Hermann Nitzschewitz:

Schedel, Hartmann
Anton Koberger, Nürnberg, 1493. Original double page woodcut map published in the Latin text edition of the famous 'Nurnberg Chronicle', printed in Nuremberg, in July 1493. Verso illustrated with small woodcut illustrations. First Latin text edition. The 'Nurnberg Chronicle' was the earliest and most richly illustrated incunabula and description of the world, which was as well illustrated with a small number of authentic double page city views. These woodcuts were mostly cut or designed by Hanns Pleydenwurff and Michael Wolgemut. Also Albrecht Dürer did his apprenticeship in this famous Nuremberg workshop. The world map by Hartmann Schedel is one of the earliest obtainable world maps published and printed in 1493. It was just published a couple of months after the return of Christoph Columbus in March 1493 from his first voyage to the New World, however nothing of his new discoveries were included. The world map is based on Ptolemy and is surrounded by twelve windheads, further the map is supported in three of its corners with figures of the Old Testament (Ham, Shem and Japhet). A highly decorative fine printed example of this much sought after Incunabula woodcut map of the world. In very good to excellent condition. A fine example, very well preserved. 365 by 525mm (14¼ by 20¾ inches).

Schedel
Nuremberg: Koberger, 1493. See pictures. Some toning to leaf, especially at edges. Light moisture mark here and there, difficult to see but present. Light crease between Judas and Mathias. Some spotting, mostly at inner margin. Woodcut side has a thumb at fore-edge and a dark mark at bottom-edge. Printed side has a ghost of a label at upper corner, partially on the "CI" numbering, bottom margin has two ink spots, several thumbs along fore-edge. Moisture line more visible on this side, intrudes at bottom and mark continues into bottom paragraph. Some soiling, especially near inner margin at bottom. Overall, a very pleasing full-page woodcut that would frame stunningly well. A delightful full-page woodcut showing Jesus and the disciples, and the symbols of the four gospel writers inhabiting the corners of the print. The symbols of the apostles dates far back, another wonderful bookish example is folio 27v of The Book of Kells. This is Leaf CI and CII from the Latin edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, from the sixth part, which covered Jesus to the current age (1493). While there are many Nuremberg Chronicle leaves on the market, it's difficult to find a full-page cut, especially one with such a universal Christian appeal. To be honest, I'm going to price it on the high side, and if it doesn't sell, I think I'll frame it myself and put it in the book room. The subject matter and antiquity of the leaf strike a chord, for me. I've sold these before, and the question arises, how do you know if it's real? Well, there's a number of indications. On the text-side you can see the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINDAR.
1493. [16], 373, [1], [2 blank] pp.Editio princeps (Brunet: "très recherchée") of Pindarus' poetry together with the "Hymns" of Callimachus, Dionysius's "De Situ Orbis", and the poem "Alexandra" by Lycophron. The preface by Aldus to Andrea Navagero is of great interest. After giving a survey of the war that ravaged Italy and had caused Aldus to suspend his printing activities, Aldus discusses the work he has already done for literature and reflects on his future plans. We also learn from it that he is already active as a printer for twenty years, so he must have started around 1493. The edition princeps of Pindarus is one of the most beautiful and important works produced by Aldus Manuzio the Elder. The book is printed in a fine Greek type, slightly larger than Aldus usually choose for his small pocket editions, with 26 lines to a page, and with the headings printed in capitals, as are the titles inbetween. The pages are numbered on rectos only, skipping a number so counting pages, not leaves. The collation is - unusual as well - given in numbers. Small guide-letters are printed in the in initial spaces. It was also a very good text-edition. The present and the edition of 1515 with the scholia was used for almost all subsequent Pindarus-editions. Our copy is furthermore most elegantly bound in gilt red morocco. Fine copy.l Adams P1218; Ahmanson-Murphy Coll. 108; BMC STC Italian, p. 520; Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre 105; Renouard 64, 9.

SUETONIUS TRANQUILLUS, Caius; [SABELLICUS, Marcus Antonius (commentary)]
Venice: Venice: Damianum de Mediolano, 1493. Folio (306 x 210 mm). 129 leaves (of 130, lacking the mainly blank title leaf). Early twentieth century boards with manuscript title label. 62 lines of commentary surrounding the text and headline in roman type. Capital spaces left blank. Small repair to the margin of p.2 and occasional manuscript marginalia. Bookplate of Edmund McClure and previous owner's notes to front pastedown. Some wear to the binding at the spine ends. A tall and generally well preserved incunable. Suetonius' The Twelve Caesars is regarded as one of the great classical texts and remains a primary source of Roman history. It is notable for its informal style, describing at length the social aspects of Roman life, with particular emphasis on the feasting and wine preferred by the different emperors. It also refers to early Christians. It became the basis for Robert Graves's historical novel I, Claudius. The redaction and commentary of the Venetian scholar and historian Sabellicus, is described by Ebert (A General Bibliographical Dictionary) as of "some critical matter". This was the first work to be printed by Damianus de Mediolano, who produced a further ten Venetian printings to June 1495, before relocating to Perugia where he printed a further four in 1500. SCHEDEL, Hartmann (1440-1514)
Anton Koberger, Nuremberg, 1493. 16 7/8 x 12 inches. 326 leaves (including final blank), illustrated with double-page woodcut map of Europe, and numerous woodcuts of all sizes throughout by Wohlgemut, Pleydenwurff and Albrecht Dürer, viz., 1,809 woodcuts in 645 blocks, including forty-two large city views. Early eighteenth-century full red Italian morocco, ruled and tooled in gilt on boards and spine. Fine copy with provenance from the Medici Library of the first edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle, the first printed illustrated history and description of the world. The Liber Chronicarum, or Nuremberg Chronicle, is the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century. The text by Hartmann Schedel, a Nuremberg doctor and historian who was one of the first cartographers to use the printing press, sets out to chronicle the history of the world from its creation to the end of the 15th century, including topographical descriptions of all the major cities of the known world. The chief beauty of this work is the harmonious way in which the text and illustrations are blended to form pages that show a remarkable balance between the type and woodcut. CARVAJAL, BERNARDINO DE (1456-1523)
Stephan Plannck, Rome, 1493. A sermon given on the 10th of January, 1490 in Rome by the Spanish Cardinal Bernardino Lopez de Carvajal y Sande before a gathering of Cardinals, commemorating the Spanish victory over the Moors at the Siege of Baza (1489), one of the last battles of the Reconquista. Shortly after the fall of Baza, the Kingdom of Granada fell to the Spanish forces, and the Moors were forced to retreat completely from the Iberian peninsula, which they had occupied continuously in one place or another since 711 A.D. The obvious importance of this event to Christendom hardly needs to be emphasized, and the military feats of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella are celebrated in this sermon, as well as the historical importance of this final blow to Muslim forces in Europe. Queen Isabella, after hearing of the drooping morale of the Spanish troops during the prolonged siege of Baza, decided to personally visit the soldiers on November 7, 1489 - a visit which has become the stuff of songs and poetry. An interesting side note concerns how this visit changed the rules for the game of chess. Prior to Queen Isabella's visit, the piece next to the King in chess only had limited movement. In homage to Queen Isabella's brave intervention, however, the rule was changed to allow the Queen piece broad movement - a change that was excitedly welcomed by chess players, and permanently changed the rules of the game. The Siege of Baza was immortalized in Washington Irving's work 'Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada' published in 1829. The printer, Stephan Plannck, was a native of Ger … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hartmann Schedel
Facsimile. Author: Hartmann Schedel Language: Latin Date: 1493 AD Pages: 763 History/Description: "The Nuremberg Chronicle" is an illustrated biblical paraphrase, and world history, that follows the story of human history as it relates to the Bible. It includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. It's written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a German translation by Georg Alt. Both the Latin and German versions were printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, Germany. It's one of the first books to integrate illustrations and text. It is estimated that 1400-1500 Latin version were printed and 700-1000 German versions were printed. The larger illustrations were also sold separately as prints, often hand colored with watercolors. To Latin Scholars, the book is known as Liber Chronicarum (Book of Chronicles). To English speakers, it's referred to as the Nuremberg Chronicle, after the city it was published in. To German speakers it's called Die Schedelsche Weltchronik (Schedel's World History) in honor of the author. Hartmann Schedel was a medical doctor, humanist, and book collector. According to an inventory done in 1498, Schedel's personal library contained 370 manuscripts and 670 printed books. He used passages from the classical and medieval works in this collection to compose the text of the Nuremberg Chronicle. He borrowed most frequently from another humanist chronicle, called Supplementum Chronicarum, by Jacob Phillip Foresti of Bergamo. It's been estimated that about 90% of the Nuremberg's text is pieced together from works on humanities, science, philo … [Click Below for Full Description]
