioriture e bruniture diffuse su diverse pagine, lievi aloni sparsi, antico rinforzo al margine interno delle prime carte, ma nel complesso buona copia genuina. TERZA EDIZIONE, dopo quella del 1503 pubblicata a Milano e quella del 1554 pubblicata a Venezia. L'opera, il maggior lavoro di questo noto storico e umanista, illustra la vita milanese dalle origini alla caduta di Ludovico il Moro, avvenuta nel 1499. Risulta pertanto estremamente preziosa per le fonti storiche, molte delle quali risultano perdute. Questa edizione, curata dal Porcacchi, presenta numerose modifiche e aggiunte. L'incipit donne quelques précisions : " C'est le terrier de Jehan Danlezy [d'Anlezy] premiers seigneur des Vesvres commencé le vingt et unnième jour de février l'an mil cinq cents et dix huit fait par Jeahn Robert et Gilbert Bourachot notaires royaux." S'ensuit lse noms des propriétaires des Vesvres (Jeahan et Simon Du Monceau) qu'ils ont hérités de Jehan d'Anzely, puis l'inventaire des terres dépendant de de ce fief, avec le nom des tenanciers et la description des parcelles exploitées. L'éciture typique du XVIe siècle est difficile à déchiffrée. Les Vesvres est un château situé sur la commune de Bourbon l'Archambault (Allier). Jean d'Anlezy, désigné dans ce terrier comme premier seigneur des lieux. Il avait déjà rendu aveu et dénombrement ) la duchesse de Bourbon en 1503 par son fief des Vesvres alors ainsi composé : "hostel fort, mouthe, basse court, jardins et foussez de Vaivres et garenne, buissons joignant ledit chastel, grange, vacheries en ladite basse-court et l'estang de Vaivres, le pré des Landes, cinq charretées de foin, les champs de l'Aigue, le pré aux chevaulx, les champs de la Grange et neuf boisselées et les prés du Cloudis soubz le grand estang, contenant quarante charretées de foin", estimé à 110 livres de rente annuelle. With blue and red Lombardic initials throughout, a few (ff. 31r, 49r, 69r, 71v, 74v) with penwork decoration. Contemp. wooden boards (wants spine; lower cover cracked). A pretty, pocket-size prayer book, not classifiable as belonging to any known collection. Based on the unsophisticated penwork and the litany, it was probably created in the (northern) Rhineland. Title (fol. 1r): "Exhortacio salutaris terrorem iudicii ac timorem incutiens divinem ul[tionis]; incipit "Expergiscere o miserabilis homo" (for the beginning, but not the remainder of the text, cf. Nicolaus de Saliceto, Antidotarius animae). Contains numerous indulgences, including (fol. 80r/v) one by Pope Alexander VI in honour of Saint Anne (1494; she is also the first female Saint mentioned in the litany, fol. 38v). As the indulgence granted by Pope Sixtus IV for performing the prayer "Ave sanctissima virgo" was doubled by Pope Julius II (1503-13) (cf. fol. 67r), the date can be assumed with a high degree of certainty as after 1503. The penitential psalms (fol. 31r ff.) are followed by the kyrie and litany (37v-38v: with SS. Gereon and Odila); fols. 88r-97v contain prayers to the Saints (including SS. With historiated woodcut initials. Splendid modern red morocco, both covers richly gilt, gilt fillets to raised bands. Stored in custom-made cloth clamshell box with gilt spine title. The first English edition of Ludovico di Varthema's famous travels to Arabia, Persia, and India: the highly important and adventurous narrative containing the first recorded visit of a westerner to Mecca. All early editions of Varthema's "Itinerario" are exceedingly rare (even the 2013 Hajj exhibition at the MIA, Doha, only featured the 1654 reprint; cf. below). - Varthema, a gentleman adventurer and soldier from Bologna, left Venice at the end of 1502. In 1503 he reached Alexandria and ascended the Nile to Cairo, continuing to Beirut, Tripoli, Aleppo and Damascus, where, adopting Islam and taking the name of Yunas, he joined a Mameluke escort of a Hajj caravan and began the pilgrimage to Mecca. Al verso del tit. trovasi una prefazione o avviso ("Zilius De hiis quae Iohannes Boccatius edidit") che cita le opere composte dal Boccaccio; segue la lunga "Epistola" a Pino De Rossi (consolatoria per il di lui esilio), seguono due lunghe canzoni non composte dal Boccaccio, bensì attribuite, in vari codici antichi mss., a Jacopo Sanguinacci, poeta del XV sec.; è invece di Boccaccio la ballata "Il fior che ?l valor perde" al recto del f. 14, dopo la quale inizia il testo di "Ameto". Terza edizione, rarissima, dell'Ameto (la prima è del 1478, la seconda dell'anno successivo), celebre «favola idillico - allegorica, nota anche sotto il titolo di "Commedia delle ninfe fiorentine" o "Ninfale d'Ameto". Composta, con tutta probabilità, fra il 1341 e il 1342, l'opera è in prosa. intercalata da brani lirici in terza rima, conformemente ai modelli medievali..» (Diz. Bompiani, Opere I, p. 110). Legatura cinquecentesca (coeva?) in piena pergamena floscia con unghie e tracce di leccetti di chiusura. Mancanza di pergamena al dorso, pagina di titolo un po' brunita e poche gore marginali, peraltro esemplare assai genuino, marginoso ed in ottimo stato di conservazione. Antica firma di possesso ms. al frontespizio. Bell'edizione di questo classico della storiografia antica italiana e da considerarsi fra gli scritti principali dello storico e filologo romagnolo (Forlì 1392 - Roma 1463). Cfr. Iccu.

Fourth and last edition of a practical handbook for international merchants, giving information for the conversion of monetary units, weights and measures from various countries. It covers not only units from cities in the Italian states but also from Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Damascus, Cyprus, Corfu, Rhodes and Crete. Venice was at this time the centre of European trade with the Near and Middle East. Little is known about the author and this is his only published work. With the armorial owner's stamp of Count Ercole Silva (1756-1840) in Milan on the back of the title-page. In good condition, with only an occasional minor marginal spot or stain. The binding is somewhat tattered and if the marbled paper sides ever included bright colours, they have faded to shades of brown. A good copy.

Rhineland, early 16th c. (after 1503). - 12mo (65 x 90 mm). 109 ff. (numbered i, 108 in pencil by a later hand); thus complete. Latin bastarda on vellum. With blue and red Lombardic initials throughout, a few (ff. 31r, 49r, 69r, 71v, 74v) with penwork decoration. Contemp. wooden boards (wants spine; lower cover cracked). A pretty, pocket-size prayer book, not classifiable as belonging to any known collection. Based on the unsophisticated penwork and the litany, it was probably created in the (northern) Rhineland. Title (fol. 1r): "Exhortacio salutaris terrorem iudicii ac timorem incutiens divinem ul[tionis]; incipit "Expergiscere o miserabilis homo" (for the beginning, but not the remainder of the text, cf. Nicolaus de Saliceto, Antidotarius animae). Contains numerous indulgences, including (fol. 80r/v) one by Pope Alexander VI in honour of Saint Anne (1494; she is also the first female Saint mentioned in the litany, fol. 38v). As the indulgence granted by Pope Sixtus IV for performing the prayer "Ave sanctissima virgo" was doubled by Pope Julius II (1503-13) (cf. fol. 67r), the date can be assumed with a high degree of certainty as after 1503. "Small folio in 6s, ^2, a-q^6, r^4(-r4); 101 leaves; 68 woodblocks, 20 hand-colored, though only 1 with more than light detail; initials with maiblumen infils; a heavily repaired copy, particularly in the first half of the book, with loss to page edges which have been restored. A large portion of the title page is lost, but with all the text of the title preserved; repairs affecting text on 2, c2 verso, o2, and o6, while m2 is almost half perished; contemporary marginalia and underlining throughout, the marginalia being mostly citations; in a recent utilitarian binding of quarter brown faux leather over marbled boards.
