MOMBRITIUS BONINUS.
MILANO, ANTONIO ZAROTTO, 1474 CIRCA. Pope PIUS II. (= Aeneas Silvius PICCOLOMINI)
(Rome, Johann Gensberg, c. 1474). 4to. (4) lvs., (fol. 1 v:) 29 lines, antiqua. [a4]. Modern flexible vellum. Probably second edition; in trade very rare. There is some disagreement in the relevant bibliographies as to the exact number of editions of this work: the "Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke" lists five editions, but only refers to three reference examples; the ISTC limits itself to these three (all undated): J. de Lignamine (ca. 1470), J. Gensberg (ca. 1474), Stephan Plannck (ca. 1485/92). Hain attributes the Gensberg-edition to J. Schurener; early bibliographic literature largely follows him. Of Johann Gensberg - according to F. Geldner - little is known of his biography. The 46 printed works known to come from him, or which have been attributed to him, are from the years 1473 / 74; the fact that his type-face is very similar to that of Johannes Schureners has caused difficulties in attributing works to him. Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405 - 1464) - as Pope under the name Pius II. - was one oft the most important Humanists of the 15th century. During the 1440s he achieved in his first career, namely that as humanistically educated poet and politician, a high point: he spent several years at the court of the Emperor, Friedrich III, and was crowned by him as "poeta laureatus". He gave lectures at the University of Vienna on classical literature, and his influence on contemporary humanist circles is highly regarded. However, by 1447 his church career had already begun - he was appointed Bishop of Triest - and which reached its climax with his appointment to Pope in 1458. … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMUS, Edmond Gustave.
Cf. Junk, Bibliographia Botanica 1474; Nissen, BBI 316 na; Willing 473. Beautiful work with 52 watercolour drawings of the orchids of France. The orchids are drawn on smaller sheets, measuring ca. 24.5×15.5 cm, that have been pasted onto larger leaves.Camus wrote the name of the variety and that of the botanist who first described this particular orchid in block letters underneath the drawing. Drawings XXIV and XXXVII have been signed by him, "E.G. Camus," the others are unsigned. Because of the small sheets on which the orchids have been drawn, 16 varieties have been depicted in a lower and an upper half.Edmond Gustave Camus (1852-1915), a pharmacist and botanist, was fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the genus of the orchid. He lived close to l'Isle-Adam, the habitat of numerous orchids, and set out to collect the different varieties. The present 52 watercolour drawings are not listed in any of the bibliographies, not even in the bibliography of the publications by E.G. Camus, prepared by Henri Lecomte and Camus's daughter Aimée Antoinette in E.G. Camus, Iconographie des Orchidées d'Europe (Paris 1921-1929). These drawings testify to Camus's outstanding craftmanship both as a botanist and artist and to his love for orchids. Their charm cannot fail to captivate anyone who browses through the atlas. The splendid drawings are in excellent condition.

Pseudo-Salomon (Ramschwag), Bischof von Konstanz (Episcopus Constantiensis):
Augsburg, St. Ulrich u. Afra, ca. 1474). Type 1.

Because of the small sheets on which the orchids have been drawn, 16 varieties have been depicted in a lower and an upper half. Edmond Gustave Camus (1852-1915), a pharmacist and botanist, was fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the genus of the orchid.
