SCHEDEL, D. Hartmann.
Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1493, Latin text edition. Coloured woodcut, printed area 370 x 520mm. Small stitch holes at centre fold, as usual, with old reinforcing. A fine example of the famous incunable world map from the 'Nuremberg Chronicle', published a matter of months after Columbus' return to Spain after his first voyage to the New World, so including nothing of his discoveries. Instead, appropriately for a history of the world, it takes a retrospective view, with the cartography that of Ptolemy, with a land-locked Indian Ocean with the island of Taprobana, but given a biblical theme by depicting the three sons of Noah in the borders. Down the left are seven vignettes of mythological creatures, with a further 14 on the reverse, taken from the works of Herodotus, Solinus and Pliny. These include figures with six arms, four eyes or a bird-neck and a centaur. The text describes which parts of the world they inhabit. SHIRLEY: 19.

Facsimile. New Reproduction. Author: Hartmann Schedel Language: Latin Date: 1493 AD Pages: 763 History/Description: "The Nuremberg Chronicle" is an illustrated biblical paraphrase, and world history, that follows the story of human history as it relates to the Bible. It includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. It's written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a German translation by Georg Alt. Both the Latin and German versions were printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, Germany. It's one of the first books to integrate illustrations and text. It is estimated that 1400-1500 Latin version were printed and 700-1000 German versions were printed. The larger illustrations were also sold separately as prints, often hand colored with watercolors. To Latin Scholars, the book is known as Liber Chronicarum (Book of Chronicles). To English speakers, it's referred to as the Nuremberg Chronicle, after the city it was published in. To German speakers it's called Die Schedelsche Weltchronik (Schedel's World History) in honor of the author. Hartmann Schedel was a medical doctor, humanist, and book collector. According to an inventory done in 1498, Schedel's personal library contained 370 manuscripts and 670 printed books. He used passages from the classical and medieval works in this collection to compose the text of the Nuremberg Chronicle. He borrowed most frequently from another humanist chronicle, called Supplementum Chronicarum, by Jacob Phillip Foresti of Bergamo. It's been estimated that about 90% of the Nuremberg's text is pieced together from works on humaniti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Title: "De regno polonie et eius initio." This is an original uncolored woodcut depicting the Kingdom of Poland from the Latin issue of Liber Chronicarum (or Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartman Schedel (1440-1514). Maybe the earliest printed map of Poland. "De regno polonie et eius initio" made with great fantasy. Showing townviews, waterways, buildings, ships etc. This chronicle was the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century and a milestone in printing history. It contained hundreds of illustrations, ranging from portraits and Biblical scenes to human monstrosities. But it is for the town views, often the earliest views of the cities depicted, that the Chronicle is best known today. Just a couple of small marginal stains; some red underlining; margins and edges very nice. Overall, very good. Size: (HxW) (including margins): 15.5 x 10.8 inches / 40 x 27 cm Aritists: Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff Source: SCHEDEL, Hartmann. Liber Chronicarum. [Venice, Bernardinus Benalius (?), before June 1493]. 4° (204x145 mm). Collation: [18, 2-84]. [36] leaves. Text in one column, 32-33 lines. Type: 130G, 85G. Full-page woodcut on fol. a2v. Woodcut decorated initial on fol. a3r, Lombards throughout. Original pictorial paper wrappers, now cased in transparent plastic material, black morocco spine, with title and 'Benali's wrappers' in gilt lettering. In a black morocco box. A good copy, slightly waterstained and spotted. This vernacular edition, printed in Venice and bound in attractive and scarce pictorial paper wrappers, is generally attributed to the printer Bernardinus Benalius. The publication has also been ascribed to Paulus Fridenperger. Examples of early paper bindings with woodcuts are very rare, and of the greatest value and import for the history of engraving. These wrappers "were meant to function not as permanent binding, but rather as eye-catching advertisements for the books they covered, precisely as book jackets do today" (P. The woodcuts designed for the upper and lower cover, which probably belonged to Benalius himself, were used as cheap coverings for different books, independent from their content. In the present edition, the woodcut on the upper cover depicts St. John the Baptist and St. Peter in a desert landscape supporting circles formed of intertwined foliage symbolizing the Trinity; on the lower cover, the woodcut shows St. John the Evangelist with his eagle and St. Francis standing before a church and supporting the foliage circles, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hartmann SCHEDEL (Norimberga 1440 - ivi 1514)
Xilografia, finemente colorata a mano, in buone condizioni." Michael WOLGEMUTH (Norimberga 1434 - 1519)
Xilografia, 1493 circa. "Woodcut, 1493, without the signature of the art … [Click Below for Full Description]

Germany: Good condition for being over 500 years old. Buyers must read entire listing and ask questions before buying. I have for your consideration a nice framed single sheet example from the 1493 book Nuremberg Chronicle. This page shows the woodblock print of the city of Constantinople with some text written in German, not Latin like another edition printed. If you look closely at the print, you can see text from the other side of the page bleeding through. I am not a book dealer or art appraiser, so please judge this example for yourself using the photos. Returns - Though I am not doing 30 day returns the buyer may examine this item for 5 days and return it if not happy. Buyer pays return shipping and the item must be sent back exactly how it is. MARTIALIS, Marcus Valerius
"I live in a little cell, with a window that won't even close, In which Boreas himself would not want to live." - Martial, Epigrams Martial was a 1st-century Roman poet from Spain most-known for his 'Epigrams.' This important, early piece of Roman literature expresses details of life in Rome focusing in on the brutal daily life during the Roman Empire. Martial describes living conditions of Rome, corrupt physicians and senators, cruel treatment of slaves, and secrets and rumors of emperors. Because of the style of Martial's writing, he is often considered the first insult comic, as he used humor to disguise his disdain for the life with which he was so familiar. This 1493 incunabula printing of Martial's works is not only a first edition, but it is one of the earliest printed editions of this work. It is complete with all 159 numbered leaves, each of which includes the text surrounded by the commentary of Georgius Merula. Merula was a well-known Italian classical scholar who published commentaries on Cicero, Plautus, Cato and Martial, which first appeared in 1471. [Attributes: First Edition]

AL-FARGH N , A mad ibn Mu ammad ibn Kath r [ALFRAGANUS].
Ferrara: Andreas Belfortis, Gallus, 3 September, 1493. First edition, extremely rare, of this foundation work of early modern astronomy, the Kit b f Jaw mi Ilm al-Nuj m, now usually known in the West as the Elements of Astronomy. This is an exceptional copy, in an untouched contemporary binding, with numerous annotations and calculations in a contemporary hand. "This book marks the beginning of the period during which Arab astronomers introduced new elements into the science of astronomy, and exhibited an attitude of healthy scepticism and caution toward the contents of Ptolemy's works" (Sezgin, p. v). "The influence of the Elements on medieval Europe is clearly attested by the existence of numerous Latin manuscripts in European libraries. References to it in medieval writers are many, and there is no doubt that it was greatly responsible for spreading knowledge of Ptolemaic astronomy, at least until this role was taken over by Sacrobosco's Sphere. But even then, the Elements of al-Fargh n continued to be used, and Sacrobosco's Sphere was clearly indebted to it" (DSB). The great French historian of science Pierre Duhem summarized the influence of al-Fargh n 's treatise as follows (quoted from Sezgin, p. vi). "Everything which Robert Grosseteste, a leading figure in the thirteenth-century Aristotelian school of Paris, attributed to Ptolemy in his Summa Philosophiae, was in fact taken from al-Fargh n . We note further that the Italian astronomers from the thirteenth until the beginning of the fourteenth century depended completely upon the book of al-Fargh n when they referre … [Click Below for Full Description]
